I've liked all the WP you've sent our way, Ruckus! Thanks for the heads up.
Yay!!! I wore Sheeple out!!!(that's what I call Steeple, btw) in case you haven't noticed, I like to make up my own names...
I was looking at picking up some Phosphorescent on vinyl and discovered the same outfit has Wolf People LPs, and will have the new one, "Fain", on 4/30.

Really liking it! I checked this morning at 2am EST and it still wasn't available on Spotify but thankfully it was later tonight. They have remained true to their sound but it sounds heavier and funkier. The rhythm section seems to be driving a lot of it and while the British folk inspired vocals remain, it doesn't sound like derivative and repetitive throwback, psychedelic rock. They have created a unique sound for themselves.
Thanks for reminding me that this thread exists, Ruckus. I can't wait to listen to the album.
I have to manage the mp3 download for the time being, somewhat quietly in my classroom this morning. I'm diggin' it, no question. Just needs to be cranked on the turntable... soon!
Hope you got to crank it Johnny! The LP showed up today. Man the guitar work is sublime. They bring to mind all my favorite bands that have complex guitars playing off of each other in some way such as Scale the Summit, Baroness, Television and even White Denim doing At the Farm. Yet it's a sound all their own. I don't even need the vocals. Heavy prog folk it is...
I did! Definitely benefits from volume, and I love it even more. Funny, though, when Michele came home, entered the room, and said, "is this Jethro Tull?"
AGH! Stop talking! I forgot to order my copy and I don't have a record store within 60 miles!
(It's okay, I'm listening on Spotify, which is really not okay though)
I sent it to a friend via spotify. She thinks Tull too.

I get that in a general sense but the guitar interplay and rhythmic ideas are a little more modern no? This album has an "edge" to it. Plus they left the flute with Tiny Circles ;)
I'll dig up some Tull. I don't know what I should dig up other than Aqualung
I can see why someone would thin Tull, but it's far superior to Tull IMO.

Dig up Thick as a Brick and Living in the Past—there is no question that Wolf People are highly influenced by Jethro Tull, but they also very much have their own thing going on. I think the older Tull stuff comes into play too, especially on Tidings. I do like the flute, maybe they thought they were being too literal...or liTULLeral. HAHAHAHA
Anyway, I love this band and the new record, but that is a very bold statement, Fully, even if it's just your O.
Seeing them live the 30th of May
I know I listened to it when it came out, but Steeple fell through the cracks. A first listen to FAIN, and I can't believe the first one didn't catch my interest more. This one is a standout! It's got everything I like about foggy English psych-prog-folk, but with a touch of post-rock Tortise thrown in to keep the retro-critic at bay.
Looks like a NA tour in the fall (their first?), in the opening slot. Anyone know anything about UMO?

considering going to the Pittsburgh show, but not sure if it's worth it to see them open for a band I've never heard of.
$13 in Brighton. Early night if the headliner doesn't grab me. I'd say it's worth it.
Have they ever played the US before?
Listening to Unknown Mortal Orchestra on spotify and I don't think they're all that good. Don't see how they could be more headliner worthy than Wolf People. They do somehow have more likes on their facebook page than Wolf People.
Alright, they sound better live than on the album. Anyone else care to chime in?
Unknown Mortal Orchestra live in Paradiso (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEL2hG_Gxns#ws)
Yeah, not loving Unknown Mortal Orchestra so far (they do sound pretty cool live, though). But I would gladly pay whatever price to see Wolf People open for them or anybody else. In fact, I might be convinced to go to Pittsburgh on October 19th for just that reason, and hope some kind soul takes me to the Stillers game the next day.

Let me know if you can make it Crispy! As far as the Steelers game goes, I prefer to watch on the TV. I've only been to one regular season game and one preseason game.
So I recently saw Wolf People live for the second time. I was really impressed! This is one of these bands that sounds much better live than on record. Don't get me wrong, I love their albums, but their live show is just phenomenal! :cheesy: For example, I also saw Menomena recently and I really love their albums. Their live show however, was not that special IMO (but they had a bad day, singer was a bit sick). Wolf People's show was really something special! Highly recommended to see them live!

Ah Sidus you lucky dog! I'm sure they are going to add dates Crispy. If they don't, I intend on making the Pittsburgh show somehow.
So there is unbearable talking going on throughout this (Americans at that) but from 3:30-4:00ish on makes it all worth it. The jam towards the conclusion of When the Fire is Dead in the Grate is the highlight of many highlights scattered throughout Fain.

Well I guess it's very comparable to MMJ. The jams are great on CD, but in a live setting they're from an even higher level. Everything falls to place. Even Cromlech, which I usually skip on CD, sound great live. The guys are jamming all the time, high levels of energy. Only thing is that the show was quite short (1h20m), but of course they only have 2 albums out (they played every song).
These guys have the potential to become one of my all time favorites
Sidus, you are indeed a lucky dog. I am vowing to get to a Wolf People show this year, and hopefully they will get closer to me than Pittsburgh (ignoring Columbus), but it sounds like we might just have to have an Asshole gathering there anyway. Ruckus, you know the Steelers game is against the Ravens the next day? Quote from: Sidus on Jun 14, 2013, 05:29 AM

Well, it's not closer to me than Pittsburgh, but now Wolf People will be playing a few headlining gigs in NYC and Philly:
11th October 2013 – New York, NY – Knitting Factory, Brooklyn (headline gig)
12th October 2013 – Philadelphia, PA – Ortlieb's (headline gig)
13th October 2013 – New York, NY – Mercury Lounge (headline gig)
14th October 2013 – Boston, MA – Brighton Music Hall supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra
15th October 2013 – Montreal, QC – Cabaret Mile End supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra
16th October 2013 – Toronto, ON – Lee's Palace supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra
17th October 2013 – Detroit, MI – Magic Stick Lounge supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra
18th October 2013 – Columbus, OH – Ace of Cups supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra
19th October 2013 – Pittsburgh, PA – Altar supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra
20th October 2013 – Bloomington, IN – The Bishop (headline gig)
21st October 2013 – Chicago, IL – Lincoln Hall supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra
So, I am planning to go to the Philly and Mercury Lounge shows (Patty Griffin keeping me away from the first one)! Anybody else in?
Columbus looks like the closest for me, but Philly might be just as close.
Go to Philly, Fully! Holy alliteration! Ruckus and Kate will be there for sure, and I'll bet we can get a couple of those nutty Philly peeps to go too.

Buying Marge a bowling ball?
Haven't been this excited for a show in quite some time, even if it is at ortlieb's. Capacity is 120 and much of the club has poor sightlines to the stage. It is not a setup conducive to rocking out. The sound is very good however

Wolf People Announces When The Fire is Dead in the Grate 12"First Ever US Tour Starts Tomorrow in Brooklyn[/t][/t][/c][/t] When The Fire Is Dead In the Grate 12" ArtworkJagjaguwar's British band Wolf People have announced their brand new limited vinyl 12",When The Fire is Dead in the Grate. The single includes two new songs as well as two cuts from their April 2013 release, Fain. The 12" will be released on December 3rd, 2013. After the intricately detailed Fain was complete, "All Returns Pt 2" and "Become the Ground" were recorded in their small rehearsal space. These new songs bear less resemblance to the majority of Wolf People's output, with acoustic guitars, female vocals, a freer attitude and rougher arrangements. Side B: All Returns All Returns Part II[/t] Wolf People - "When The Fire Is Dead In The Grate" (Official Audio) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1L_J84iH1Q#)

I listened to Fain on the train this morning. Smooth like butta.
The formatting gods do hate you, Crispy; wonder if they'll have it for sale at the merch table this weekend?
Glad you guys are going to see them this weekend!!! I hope I can get my ass back to Pittsburgh by Friday, for their show here! Oh never mind, it's on the 19th and not the 18th, I'll totally be home! Oh thank GOD I don't have to rush back from Asheville! But I'm sorry I won't be able to make it down there in a timely way, to rock out with all you guys!
On another note, I was in such a mood the other day... I was out in the kitchen making soup, blasting the crap out of Fain and Steeple (and this eventually led to Tool of course.) But I'm glad it happened and reminded me of how important the show is!
Lordy, have fun ya'll!!!

Holy Shit Sidus! Finally saw them headline a small and wonderful sounding club in Philly in front of maybe 50 ish people, give or take and they exceeded all my excessive expectations. I fell for Wolf People hard right around when Steeple came out and Fain this year only topped their proper debut LP. I waited for three years for the opportunity to see them live and the wait was worth it. I could not recall ever being so excited to see a band live for the 1st time and fucking A they killed it!
Each instrument is equally vital to their sound unlike most other bands with the perfect guitar interplay between Jack and Joe while Tom and Dan lay down the tightest, funkiest rhythms. I can't think of of any other band that combines an intelligent prog rock aesthetic with tight, get down beats.
I acknowledge that part of my exuberance may be attributed to some recency bias but I cannot remember being that blown away by a show. They were all super nice and humble and the company of Crispy, Fully, jrud, and my wife (who is just as much a junkie) totally made the experience.
If anyone gets the chance to see them open for UMO, I recommend it. If you ever get the chance to see them headline anywhere, please go.

I believe you'll have more opportunities to see them in the future than we will, Mark. Good for you! As great as they are live, they are even better live! Seriously. It was a great show. I can't rank my concert experiences, but I know when I get that feeling inside of being moved by the music. When I can get lost in a show, which doesn't happen with every band or even every show of a band that moves me, then I know that band it the real thing. And believe me, I was moved.

That's the truth! Overheard in Bloomington on Sunday night, "They're even better live than they are on the albums, and those are unbelievable!" Understatement of the year, maybe.
They actually had a setlist on the stage for this one, which they hadn't done at the other two I saw. The first encore tune was written as "(Banks ?)," which would have been Banks of Sweet Dundee, and which would have caused my brain to explode had they played it, but alas, they were out of time.

That may be the most accurate typo I've ever made.
Holy moly, Crispy I had a whole thing written out here tellin' you about my situation, I guess I never sent it! D'oh. Or maybe I caught up with on fb about it.... Well, I wussed out big time, though. And by wussed out, I mean I drove into Pitt from Asheville the night before, got in around 1am or thereabouts, then had to work a 10 hour shift the day of the show, which wound up being cold and rainy (otherwise rather-appropriate weather for their sound!) Pretty sure I'd managed to procure a headache too, through it all. Total wuss. :undecided: I have got. to see them. next time. It hurts to have missed them!!!
And Fully, despite loving that typo, I LOVE that typo!!! That is actually adorable hahah! But double damn to have missed 'em this run. Ok, guilt trip time here..... maybe if all you a-holes were comin' to Pitt like originally planned 4 years ago, I would have womanned up and gone!!! Or you could have at least kept True some company while I lay at home, wussing out...... (sorry True!) Ok fine, I know it was closer for most of you to see them elsewhere. Maybe. Fine!! Next time we better be operating as one unit, please!!!! I did so enjoy your reports and pics, at least!!
