LD and I were considering this show, but then Tom Petty went on sale at the same venue, and then The Stones and then MMJ in August, all in LA.  And then Jim James sold out.  There's only so many times we can make the 6 hour drive (or fly) to LA for concerts.  I'm not too into Regions of Light, so that's why we didn't jump on it, even though I'm sure it will be much better live than on the album.  Kinda bummed we aren't seeing this tour, especially with all the good reports of extended jams and killer drumming and all that, but money and time are not in infinite supply.

The Fonda is across the street from the Pantages where MMJ played in 2011. The Blue Palms Brewery is where many met up before that show. It is also in the same building as the Fonda, and there is even a door between the two establishments. I was there a few months ago and people with wrist bands were going between the two without going outside. Not sure if it will be that way Saturday, but it is a pretty convenient place to meet up before the show.

Not going to the shows as I live in Illinois, but I will be very much pulling for Bermuda Highway!

My friend is a casual MMJ/Jim James fan, been to one MMJ show with me before he moved out to LA. Anyways, he was on the fence about going, but as soon as I told him they played Bermuda Highway in Chicago he bought tickets 10 minutes later ha. He loves that song and likes the new album, so the opportunity to hear the new album with a chance of Bermuda Highway was too much for him to pass up!

Keeping my fingers crossed for him!

Although Jim was amazing all evening, this show for me was ruined by the crowd. I have been to 300+ concerts and am a long time MMJ fan. I've been to 7 or 8 MMJ shows, mostly in Southern California. I have also been to many shows at the Fonda, especially recently. I must say that I have rarely encountered a worse crowd.

Due to some unforeseen circumstances we ended up on the floor towards the back to the right of the soundboard with no desire to shove our way closer.  Maybe because Jim had quite a few mellow moments, the bar seemed especially loud, with people talking, laughing, etc. I don't mind noise from the bar, especially at a venue like the Fonda where it can't be avoided, so that alone wasn't the problem, I just noticed more non drink buying/pouring noise than usual.  Also at least half of the people in our area talked though the entire show some people literally had their backs to the stage and were talking loudly to their friends. The people in front of us talked for 90% of the show. The crazy thing was that they seemed to be fans - for the 10% of the show that they weren't talking, they were actually singing along with Jim. At one point they huddled around an iphone and looked through pictures of Jim that one of them just took and discussing at the top of their lungs which one they should post on facebook. My friend and I were completely appalled. I really hope we just ended up in a bad area and the rest of the crowd was better, but I looked around and saw a lot of the same.

I tried to focus on Jim, and Jim was fantastic. The encore was breathtaking. It is a pleasure watching the man work.

Gotta love it when people let their obsession with their virtual existence fuck up their ability to enjoy their actual existence, and also fuck up the experience of everyone around them.

It is a balance. I have made couple videos from MMJ shows and last nights show, so I can be the doofus with an iPhone, and it is always a great thing to be able to see something you experienced the way you experienced it. I don't let it become an obsession, try to be very selective. I sure wish I could have had an iphone for my 1984 R.E.M. show with a crowd of about 200, or my dead center 9th row floor seats to the world premiere of The Wall in 1980. Better than a program.

I don't have any issues with people who record/take photos during the show. I completely understand wanting to take a piece of the show home. I enjoy watching people's recordings and I've taken a couple of pics myself here and there.

My issue is more with the super loud talking. I found it especially bizarre that people who are big enough fans to take photos of Jim and know some of the lyrics from his album would stand around during the show looking at their pictures and yelling about which one to post online. Very disrespectful to Jim and all the fans in their vicinity. I've seen it all before, just not to the level that it was happening at the Fonda last night.

I agree that there is a balance between capturing memories and not staring at your phone all night. SoCal crowds can be obnoxious at times, for sure. I was at the rail so didn't notice the crowd. ;)

Jim had pretty amazing energy all night and he certainly knows how to connect to the crowd. He's talked about the "exchange of love and music" between musicians/fans and I definitely felt that connection last night. Bermuda Highway was the main highlight for me, mostly for personal reasons. Brought a tear to my eye!

Agreed. What's the point of going to show if you aren't there to listen? Sorry they distracted  from your experience. That's a bummer. Had the same thing at Radiohead Santa Barbara a few years back. We were in the pit and there were literally people holding conversations around us. Some people just don't get it..

Misti, the worst experience I ever had of talkers ruining a show was also Radiohead on their last tour (in DC).  It really surprised me that people in really good seats seeing such a revered band that is pretty rare to get to see would want to talk loudly through some of the songs.

Johnny, this download made my day, seriously. Curiously though, it came with no song titles and in a completely random order. I can fix it, but I was wondering if others had the same issue.

Amazing you got such a good pic of Jim on the acoustic. Was that during the MMJ songs? You were 18 inches to the left of me, and if you check out my video, the lighting was impossible. You must be a secret photo expert.

Thanks for posting this!  I must have been right behind you because I can definitely hear myself woo-ing in satisfaction throughout the video.

This was seriously an excellent, ridiculously awesome show.  I feel so priveleged to have seen this tour, as I imagine Jim probably won't keep playing this album once the Jacket shows start back up and they get to work on their new album in the fall.  It's good to hear in interviews that Jim would like to play some of the solo material with MMJ - I'd definitely like to hear their take on All Is Forgiven or God's Love (both were explosive live and quite reminiscent of MMJ-ish live-type jams).  Also AEIOU was a freakin' stellar live song.  Every song off the album shone brightly in it's extended live format.  Jim and his band take a great album to new, imaginiative places.

I was really loving the Floyd vibe that was going on all over this show - especially in the God's Love end jam.

It was really fun to see Conor come out and sing on Dear God.  Funny how much he was trying to hide behind the cape.  He gave a very playful performance.

His Master's Voice was definitely a highlight and Changin' World was an epic closer.  Love the lyrics and the jammin' on that one.

So excited for Wilco/MMJ/Dylan in Irvine, in August!
