1st saw MMJ on April 23rd, 2003 at Exit In Nashville. The show where the guy in the crowd stopped JJ dead cold in the middle of I Will Be There When You Die (and you could literally hear a pin drop) by saying, "Do you know how fucking stupid you look up there?"
1. Dancefloors
2. Lowdown
3. The Dark
4. One Big Holiday
5. I Will Sing You Songs
6. The Bear
7. Evelyn Is Not Real
8. Just One Thing
9. Heartbreakin Man
10. The Way That He Sings
11. Mahgeetah
12. Steam Engine
----------
13. Golden (Jim James solo)
14. I Will Be There When You Die (Jim James solo)
15. Easy Morning Rebel
OK, and then what happened?!
Cool setlist. It's hard imagining a show where One Big Holiday is played and it isn't the closer. Please continue the story on how the terrible individual was rude to Jim. Hopefully he was asked to leave.
Sooooo, Jim stopped as everyone told the guy to stfu and Jim said, "You want to get up here and play?" and the guy said, "Maybe I should" and then started to get pushed back out of the crowd as Jim said, "We're all having such a great moment and some asshole has to fuck it up," and then goes straight in to > There will be bigotry and there will be open minds!!
It's in this thread with the "drunk ahole" actually chiming in, defending his actions>

Interesting story. I'm glad that doesn't happen at shows nowadays. The worst I've seen is throwing glowsticks at the band. What ended up being the "new song" people were referring to?

I think it's another meeting of the class of 1980....
Tracy thanks for that story. I should have been at that show and I regret that I didn't finally see MMJ live until 2010.
I was living in Memphis in 2003 and I was aware of MMJ because of the essay in the Oxford American magazine music issue and the track Evelyn Is Not Real. I was intrigued enough to want to see them live, but I don't think they played Memphis 2003-2005 or if they did, I missed it. It didn't occur to me to check to see if they were coming to Nashville. I might've made the trek if I had known. Things would've been different for me, I'm sure, if I had seen them live back in 2003.

Didn't they play Memphis in May a couple of years ago? Pretty positive that's their only trip to Memphis, which always seemed odd to me.
They played one other time at Cooper young Deli-I think. I want to say it was 2004, but don't quote me on that.

Date? I don't recall that happening. Haven't checked the archive, but I was following them pretty closely back then and don't recall a Memphis date.
Cheers Tracy!!

OK, I can believe 2002. Thanks! But it's not listed in the archive? Guess they were the opener?

Also, it looks like they were supposed to play there again 4/15/03 - http://www.thefader.com/2003/03/26/my-morning-jacket-dawn-springtime-windbreakers-for-april-may-tour/ (http://www.thefader.com/2003/03/26/my-morning-jacket-dawn-springtime-windbreakers-for-april-may-tour/) but the showfinder skips a few dates and lists your Nashville show as the first in April, 2003.....maybe they dropped those first few April dates.....
My 10 year is coming up too. Pretty similar set list. I'm lucky enough to have it on DVD.
