Title: How do YOU cope with post-show Jacket fever?
Post by: oistheone on Jul 17, 2013, 02:35 PM
Jacket fever. It's a feeling we all know too well. And as it often does after attending a killer show, it's hittin' me hard.

How do you cope? How do you lessen symptoms?

Do you frantically find a way to see more shows on the tour?

Do you play it cool and do nothing but cherish the memories?

Right now my fever is so bad that I'm finding it hard to justify NOT going to Mexico and ruining myself financially in the process. It's THAT bad. But you just KNOW that something else will be announced -- something else that will seem equally unmissable. Do you hold out for the unknown? How do you choose?!

Any remedies accepted.

I just keep feeding the jones, and try to get to another show ASAP. I find coming down from Jacket fever a bit easier than waiting for that next show fix. The high carries me for a bit, but if there's no show on the horizon, I'm Mr. Jones!

Think positive.....You know the band isn't breaking up and will be around again at some point.  If making another show isn't realistic, I'd try to be content with other bands you like and checking out their shows.  Of course, it won't be as good as MMJ but it can tide you over until next time.

Geez, there goes Fully again taking us down the butt-chugging trail.

Mr Whippy and APR, there will be no such behavior at the MPP pre-party since you will soon be getting your fix.

What you do afterwards, however, when you come down from your MMJ high, is up to you  :bath:

I obsess myself with things like:

1. What inspiration is going to direct the new MMJ album?
2. What unique ways/setting is the new MMJ album going to be recorded?
3. Will we get another MMJ headlining tour prior to a new album coming out?
4. When will the guys start recording the new album (Oct/13?)?
5. Will a new song off the new album be debuted live soon?
6. Will there be a NYE show this year (Chicago please!)?
7. Will there be another multi-show in one city run soon?
8. Any significance to Patrick never wearing shoes/socks while drumming?
9. Any feedback on Eric's replacement on tour this year and how things have been going?

Ok I'm done for now.......

Is there anything that could possibly seem more unmissable than this? This is definitely the most unmissable jacket event ever, other than maybe T5. That can't be decided til after the fact, though. Unless they announce a 12 day run at Machu Picchu for free, I think you should spend all your money on this. I don't know anyone else's situation financially, but when this was announced I knew I was going because I knew it meant about 15 extra shifts between June to October. A little extra tired here and there. Totally worth it.

Some quality suggestions here! Ranging from the truth-telling enabler (e_wind) to the wise and responsible (APR) to the mystic and contemplative (CHIMMJFAN) and to the wacky but practical (Fully).

Seems as though we all handle the Fever differently, and there is no TRUE cure. I thought a good nights' sleep might do the trick, but my symptoms are still as present as ever. Perhaps the cure lies in all-out hibernation?!

That's the thing -- you don't know jusssst how unmissable this is until after the fact. I mean, no matter what, it's pretty much unmissable. The first official MMJ destination festival -- OBH is going to be unreal. But what if they announced something else UNREAL going down in December? It's hard to put all the eggs in the Mexico basket when it's almost guaranteed something else awesome will be announced down the road, something that would require travel.

I guess it's a question of cost vs benefit! Mexico would be a 10 in the cost department, 10 in the sweet department. Buttttt something like Louisville NYE or a T5-esque run (just spitballin' here) would be a 4 or 5 in the cost department and could hit high-digits in the sweet department. I think I've just developed an official Jacket fever show-going formula.

I've got a fever and the only perscription is more MMJ!
Seriously, after a show is almost like how you feel when you come home from your honeymoon.  Reality sinks in and you wonder...how long till I can see them again and have that feeling?  That incredible feeling you get whe you are watching them & listening to them?

I find discussing past shows or upcoming shows that I may be going to helps and re living or describing past shows to other friends helps as well.  I thought I was crazy being bummed after a show.  But they've been touring alot and Jim as well, so I feel pretty damn blessed to see MMJ, Carl and Jim many times in the past 2 years. :cheesy:

Then you may just have to go to one more AmericanAramalamadingdong show. I know after two I had planned on being finished, so on the spur of the moment I went to Tuscaloosa. It helped.   I wasn't expecting these shorter sets to ignite mine either, but then they gave us such great sets and the ignition turned on. I've seen Jim's show several times this year thinking that it would ride me over during a drought year.  Then along came this tour which I wasn't just thrilled about going in. It was better than nothing, but it wasn't full metal Jacket. Then I went and BOOM! So even though I'm mocking our fever, I get your point and empathize.

It was better than nothing, but it wasn't full metal Jacket. Then I went and BOOM! So even though I'm mocking our fever, I get your point and empathize.
You know it's like to old saying....hindsight is 20/20.  I had a genuine blast at the MMJ show on July 12th and the 3 Jim shows especially seeing Carl open for him in Nashville.  But now I wish I had purchased tix to another MMJ show.  I agree that even though the sets are shorter, they seem to be putting lots of thought into what to play at which venue/city.
I wished for Masterplan and Golden.  They played both!  I remember wishing for the same thing at the Charter One show a couple of years ago, so I thought that since they were playing another Chicago show they might play those songs again.
As I have said in the past.........Unitl I see My Morning Jacket again, my Jacket will be in mourning

Found a good remedy for Jacket fever when more shows are financially and practically impossible:

Go to your best stereo setup and blast the shit outta live MMJ. It works best if you do this treatment every day, for two hours at least.

How to prevent annoying the neighbors, you ask? Blast Wu-Tang for hours before that. Neighbors will be IRATE, possibly even telling you to turn that shit down. THEN, flip on the MMJ, who even at their most hardcore still sound like angels compared to the vulgar barks of ODB.

So we pretty much already do something like this in our neighborhood.  Kitty Korner from me is my good mmj friend and owner of the lounge.  Usually (when weather permits) Saturday mornings, afternoons, and evenings, Sunday mornings, afternoons and evenings and any other days/nights I dj and unless otherwise requested, it's mostly MMJ starting with Live at Red Rocks or Cicurital.
Hell I always listen to them.  I'm an avid swimmer and even bought a water proof cover for my Ipod to listen to them while swimming, but it just didn't sound right under the water :bath:
I've decided that since I can't go to Mexico, I'm going to see Jim in Madison WI and pray that Carl decides to tour with him  :cheesy:

I have good days and I have bad days. On the good days I think back to the most recent MMJ show I've been to (Americanarama) and remember how awesome it was.  So then I get that euphoric feeling and it's all good.

On bad days, I hang out on the forum a lot and on the MMJ FB obsessing over when a new show will be announced.  I know I have issues, but admitting you have a problem is the first step, right?

You're awesome..........I'm the same as you.   I think of going to Americanarama at Toyota Park, tailgating on a wonderful sunny, breezy Chicago day.  Then when I have no more tickets waiting to be used in my MMJ drawer, I fantasize about some super cool show they'll be doing.

Thanks Patti! Glad to know that I'm not the only one who is "slightly mental" when it comes to this band. I guess everybody on this forum kinda falls under that category.

Yeah...everyone on this forum is a little bit special :cheesy:  I use to think I was kind of weird about the band.  Then, when I went to Forecastle and really saw what the fans were like and how much they gravitated to their music, I was super stoked!

I have both met and chatted on line with awesome people.

I decided to see one more Jim James show in Madison, WI to help me smoothe over the winter.  No Mexico for me :undecided:
