Red Hot + Fela is the 18th in a series of original albums to raise money and awareness in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. The release includes classic Fela anthems like "Lady" recorded by tUnE-yArDs, Questlove, Angelique Kidjo, and Akua Naru, "Zombie" recorded by Spoek Mathambo, Cerebral Cortex, and Frown, and "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" recorded by My Morning Jacket, Merrill Garbus (from tUnE-yArDs), and Brittany Howard (from Alabama Shakes) and "Sorrow, Tears & Blood" reworked by the Kronos Quartet along with TV On The Radios' Kyp Malone and Tunde Adembimpe.
I remember back in 2006 at northwestern U when MMJ played a extended version of Don Dante that was basically a jam on fela kuti's "trouble sleep yang wake AM"

and every since I have always been forced to listen to that audience recording that has a lot of annoying talking kids.. will be cool to have this to listen to instead!
Oooh, interesting! Thanks for sharing!
This is great! I have loved hearing that live version, and it'll be so nice to have it here (and without a few of those weird notes from somebody's sax).
According to iTunes the track is 14 minutes long!!
The entire album is streaming on NPR: http://www.npr.org/2013/09/29/226165955/first-listen-red-hot-fela (http://www.npr.org/2013/09/29/226165955/first-listen-red-hot-fela)

This was my 2nd show. It was a show for students and I had to stalk the campus for a ticket. I think I payed like $ 60 to the greedy little bastard. I can't blame him for the cost of the tuition at NU. I saw it in the show taping archives. I'm gonna have to DL tonight when I get home.
I can't get enough of this right now!
Wow, that is so good. And different.
on Fallon next friday, 10/11
Does anybody know when this was recorded?
"Like new" CD available on eBay for $5.95 + $2.50 shipping. Ends in an hour...

Thanx, CC.
Soooo sweet. Hope this may be some indication of where the new record may be going.
The boys never cease to amaze!
this would be a great sound for their new album very very exotic. It's an amazing performance.

Wow! So great to learn the history of that. I think they played that Dondante version a few times that year, maybe even at Bonnaroo?
Yeah, my recording of the 2006 Bonnaroo has the Fela Kuti jam worked in to Dondante so seamlessly, amazing to discover where that jam is from all of these years later.
This song definitely stood out for me at the Times Square show...had never heard it, and now I have these lyrics trapped in my head:
When Trouble sleep,
Yanga go wake am,
Waking him dey find
PALAVER, HE DEY FIND
Palaver, he go get-e o)
PALAVER, HE GO GET
Palaver
When cat sleep,
Rat go bite him tail,
Waking him dey find,
PALAVER, HE DEY FIND
Palaver, he go get-e o
PALAVER, HE GO GET
Palaver
Tenant lost him job,
Him sit down for house,
Him dey think of job,
Mr. Landord come wake am up,
He say, "Mister, pay me your rent"
Waking him dey find
PALAVER, HE DEY FIND
Palaver, he go get-e o
PALAVER, HE GO GET
Palaver
My friend just come from prison,
Him dey look for work,
Waka waka day and night,
Police man come stop am for road,
He say, "Mister, I charge you for wandering"
Waking him dey find
PALAVER, HE DEY FIND
Palaver, he go get-e o
PALAVER, HE GO GET
Palaver
Mr. Husband marry for church,
He make big party,
Then he start to spray,
Because him love him wife,
Him say, "wife come run away"
Bank manager run come,
He say, "Mister, pay me your debt"
Waking him dey find, for Lagos e-o
PALAVER, HE DEY FIND
Palaver, he go get-e o
PALAVER, HE GO GET
Palaver
When Trouble sleep,
Yanga go wake am,
Waking him dey find
PALAVER, HE DEY FIND
Palaver, he go get-e o
PALAVER, HE GO GET

a bit of insight into the lyrics.....
Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am: Broken English translation of 'Trouble Sleep Yanga Am' literally means: 'toying with a loaded gun' or 'playing with fire'. It is a song talking about the limit to human endurance. Mr. Trouble is lying quietly and Mr. Provocation (yanga) goes to play around him. What else could he be looking for except palaver. A good example of such trouble-shooting is that of a man who has just got out of prison and goes about desperately looking for work in order to avoid what led him to jail. While at it, a police man stops and charges the man for wandering. Fela asks what could the police man be looking for, but trouble. It is like when a cat is asleep and a rat goes to bite its tail. Or a tenant who has just lost his job, sitting quietly thinking of where his next meal will come from. His landlord comes knocking, demanding his rent. Of cause he will get trouble bigger than the rent he came to collect. Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am simply means there is a limit to any human endurance.

Wow, thanks for posting that. SO MUCH in there it gives the tune added depth. Love it.
That Fallon video is fantastic. Definitely jealous of all of you that made it to Times Square just for this performance.
I inexplicably JUST got around to watching the Fallon performance.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Now THAT'S what they call a smokin' cut! One of the band's deepest grooves ever. And I love me a good groove.

Sorry, I also meant in Mexico. I wanted to hear Ready to be Called On and Trouble Sleep last year at OBH. I have Fela's album and this album and I absolutely love the original song and MMJ's version is fantastic. I think I listened to it for a week straight on repeat when it first came out. But thank you very much!
I think "Trouble sleep Yanga wake am" would go seamlessly into Dondonte or vice versa.
Dondonte >Trouble sleep> Dondonte would make for a massive 30-40 min face melt!
Just one guys opinion

Well shit, Crispy guess I'm as dumb as I thought I was (and missed that post) or I actually have a relevant thought occasionally :undecided:. The ppl at that show had no clue. They're thinking it's just some weird Dondonte intro or, what it sounds like from the recording, just not paying attention at all. The boys are straight up playing "Trouble sleep" and singing "Dondonte" over it for the first two verses. Then Patrick changes up his drum pattern and BLAM they're playin straight "Dondonte". Pretty fuckin cool...

You bet! I remember hearing the recording back then and thinking, "gee, that jam sounds familiar..." I was also one of those that didn't have a clue!
I never realized that this is also on Spotify. It doesn't show up under My Morning Jacket though. You have to search by song name. I wonder if there are any other MMJ songs on Spotify that don't show up when you search by artist?
While we're on the subject of Fela, 4 of his 6 first albums were pressed on the
"His Masters Voice" label.
COINCIDENCE...!?! Yeh, probably :)
Holy crap this would sound good under the stars on the sand in mexico.
