Title: 2014 Festivals
Post by: e_wind on Jan 14, 2014, 12:20 PM
What line ups are looking good so far?

Coachella's and NOLA Jazz Fest's look pretty underwhelming, but both are boasting a couple pretty great acts.

I actually think NOLA looks great, would love to go the first weekend for the Santana>Phish>Clapton trifecta.

yeah the more I look at the line up the more I like it.
I can't load the daily line up's, but if Bruce and SCI are on the same weekend, I may have to go.

Santana, Clapton, Phish in one weekend is a pretty guitar solo heavy weekend. I don't mean that in a bad way.

i didn't even notice Isbell on the list.
I'm not sure how I feel about Public Enemy playing shows in 2014, but it could be cool.

yeah I take that back. I think the underwhelming part is that no matter what the line up is, I'd realistically only see about 1/5 of what I wanted to see. But I take it back either way.

I may be biased because I am going, but it's hard for me to feel like Coachella is very underwhelming.

It's got what is said to be the only shows by The Replacements in 2014, Outkast, and what is probably one of the very few US shows by The Knife on the first night at the top of the bill.

Saturday has one of the best hard rock bands in the world right now (Queens of the Stone Age) and Muse who put on a damn good live show.  Also Pet Shop Boys, whose 2013 tour got serious rave reviews closing out one of the tents.

Sunday has Beck, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Arcade Fire at the top of the line.

Also, tons of intersting mid-tier acts with Afghan Whigs, Motorhead, The Cult, Jagwar Ma, Superchunk, Darkside, Warpaint, Frank Turner J Roddy, and many others.

I think alot of people are turned off by Coachella by all the cheesy EDM and pop stuff near the top of it, but those things will conveniently draw huge crowds while great acts play on smaller stages to very comfortable crowds at the same time.

I know it's not real fair to compare Coachella and Fifefly, which is a much smaller festival with probably much less resoruces for booking talent, but I feel like Firefly's lineup looks very un-diverse compared to Coachella, and it would not take lots of resources to pull together a diverse lineup.

I've got three that are on my list. I do like Jazzfest though I'm not going. I'm hoping Shaky Knees is a bad lineup bc I'd like to do Bonnaroo and Forecastle.

(Whippy, I wasn't impressed with Coachella until you broke it down and I thought about it.)

I feel like a big thing I look for in festivals is ones that offer something unique, that you can only experience there, instead of just a collection of who happens to be touring/available.

Coachella didn't do as good of a job this year as they have done in some other years of securing rare things you can't see elsewhere, but they probably will have done a better job than just about any other festival when it is all said and done.

Bonnaroo generally doesn't get many rare acts, but it is also good at offering things you can only see there, due to the superjams/collaborations, potential to see acts do late night shows, long set times, etc.

Also, in extolling the virtues of Coachella this year, I can't believe I fogot to mention Byran Ferry, GOAT, and Mogwai.

Totally agree.  I"ve been lucky enough to attend one different festival each of the last three years, and it rained at every one.   I plan on going to one this year but am waiting to see where the lineup takes me.  And then we'll know when the rain is coming.

Still a lot of fests to announce so don't write off an MMJ appearance yet.  The one(s) they play (if they do) will be all the more special.   There was a lot of similarity between the festivals  last summer in the U.S..... like Mr. Whippy said kind of getting whoever was touring/available.

Keep the updates coming magh33ta and parkervb.  I appreciate them!

It's gotta be Outkast.  They said they're doing 40 festivals.  That small rectangle on the upper right of the announcement isn't large enough to fit the words "My Morning Jacket."

I wouldn't be so sure.  Take all this with a grain of salt - wishful thinking on my part since I don't like Outcast.

First of all, there's been no inclination that the organizer, a hardcore Rock/Beard Music booking guy, would book something of that genre.

Second of all, Outkast has been announced on a ton of festivals so far.   I realize they said they are doing "40", but it doesn't seem to hold up any of the other festivals from releasing their names.   What legalize would prevent SK from saying Outkast?

Lastly, there is another Festival in Georgia, two weeks earlier and 70 miles from Atlanta - CounterPoint - where Outkast is headlining.

My hope is that it's a pretty big name that can't say until after Bonnaroo announces next month.   Possibly MMJ which would send me into the stratosphere.

I agree the last headliner is probably not Outkast.  I am not sure if the third headliner is MMJ, but I would be surprised if MMJ didn't make any festival bill this year.

I am liking some of the names showing up on the festival lineups this year.  I am still holding out for Forecastle, as it is the closest and most convenient festival for me.  I would love to see The National headline it.  And I could not care less about Outkast...

Good points.  I believe you're right based on all of them especially the last one about the other festival in Georgia they're playinig.  I never heard of that one.  No way they're playing two festivals that close in time and area.  I'm not into Outkast either.

If it is MMJ, then I can't begin to describe how stoked I'd be.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I could see the top of the Roo lineup looking something like this:

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Elton John (heavily rumored)
DMB/Widespread/misc jam closer
(Big popular hip hop act -- thinking Drake. Maaaaybe Outkast but I think they're more likely for Forecastle)
Jack White
My Morning Jacket

Looks like Roo is doing their BLAM show at night this year, and also will be hosting watch parties scattered across North America. Feel like I have to go to this, just on the off-chance of winning tickets!

Also, Outkast has signed on to play a festival in Poland on Roo weekend, so that just about eliminates them, while at the same time making them seem extremely likely for Forecastle. As if the HEY YA hints posted by FC weren't obvious enough.

The Shaky Knees lineup is unreal, especially with that Replacements add! It's just missing a certain Jacket-sais-quoi.

Once the other lineups are released I'll be able to make a much more informed decision.

All music festivals should ignore the principles of commerce and just host LINEUP DAY where every lineup gets dumped at the exact same minute and breaks the internet.

Still waiting for that WHAM lineup to be announced. Not a festival called WHAM but a lineup that makes hits you like WHAM -- I GOTTA BE THERE!! There's at least one every year, but this far into announcement season, I'm WHAMless. Granted, it's still very, very early.

shaky knees did it for me.

I was underwhelmed when Shaky Knees made their third headliner Alabama Shakes, yet I would love to go at least for the weekend. After I see Roo's and Forecastle's lineups, I'll need to pick my fests.

All of my favorite artists playing Shaky Knees are spread out over the three days.  Not sure what to do.  Anyone remember when the late night acts were announced at Shaky Knees last year?   I thought they were listed early on.  The Roo and Forecastle announcement will help with the decision.

yes, they were.

This year the organizers have said there will be "more" late night shows, for what it's worth.   So far, they've announced one:  Ghost, on Friday night.   A band I haven't heard, but read that announcement while at OBH w/ Mr Whippy and he gave an instant thumbs down.

I've had my eye on this, can't figure out how to get there.   Just had a meeting in Tampa snowed out so maybe I can reschedule around this.   Dinky festivals with VIP sections are great ways to meet the bands.

Good rumors continue to fly too...

Ulster County Legislator Chris Allen, D-Saugerties, said the bands My Morning Jacket and Bassnectar are among the acts expected for the festival, which will span multiple days and offer camping. Helsmoortel said 20,000 people are expected to attend.

There's gotttttta be another headliner in there. Outkast already has Osheaga and OVO Fest booked that weekend, and the biggest moneymaker in music is hitting up the LOO circuit in one weekend, so I definitely expect them to be at Lolla.

Arcade Fire have shows in Chicago later in the month, so that seemingly makes them unlikely but I've got this weird suspicion that Lolla may break their radius clause for such a huge act at the top of their game. I also imagine the AF dates in Chicago are sold out anyway.

The format of Lolla is to have either 5 or 6 headliners, but the remaining 1 or 2 would have to be freaking awesome to make up for the tired dreck (Eminem, Skrillex, KOL) and one decent act that has no business headlining a US festival (Arctic Monkeys) that have already been confirmed.

Pearl Jam is rumored to be another headliner.  There was some sort of tweet or retweet from Lolla hinting of PJ.

Is it just me or is this the weakest crop of festival lineups in long time? Just a few summers ago, festival culture was booming. But now with shared headliners and the proliferation of festivals just about everywhere, is the market about to burst?

There are definitely some good lineups out there this summer. But there hasn't been that one huge "get" that drops the jaw. With  ACL and Outside Lands (and maybe Voodoo?) left as major festivals still to announce lineups, there's still a chance.

Call me crazy, but I still think Forecastle is the best lineup announced so far, with honorable mentions to Governor's Ball and Coachella. Roo and Lolla really dropped the ball this year.

I came here to post the exact same thing.  I think the lollapolooza lineup is weak and the headliners are horrible (I do love Arctic Monkeys, but don't think that is a board favorite). I fear ACL will be basically the same thing.  I know this is a tired music argument but they are catering to the masses (selling out).
