I agree.  I am saying these are my current favorite albums and not claiming that these are the top 20 best albums ever made.  But i do think several of these could be in the debate

  15. The Wrens - The Meadowlands

The other albums on your list make me think that I should dig this one out and give it a spin again.  Haven't listened to it in years, and can't really say it made much of an impression when I bought it.

I finally updated my list.

There are some pretty good picks on these lists so far.

Here's my stab at this, very current as in off the top of my head without much thought.  This would probably change if I gave it even 5 more minutes of consideration.  I numbered it just to count to 20, but the numbers don't reflect order other than that.

1.  MMJ – Tie between Z and ISM
2.  Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
3.  Radiohead – Kid A
4.  Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers
5.  Spiritualized – Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space
6.  The Verve – Urban Hymns
7.  Jane's Addiction – Ritual de lo Habitual
8.  Neil Young – Tonight's the Night
9.  Television – Marquee Moon
10. Tool – Lateralus
11. Soundgarden – Superunknown
12. Jeff Buckley – Grace
13. My Bloody Valentine – Loveless
14. Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti
15. Smashing Pumpkins – Gish
16. The Who – Quadrophenia
17. Bob Dylan – Blood on the Tracks
18. Sonic Youth – Daydream Nation
19. The Stooges – Funhouse
20. Richard and Linda Thompson – I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight

I strongly support this list.  I debated putting many of these on mine.  In fact my list is a little too heavy on recent greats and does not hit the classics.  I blame that on classic rock fatigue.

This is fun, and hard to limit, but I was able to keep it to 25, and choosing just one from a specific group. I think this list is a pretty accurate representation of the albums I've listened to most throughout my life (in order of release, I think):

1. The Beatles - The Beatles
2. Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
3. The Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East
4. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
5. John Denver - Rocky Mountain High
6. Frank Zappa - Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation
7. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
8. Grateful Dead - One from the Vault
9. Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
10. Rush - Exit...Stage Left
11. Van Halen - Fair Warning
12. Jerry Garcia Band - Jerry Garcia Band
13. Cocteau Twins - Four Calendar Cafe
14. Jeff Buckley - Grace
15. Wilco - Summerteeth
16. Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts
17. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
18. My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
19. Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway
20. Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere
21. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
22. Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther
23. Hopewell - Beautiful Targets
24. Ryan Adams - Cold Roses
25. Wolf People - Steeple

great lists, please keep them coming.  I have a lot of albums I need to revisit.

So Zeppelin question.  I was at record store this weekend and they were playing III.  I forgot how much I loved this album.   Would anyone every put III at the top of the Zeppelin albums?

I'd put Zeppelin up there seeing as how I saw them in 1977

A few to put on my list of some older stuff from 70's - early 90's.

Robin Trower - Bridge of sighs - Because I remember partying with twin my brother and friends to this one.
Peter Frampton - Live - same reason
B52's - The B52's - Cause even the cops were dancing at the greek theater to their show in 1980!
Aerosmith - Toys in the attic - I was probably only one of a few that fell asleep during this tour.  Too much to drink - I guess
The Innocents - The Innocents - cause you can't find this album anywhere, but what a great bunch of tracks.
REM - Automatic for the people & Monster.
The Police - Synchronicity.
Roxy Music - Avalon.
U2 - Joshua Tree.  What a great album and tour!!! They still rock!!
Where do I stop?  So many good albums

Yes, I definitely would.  I love LZ III.  I kept my list to one album per artist (though I couldn't do that with MMJ), but if I would have included two Zep albums it would have been III and Physical Graffiti.

Some things I really regretted not including after I made my list:

Faith No More - Angel Dust
Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle
Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
Uncle Tupelo - March 16-20 1992
REM - Automatic for the People

Not sure if any of these would knock others off the list if I had to keep it to 20, but they are other ones that came to my mind after putting my initial list together.

Out of all the bands, Led Zeppelin is probably the most fluid when it comes to my favorite album. Any one of them could fit the bill for me, and it's usually the last one I listened to. III is queued up next!

Since the topic asks for "current top albums", which I assume means favourites that often rotate or change over time, here's some that come to mind that I always seem to reach for when I'm in need of a boost (I'm at work so I'll have to edit this when I have time; also, some classic albums I'm just plain sick of hearing since I've burned them out long ago):

Led Zeppelin I
The Stooges - Funhouse
Nick Drake - Pink Moon

The MC5 - Kick Out The Jams
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Arcade Fire - Funeral
The White Stripes - Icky Thump
The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Behind The Music

... and anything by Canadian jazz guitar great Lenny Breau

OH, Band of Gypsys, hell yes, I forgot that one.

I'm guessing you meant Pink Moon from Nick Drake, but I can understand the extra influence of Television coming into play there.

Yes, love it.

I love both Dead Weather albums, but they aren't for the faint of heart. Nasty revisionist heavy blues rock at its finest.
