As seen on r/mymorningjacket - maybe a double album is happening?
"A close friend lives in Louisville who knows a bunch of folks close to the band... they've recorded 40+ songs in the studio since October... so expect a double album and fall tour, a NYE run, and OBH2"
just read that post, wow, I'm not sure what to think lol very exciting
Where did you see this? Would make sense they have been recording forever
There's been rumors... We'll see....
As if I didn't have enough shit to speculate about.
My first thought is HOLY SHIT NEW TUNES FUCK YEAH!
My second thought (which IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWS the first) is OKAY HOW THE FUCK AM I GONNA AFFORD ALL THIS? Hit up shows in the fall? Hold out for NYE?! Abstain until Mexico?
My head is spinning so fast right now I might take off like a helicopter.
I'd say it is a possibility.
As of OBH, after talking to Pats parents on night two, they told me the boys had recorded 17 songs at that point. Since then they have been in the studio recording more, putting finishing touches etc. I'd say it's a big possibility.
I personally would love to see them put out a double album as I'm optimistic that the quality would remain high as always. Also, that means more songs to rock out too.
Would any of you not want a double album? Why or why not?
I'd love a double album!
Maybe this will be their greatest album to date.
Is it time they change the average set time from 2.5 hrs to a full 3 hrs so they can fit all these songs in?
That sounds like so much fun!
This would be awesome!

This was on the MMJ subreddit. It's just somebody on the internet, so it could just be speculation - but how great would that be?!?!

Is there a logical reason to not want a double album? The only thing I could think of is if it was half filler, but I doubt that with all the time they are taking. I think a double is what they need at this point in their career.

They definitely need something with a little more umph than that of Circuital. How long does is normally take them to finish recording a record once they start? Anyone remember?
How long should an album be before it is considered a double album? Most albums are approximately 40 minutes, so 80? But AD and ISM are nearly 80 minutes in length, and yet, they aren't considered double albums right?
I think, generally, a double album is an album that appears on two discs, regardless of length.
Now, typically the only reason you would have a double album is if the length of your album went over standard disc time (80 minutes), but there have been artists who have broken out double albums that would have fit on a single disc (Ben Harper's Both Sides of the Gun comes to mind - it was only an hour long album, but that was done because the tone of the songs was so different from disc to disc that he thought it necessary to break them out).
But yeah, in general I would say over 80 minutes.
the only possible downside I can think of for a double album (and this is reaching a bit!) is they're likely to pull very heavily from the new album for the tour setlists, and with so many new songs you could get shows comprised of almost entirely new album material. But that's nitpicky!
If it is indeed a double album, I'm sure there is going to be an even more ridiculously expensive boxed set that I will have to buy.

This is cool with me as long as the new songs can hold their weight against the older songs. Circuital songs are always a drag at shows (besides Wonderful, VD, and Slow Slow IMO).

All of these are realistic assumptions. New album format might be a full album plus an EP - 18-20 new songs all in.
In this day of singles, it would be great to see MMJ go completely against the grain and make it a double.
that would be pretty awesome!
just hope it comes out soon!

well according to Mr. White, Jim said the album may not be out til next Spring.
Hold on. I only asked Jim about when they might be playing their next show in Louisville. I didn't say anything to him about the album. He just mentioned that they were still working on it. He also said he didn't know right now when they would be playing a show in Louisville and that it might not be until the spring. I guess you can infer a lot from that, but then again, who knows. Maybe the album will come out earlier than the spring, and they will make the rounds of radio and TV shows with a few gigs sprinkled in before kicking off a major 2 year tour. Plus, Louisville might not be the site of a tour kick-off. It may land in the middle of the tour or even at the end. Who knows. I didn't really want to quiz him over it.
this is good stuff like the idea of a 2 year tour.

First, I dig Circuital (while it's my least favorite outing of theirs). But I think the boys are in a much different place as a band than they were then. They also were recording some of those songs for their muppets venture so it felt like they just threw those in with the rest to make Circuital.
With no muppets to worry about and the boys doing so many different things musically, I think we are looking at an awesome album to come!

Third party interpretation. I believe bartel meant "why have they
now become the best band" as opposed to years earlier.
so would double album mean two cd's with the same type of music, but they just couldn't fit it on one cd? or does it mean two different cds at the same time? eg. if they released At Dawn with two cds or if they released At Dawn and It Still Moves at the same time?

Or At Dawn with more At Dawn songs (Chills/EP Stuff etc). Just too much to fit on one album.
It could be cool if they did a "concept" of a theme of each of the two albums. Whatever it may be, it's gonna be AWESOME!
Its time for them to make an album that makes us forget about the earlier gems for a while. Im tired of going to their shows and waiting out the circuital stuff for the real early stuff. Its time to push boundaries and blow everything wide open again.
it's a good sign when a band that thinks like a lot of us here do, likes the same kind of music a lot of us here do, actually listen to what some of us here have to say goes into the studio to record an album and pretty much likes everything they recorded. I think it's gonna be awesome, whatever it is, and we are all gonna dig it...but I mean I also thought Circuital was gonna be a lot more than it ended up being so don't listen to a word I say

I didn't get into MMJ until after EU was out, but I could imagine that people were pretty stoked to hear Touch Me Pt. 2 and Smokin' for the first time right? The rest of the album could definitely have some more meat to it, but those songs are killer.

This is about when i jumped on board as well. Initially i was in love with evil urges and z and it took me quite a while to understand the first three albums. Once i did... Its all i really want to hear now. Sort of... Because i know they have played those songs a million times before i was even listening to good music.. So to expect them to rehash to the degree i would like is a little unrealistic. The spontaneous curation tour was definitely quite a treat in that regard, however.
Whether this new album is a double or not, it does feel like we are in for 12 new songs at a minimum. How great! The big question, then, is which songs get cut out of the current rotation to make room for the 6 or 7 new album tracks each night? I think this is where we will truly see how they felt about circuital. Certainly, wonderful is a lock to hang around. But will victory dance stay when they will have a new intro type song to play with? Jim seems to really like circuital (the track), so i think that stays. Black metal and outta my system disappeared during the americana tour, but its hard to say whether that was because they were over the songs or just didnt think they fit with the tour. I hope like hell its the former. You wanna freak out never really made it on the setlists very often even on the album tour. That leaves The day is coming, Slow, and Movin Away. Its just my intuition but i dont think that any of these songs either disappear or are heavily incorporated on a nightly basis. Sort of like how they have been uitilized so far, i think we see them sprinkled in here and there. I would love it if slow became more of a stalwart but its such a different tempo that it doesnt really fit anywhere in a setlist. Still, when the guitar wails i think everyone falls in love. From a sheer power perspective, slow and victory dance are sonically massive songs, especially when they attach the extended jam onto vd.
What about other albums? That could be a lengthy debate but i think it's time to shelve songs like off the record, golden, im amazed...maybe even one big holiday? Lets not stop here though, i think in creating a longer album they would finally have the material to go to more of a phish type of setlist pattern with very few repeats from one night to the next. I realize that they are a rock band before they are a jam band but how long can they continue witht the current template? I dont think we will see them go to phish's format of two setlists a night, 3 hours a night. They still tour way too much for that to be realistic. But i do think that they now have the songs and the right kind of fans, those that travel to see them, to think more globally than just night to night. If they do go this route, fans ljke me would have no problem going to 5 to 10 stops on the tour. If not, i suppose ill hit two or three stops and wait until a three night run pops up later on. I realize that what i want and what they want could be completely different, though, i just hope they are challenging themselves and believe in what they are doing.. I can live with whatever spawns from that.

I would be happy to hear Wonderful, Victory Dance, or Slow Slow Tune occasionally on the sets. But I'm hoping they drop most of Circuital this next tour instead of older songs. I'm thinking songs from Evil Urges will become more of a rarity than they already are. It just depends what sort of vibe the new album brings.
Nice insight Stevie, it makes me wonder what they will do. I am just really happy they did the Spontaneous curation series, I feel like they saw what they fans wanted and really started to play a mix of everything rather than just recent stuff.
Slow Tune is a song I think they should and will keep around
I expect Circuital and Wonderful to be the ones we hear the most moving forward
I think they may hold on to Black Metal and Day Is Coming (occasionally)
I'd be ok if they gave the others a rest for a tour or two.
I hope Victory Dance sticks around for their encores
I don't know how to process that. "most excited" :cheesy:

I guess there are 3 or 4 ways they could do it.
1. Just release it as a double album (like The Beatles' White Album or ELO's Out Of The Blue or Pink Floyd's The Wall...and several other bands who put out double albums back in the day).
2. Split them up into 2 separate albums (like Guns 'n' Roses' Use Your Illusion I & II, which were released at the same time...if I remember correctly, or System Of A Down's Mezmerize & Hypnotize, which came out 6 months apart. Those 2 S.O.A.D. albums had special fold-out cardboard CD cases that could be slipped together into 1 double sized case.)
3. Just release 1 long album of new material and offer the remaining songs as bonuses for Roll Call members or as a special Record Store Day EP.
4. Just release 1 of the albums now, and save the other material for the next album.
I'm just glad they are feeling so positive about the material they have been recording.
I vote don't save the material for a later release. Put them out close to one another when the songs are still relevant to the band. Also, it doesn't make much sense to release them six months apart. Wouldn't that make them do two tours? One to promote the first album, and one to promote the second?
A double album these days would be something very special. I hope they do it!

I think other things got in the way first off the americanarama tour and spanish gold also... yes every band is really excited about the material but as they should be. it's their baby. I'd be surprised if it wasn't something announced before the end of this year.
Just my .02 but if the band wasn't excited about the record then they shouldn't release it at all since it probably won't have their true expressions on it. I know a lot of bands change throughout the course of their careers and just because something isn't exactly the style an old fan likes, doesn't mean that the band shouldn't go in that direction, so as long as the band itself likes what it is doing. That in the end should be all that matters. Kind of like that do what you love attitude that really only works for some people in a perfect world.
I really hope to see some more info come out about this after the SG tour finishes up as it seems like they have been pretty tight lipped about it for the most part.
Need. New. Jacket.
nikko i feel you.. i am suprised that the band has not released more small tidbits of info... something.. anything.. to pacify those of us eagerly waiting to see what direction these new songs will take the band.. instead we get rhetorical questions about One Big Holiday in Mexico like "mmj.. beach.. could it get any better than that?"
this is the longest time i've been in the dark about mmj goings on's in my 10+ years of fandom
If they do do a double album i wouldn't mind if they did something like the Foo Fighters did for In Your Honor. Half rock, half acoustic. That could work out pretty well i think.
Think we are getting close to some details? I'm wondering if an early 2015 release is considered January-February or March-May.
I've spoken to Patrick, Kevin Ratterman, and Ben Sollee. All have said they're still recording and haven't been doing so consistently due to side projects and enjoying the hiatus. Seems like a lot of new material to work with, but no details as to what, when, where, etc.

Thanks for the details Yac. Sounds like we might be looking at an early summer release, but maybe OBH will bring them together sooner than later, who knows!
kudos to them for getting some well deserved down time. the next tour will be a freight train of awesome.
A little while back Portugal. The Man released the album The Satanic Satanist. I really like that album. Shortly after they released the Majestic Majesty - which was an all acoustic version of the regular album.
While I don't think that's what is going to happen here....how awesome would it be to get an all acoustic second album?
Or even better....take some of their classics from other albums and put out an acoustic mix/EP. I love stripped down versions of songs....sometimes more than the studio effort.

While I would welcome acoustic ANYTHING when it comes to this band, i don't think that that is something that Jim would ever want to do. It's too easy. Or maybe there is a better word than easy. Then you have what Band of Horses just did, very similar but taking their hits and making an acoustic tour/album out of it. The difference here is that it was done not shortly after their last album but around the time that they probably should have been working on something new. There, it seems maybe they are running out of inspiration.. While i recognize that this may be somewhat of a harsh judgment on both bands, i'm only viewing this through the lens of what Jim has done in the past and the kind of artist that i perceive him to be. Something similar to either of those two projects would clash with that perception (that is in my head). Part of that perception is the idea that he creates just as much if not more for the experience of self expression and the feeling of creating something than he does for obtaining a finished product (which i also perceive to be a pretty high drive when you look at his catalog). When you combine that with the fact that he doesn't come off as a guy who is particularly concerned about fame and money, it would seem that he would view those types of projects as a stagnation of sorts. A failure to move forward and experience something new. Just my opinion though.. As you can tell i hold the man in pretty high regard. I may be the only one around here that does so it's okay if you disagree :drum:
you make a great point.
so quiet around here these days. I'm actually taking a break from MMJ "for the most part" until we get some news.
Seems a good time to rest the ears as i'm sure it will be full swing within 4-6 months
Looking forward so much for this album..........well the new Basement Tapes will have to ease the pain till the new album will finally be there.
Double Album would be a dream come true and that might be a possibility.
When you think off what the band and its members have done over the last few years so many life show and side projects so many new influences and ideas that have to had an affect on the band as a whole. Also they have played with so many musical legends over the last few years like no other band I can think of e.g. Bob Dylan, Bob Weir, Roger Waters (Love for Levon)

Good call. I'm sure you had a good ride home. And you gave yourself a one day break. I think that Rolling Stone blurb is our news..... waiting until 2015 and if we get a single in late 2014 that would be nice.

I love this idea! Acoustic Citsuoca is absolutely brilliant. Probably from start to finish my favorite thing MMJ has done.
Was just listening "Carried Away" on OBH and I was wondering if Carl will sing on the new album.

No kidding! just a tidbit to give us hope!
I was hoping for some Portchester news this week but I think my hopes are all but crushed at this point.

I will check on this - doubtful, but that week is still open
Justin - who is your source? The band of the venue?
surely we can't be that far away from hearing something... anything :undecided:
