Title: Seeking post OBH advice
Post by: Bulldog on Oct 05, 2014, 08:19 PM
All,

I'm looking for input on where to stay after the shows. We have two couples traveling down and have it narrowed down to Tulum (thanks in no small part to this forum) and Akumal.

Are the bugs as bad in Tulum as I hear they are?

Does anyone have experience staying in Akumal?

I have a dream of sitting on a beach at night and either listening to someone strumming on a guitar in a local bar or starring up at the stars and listening to last years show on a speaker.....

Any advise or input would be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with Akumal, but we LOVE Tulum. We will be going back to Tulum after the shows on Wed until Sunday. We haven't booked a place yet, but will soon. This will be our 4th time in Tulum including the fact that's where we got married. It's very rustic and personal. Love the beaches and the people. I don't have any big concerns about the bugs. They exist, but I wouldn't even come close to considering them a problem. Last year we stayed at the OM Resort and wish we could stay there this year, but it already fully booked. It's very small with only 6 or 7 rooms.

Let's def make plans. Maybe we can plan to go to the ruins at the same time. They have an AWESOME beach below the cliffs.

I believe Tulum is the only Mayan City that was right on the Ocean. Small compared to the other ruins, but the location is unbelievable.

If you feel like going big, we loved the Mezzanine, it's one of the closest places to the Mayan Ruins, on the less busy section of the strip of hotels on the beach.  Great thai restaurant on site and the bar makes amazing cocktails.

Screw it, we locked down a couple rooms in Tulum.

We are hoping to look around at a number of different beach areas and more importantly restaurants.

Heres the link if anyones interested, dosent have quite the food as some of the other places, but the price is nice and I like the semi secluded beach area.

Isn't that an adults only resort?

it's possible.  We stayed there the last two nights or our honeymoon.  I don't recall seeing kids there, but I honestly cannot remember.

we'll be staying here for a few nights after OBH...

it's not on the beach, it's pretty much in the 'pueblo' on the road that goes between the pueblo and the beach area.  We stayed here several nights on our honeymoon and absolutely fell in love with the little place.  Just four rooms, and very affordable, yet very cool, nice and fun.  They have free cruiser bikes that you can just hop on and peddle to the beach.  Cannot wait!

That's cool. Looks very posh. We're looking to stay right on the beach. If we don't go back to the Om, we'll look at the piedra that Bulldog posted. With 6 kids between our two families traveling together, it helps us tremendously to be able to walk out our door to the beach.

I wouldn't call it posh, it's very low key and casual, and extremely affordable.  I would very much prefer to stay in a sweet spot right on the water, but our budget says otherwise.

I just glanced at the site. I didn't explore the site to much. The site was very posh looking so I would guess they were smart and spent money to have a nice site which always helps. I haven't really compared prices as we're also on a budget, but from what I remember the Om was pretty affordable. Heck, we didn't even have electricity after 9pm. When it comes down to it, this won't be my decision. My wife we pull that trigger and then tell me it's done.

On a side note, just scored tickets to see War on Drugs tomorrow night. I've never seen them so I'm excited to do some reconnaissance.

Yes. I think when my wife looked the first time it was too early and it automatically said nothing was available. I just looked yesterday and found the same. We LOVED this place and the people were fantastic. We spent 4 nights there after OBH1. And the fact it is called OM is so appropriate for these trips.
