holy shit compound already sounds better than all of circuital

I like what I hear so far..Compound reminds me of "C'mon people we're making it now" (R Ashcroft) for some reason.
I just wanna say, from my expert critique of those two phone quality clips, the two new songs sound awesome. :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:
The new song Compund was incredible and certainly a highlight. The whole crowd was gooving to it just as much as during Phone
The names and song titles dont do it justice. The show was as good as any Jacket show Ive seen. Incredibly energy and new jams on old songs. The covers were incredibly fresh and special.
Night 1 was incredible. Night 2 was off the charts.

My wife was clowning me for looping that admittedly poor quality "Big D" video, but I have to say you can hear the melody and vibe and has gotten me quite excited for more. This coming from a guy who claimed he wasn't going to listen to a note of the new stuff until I got the vinyl. So much for that!

Oh man, what great set lists! I'm dying for more info on "only memories" bc of the great things everyone has said thus far. Seeing as it's the only new song without a clip does anyone want to elaborate a bit?--was it more slow or upbeat, heavy or acoustic, straightforward or spacey? Furthermore any standout carl or patrick parts? :drum: Thanks so much, cheers!!

I am so amped up for this year and hearing the new songs, new covers, couple Basement Tapes songs, and hopefully those rarities.

Early Memories was easily my favorite of the new songs as well. To me, it sounded more like a Jacket song than the others, and maybe that's why it resonated more with people. It had a very nice instrumental lead in in which I don't think Jim was even on the stage, just Carl and the guys laying down some notes and building things up somewhat in the realm of I Will Sing You Songs. Above and beyond that, i really don't remember it's all so blury.

What I got from this song was that it was a slow burning jam. Started off with Jim off stage and the boys just grooving a slow R&B jam. When he joined it remained at low tempo for most of it. There were several flashes of Pink Floyd (With Bo's parts especially). the end jam was awesome. But yeah, it really had a great Pink Floyd vibe to me.

what really excites me about them putting out so much new music, and doing all of these awesome covers, is that one day we can go to a show and not have a clue what to expect.... in the realm of a phish show today. that was also one of the great things about being at OBH.

Correct- Met him poolside earlier that day and he mentioned he was getting up there. Super nice person.
by the way... one of my favorite parts of Down on the Bottom, you can't see it as much on the video but i remember seeing it live... when the soloing starts breaking down Jim starts moving towards Carl so that he can jam with him and it seemed as if Taylor from Dawes thought Jim was coming to jam with him, he gets a little animated and excited but then realizes Jim is moving on so he kind of plays it off and hops around a little. Then of course, Jim circles back and makes sure that he spends some time by Taylor who is visibly happy as a clam.
Also... i know they come from two very different genres but i would totally be okay if Sylvan Esso ended up opening on the fall tour if only for the fact that we could possibly get more stuff like the PWW/Bob Marley mix.

Nice video and audio of Only Memories. I think this one will grow up nicely.
Somewhat unique in that Jim dominates on lead guitar the whole time with not much in the way of sharing with Carl as on most songs.
"Only Memories" wow! This is giving me the feels! I too am really hoping this stays close to the same length for the album.

Really excited for this album. Only Memories is already better than anything on Circuital. I hope the studio album stays close to the way these songs are live. Sometimes it's hard to go back to studio MMJ songs once you've heard the live version.
Do you think the single will be one of these three songs (Big D fits best as a single so far)? Or do you all think it will be something new?
surprised a longer clip of Big D hasn't surfaced

I agree i think the single will be Big D- I'm sure whichever song it is has already been decided but i wish they would take into consideration how well received Only Memories has been and make it the single!!
This is probably a stupid question but what was the first song released off of Circuital-- Holding on to Black Metal? I can't remember because i think i remember hearing the title track before the album release as well.

Weird, i didn't notice that at all at first! I also felt like the song was very unique when i first heard it though, at least compared to most jacket songs. I've been trying to put my finger on it.. i think what it is is this: Usually in a jacket song, you get great instrumentals but when Jim starts to sing they fade to the background and become maybe more generic, and then come back in strong as jim is finishing his verse. It's like the vocals and the instrumentals take turns being at the forefront. This song seems different. Perhaps it will sound different on the album but when i heard it live it felt like everything was more tightly woven together, and the instrumentals were more progressive instead of versed out into clean packages.
Whatever is going on, I love it. It sounds a little more grown up, and at the same time has such a youthful, willing to live in the moment kind of energy. The first song it reminded me of for some reason was "Captured" by Gov't Mule, the one that Jim applied his vocals to for their alternate guest musician version. Certainly, this has the makings of Jacket's seemingly once-per-album marathon track that can be modified and/or extended on a show by show basis.
It's going to be interesting to see how they merge these new songs in with the old in a live setting night after night. They sound so different in some key way from everything else that they have done before. Almost to the point of being comparable to the difference between It Still Moves and Z. At the same time, there is an undeniable familiarity. It's like they took off in a space ship to go explore another area of space, but made sure that they took some key elements from their previous two worlds in hopes of creating an entirely new planet with said elements and anything interesting that they found on the way. The album and tour cannot be announced soon enough.

It would be cool, but a single is a promotional tool and your average consumer has an attention span of about 3 minutes when it concerns music.. so it's either Big D or something very much like it. Inevitably, in 2 or 3 years, it will be the song we all have to sit through at some point in the first 7 songs while we are waiting for our next dose of Only Memories.
During the show when they played Only Memories it was just show stopping. Just everyone seemed to be mesmerized and blown away by it. You had the ocean breeze blowing in and the song was just amazing. It was an unforgettable moment!
I think it will be one they jam on in the future and make a lot longer but can't wait to hear the album version, just not sure it will beat that moment that night though.

It was definitely a very special moment. Imagine being there for the very first live Dondante or Steam Engine and no one outside the Band's circle had ever heard it before. The first two nights, the new songs felt like they could have been covers. This one was without a doubt theirs and it was a good move to save it for the last night.

I strongly disagree about compound fracture sounding like a cover. To these ears, they totally owned it, similar to a steam engine.

Definitely getting that 70s/80s feel. I admit i don't really know a lot about the music of that time but there are parts of Jim's vocals that remind me so much of those old songs i used to hear growing up, particularly the ones with female singers. Please don't hate me for saying this, but something about it reminds me of Minnie Ripperton - Lovin' You. And i like it.
I'll retire from the forum now.
Absolutely love Only Memories. Of all the new tunes they played at OBH2 this one stuck with me. Hope they extend that jam even more live. I really liked the last 2 albums but this may be my favorite album song since those from It Stills Moves and Z. After listening to it several times I can almost hear it transitioning into IWSYS...that would be 20-25 minutes of pure bliss.

Only Memories sounds a lot like a slowed down "I Cant tell you Why" by the Eagles.
I'm pretty pumped about the reviews Only Memories is getting but it just feels wrong allowing a low quality fan shot youtube video to be my first exposure to it. Am I wrong?

I was putting off watching the YouTube video of Only Memories, because I wanted my memory of that moment to remain until I heard the record or saw them sing it again live. I did however break down and watch it just once and I'm happy I did (thank you to whoever put that up by the way), it sparked my memory and I've been humming it ever since.
When they played Only Memories it seemed as though everyone had their own emotional response to it. If you weren't at OBH and you're able to wait to listen to it, I would recommend waiting. You will not regret it.
There is just something about a beautiful (instantly lovable) live song that you've never heard before, washing over you that's so alluring and something that is so rare.
