Post by: redpatoka on Feb 07, 2015, 09:45 AM
did anyone else hear the venue/country change rumour at obh2,heard cloud 9 say american fans complaining about travelling so far so changing obh3 to HARD ROCK DOMINICAN REPUBLIC,cloud 9 do same as obh for widespread panic at dominica....why change for the sake of an extra hour on flight or is it something else(sorry being cynical)...keep obh as it is

what I've heard is that HRDR is larger. And since OBH sold out, they need to expand. That sucks though, really. I would've thought if they were selling 2x as many tickets it would be cheaper.

I'd much rather have it in the DR and that doubles my flight distance. Now that I missed OBH2, I almost am glad. Simply because if I went, I would feel ripped for having my only 2 trips to the tropics be in a place that does not have a beach. Maybe I'm not like everyone else here, but the beach, and MMJ are the ONLY 2 reasons I would go to Riviera Maya, or DR. I want both if I am sinking $2K+ into it. I could go to Europe for 4 times longer on that $$

I looked up a random weekend in Feb at the Hard Rock DR and it was about $300 per person per night, which is similar to the cost at Hard Rock Playa.  I'm thinking the cost would be similar for an OBH in DR compared to Playa. However, if the costs were indeed $1500 per night that would be a deal breaker for me.

I'm with you. I was turned off at OBH1 because of the fake beach. Certainly didn't ruin my time, but the set up made it feel more like Florida than a foreign country.

i may have got it all wrong and i hope i have and prices may be simmilar i am just going on the prices for cloud 9's "panic en playa"featuring widespread panic at hrdr(google panic en playa widespread panic)prices started for that at $1500 pp per night

Which is $100 more without the loyalty discount so assume that still applies $100 more for real beach and casino would be well worth it

The cheapest room for Panic in La Playa was $1500 per person for 4 nights. The pricing structure seemed very similar to OBH. I'm hoping for Punta Cana 2016!

Being from So. Cal. I have spent very much time at the beach. The older I get, the less likely I will go in the water, because the Pacific ocean, north of SD is NOT warm. So to look at 75 degree water for 4 days, and the only way to touch it is in a fake lagoon, left me with vacation PTSD. I will spend 95% of my spare time in the ocean if that is the option. Pools are for apartment complexes, not the beach.

I so hope it's not at the DR. Not a fan. Went to panic last year and I don't like the venue as much as the hard rock in playa. Granted you'll get the stage on the actual beach, but to me that's not really better. The sound is not near as good. Multiple nights dancing in the sand is physically brutal. The people in the DR are not as nice and accommodating as in Mexico. The resort is HUGE!!!! If you're in one of the farther buildings, it is REALLY far. Granted, I ain't missing OBH3, but I am totally fine if they do one more year at the hard rock in playa and then change.

The food at the hard rock in the DR is DEFINITELY NOT better. The best meal there as well as in the riviera maya was at the hibachi grill (imo).

Any insiders have a feel for whether there's any truth to the 3-yr contract statement or if HRHDR truly a solid contender?

I just read that Hard Rock is building a resort in Playas del Coco, Costa Rica. I LOVE Costa Rica and have traveled there several times, and I LOVE MMJ, but if it is there, I may need to boycott. Costa Rica is no place for large, foreign owned, mega resorts. I cannot believe the government would allow this after the ones that were already built have such horrible environmental records and have diverged precious fresh water away from villagers so that rich gringos can take 20 minute showers several times a day. Also, Costa Rica is so rich in things to see and do, being sequestered in a resort that is a long drive to the really cool stuff would drive me crazy. I really hope they don't bring OBH there.

As a two time OBH, I have to say that the food sucked this year. 3 out of 6 of us got sick. We won't go back to Riviera Maya because the food was so bad. Also, we need a beach, not necessarily to have the stage on a beach, but to play in the surf all day. Spending $4,000 and not being able to play in the ocean all day really sucks. I hope they move it to Punta.  :drum:

Food is AWFUL at HR. I'm not even that picky and can get by eating plain rice for days (and I've done that very thing), but we opted to not wait in endless lines for dinner and loaded up on lunch and/or whatever was out in the courtyard during the shows. Would a veggie burger option at the poolside buffets kill them?

They really need to step up their game in that regard, and work on the food handling issues that made a few people miss shows this year.

There is ocean access just down the road either way away from the Hard Rock Riviera Maya.  Probably just a cheap taxi ride away.

We caught a cab from the lobby to Xpu-Ha for no more than $10. Beautiful beach, cool little beach bars, no problem. Another day we split a cab with some other folks for $60 to Tulum.

Taxi to near by beach at RM was super cheap.  Cost us like $2 per person, 8 people.  Beach and food were amazing.

Personally I would muh prefer RM for a 3rd year.  DR is so much further and flight cost are more than I want to pay for all that I am taking.

Rumors of the DR seem like no big seller.  Not great sound quality, dancing on sand sucks, drinks spilled on sand really sucks, DR folks not quite as friendly as MX folks.

I can certainly understand wanting someplace different, but there is still so much that I havent done in MX, it'll be like a whole new trip.  DR doesn't have quite as many things to do.

Plus MX is super cheap.  One piece of advice, don't do anything through the resort.  Look for alternative tours or catch a cab and see things on your own.  Will save you hundreds.

If they move to the DR this year, I'm sure there will be a lot of fans passing just on shear cost.

I'm a bit confused.

R/T tickets to Punta Cana seem to run $200 to $300 more than those to Cancun - certainly not a negligible increase, but I have to doubt that it would be a deal breaker for many folk.

A cursory Google search reveals a very similar set of available activities.

A 200-300 increase to an already expensive trip is definately felt by me.  I also have the spousal multiplier in effect and was considering bringing my daughter next year so that could tack on as much as $1000.

Not only is it more expensive to fly to DR, but it also adds a lot of extra travel time to your trip, half a day to a whole day if I'm not mistaken. Direct flights to Cancun from numerous US cities make it so much easier for many folks, especially those flying in from overseas. Drizzler talked to someone who works with Cloud 9 at the Anders Osbourne/North Mississippi Allstars show in Austin a few weeks ago and they said that they were pretty sure it would be back in the good ol' Riviera Maya!

Actually have to totally disagree on the available activities. Where can you climb a pyramid in DR or swim in a cenote? Are there even ruins of significance in DR? We've left the resort on every day while at both OBH's and haven't even scratched the surface on places to go and things to do. My buddy who also went to both OBH's is going to the DR this summer for a wedding and he said that there isn't nearly as much to do. Really glad to head back to Riviera Maya!

Could the potential change be attributed to the unrest and gang related crime in Mexico?  I heard the other day that there were travel warnings and cruise ships were avoiding certain ports.  Just a theory...
Title: Re: obh3 venue/country change rumours

Quintana Roo isn't one of the states in Mexico with a travel advisory.  Those travel warnings are mostly for the states that border the US, and Sinaloa.  Quintana Roo has a lot of tourist destinations, and the narco-violence has stayed clear of those locations for the most part.

No offense! The whole intent is to weed out the masses, get far away from reality in a beautiful, intimate, tropical place.  I'd be down for a mmj US festival, but not in place of obh.

I also was told no OBH this year, by someone as in the know as it gets.   Not trying to be a downer, just trying to let reality set in and avoid continued disappointment through wishful thinking.

If the rumors are true, this just sounds like a bad move.  After only two years, they are just starting to build momentum with it.  By taking a year off, they're going to essentially be starting over.

I'll be really bummed.  Like many people, we started planning our trip the second we left this year.

So The MMJ One Big Holiday facebook page posted a picture today of last year's Superbowl party.  I'd think if OBH3 plans were on hold, the facebook page would be relatively quiet.

Advertising the upcoming (15 weeks away) NFL season seems a strange to post either way.

I think you're reading too much into it. They're just keeping their page fresh. From what I've been told from within C9 I'm going to be saving travel money next year.

I dig what you're hearing GLUV - just trying to see a silver lining in these clouds.  Either way we'll know in a couple of weeks.

It was just such a cool experience that I'm holding out hope that OBH3 is revealed very soon.  I know the tea leaves are reading differently though.

I'm hoping there is an announcement either way. Would be psyched to channel my money towards some west coast dates.

I looked at the Hard Rock site for Riviera Maya, Cancun and Punta Cana and none had dates blocked in January or February. What does everyone think of that? Makes me think it's either not happening or they have picked an entirely different location or month.
..i checked the block booked dates for RM/DR and other hard rock resorts in carib and all dates are ok to book unlike for obh1/2 when dates where blocked early in the year, think that 2016 not happening

Went to Gov Ball last night solid set. The boys were giving autographs before the show and I spoke to Jim and he confirmed no OBH3 next year.

That is really a bummer. It was such a cool experience. I wonder if this was health related or if it didn't make sense financially somehow.

Imagine what OBH will be with TWO new albums of material from which they can create sets!  Sign me up for OBH 2017!

So it's officially official.  The emails just went out from Cloud 9.  No 2016 OBH.  :undecided:

It's official: no OBH3 in 2016. Bummer, but at least it's official and we can end the speculation (and maybe go see more shows on this tour!). Most of you probably got this from Cloud 9, but for the rest, here it is:

"In support of the band, the recent release of The Waterfall, and the world tour that is happening now, there isn't a One Big Holiday event planned for 2016."

"Hello Friends! We are very grateful to have had such epic times together with so many of you at One Big Holiday and we are looking forward to hopefully doing it again in 2017. Until then, we hope to see you out on the road this year! Stay tuned for upcoming announcements and see ya out on the open road!" - My Morning Jacket
