Are all conversations on this one paused until further notice?
I continue to vacillate between liking the song (a lot, occasionally) and wanting to forbid Jim from hanging out with Dan Wilson ever again.
My opinion is that I'd love to hear it.
Everyone has access to it (now), right?
I thought the YouTube posting was from the band, as the account was #MyMorningJacket. That, the Pono store posting, and the Ticketmaster link gave me the impression it was an official release. Therefore, I felt no guilt posting it here and on Facebook. I don't think anyone was initially treating this as a leak, though it seemed like another communication breakdown.
I have come to like Big Decisions quite a bit. Its borrowing from a lot of what I like about MMJ and yet accessible to the masses. I don't need to overanalyze the lyrics or fret about what this means for the rest of the album. Its a good song.
I don't know of any current way to access the song. I'd expect something official this week

Maybe. I've said this elsewhere. $200, no single-day options, w/"free" camping when its only 90 min. away, is not ideal. I could do 2 MMJ headlining shows for that, though that wouldn't cover travel expenses. We'll see... :undecided:

I'd come up for that with you JY but we have a family beach vacation that weekend.
Looks like they have a new iTunes page, that's a start I suppose. Seems to be a new press photo. The boys are lookin' good!

did you also see they now offer an MMJ book with lyrics and tabs?
The book is the e-dition of the Hal Leonard book from 2010, but it is nice to know that it is there!
Forget what I said earlier about this song. It's really starting to grow on me, and I could not be more excited for the album!
Just had my very first listen of Big Decisions and I immediately love it! I'm a little surprised it didn't take a few plays to grow on me. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album in May!
finally heard it this morning, liked it a lot.
Excited to be back on the boards after a long time. Loving the new track and miss you dudes.
Big Decisions is glorious. Honestly thought it was great right away. Song is pretty damn catchy, Jim's voice sounds amazing, love the production and the whole band sounds phenomenal.
I cannot wait to hear what the rest of The Waterfall sounds like. Those couple of longer tracks have me really excited. It's been too long. Feels great to be listening to new music by them again.
I like it. Some people don't like it when our favorite band(s) that aren't your typical pop type acts go pop, but if it's done well, I actually like it, and I feel like this is done well. Now, if it were a full album of poppy songs, I'd probably be disappointed, but I like the song a lot.
There are so many parts of the song that I really like, but Jim really kind of loses me around the time when he starts saying "well i can't.." each time, there's such a big build up with the "what do you want me to do"s and then it just sort of goes nowhere. To add, i'm not a fan of the way it was mixed. Jim's vocals sound like they have only one dimension in a three dimensional musical world. Could just be the upload. I do know one thing.. i'm a huge fan of Compound Fracture and Only Memories after hearing them in Mexico, so i'm not really worried about the album as a whole. It's just weird to me now after hearing it 10 plus times why they would choose this one as a single. To me this is more along the lines of a Two Halves or You Wanna Freak Out than a Circuital or an I'm Amazed.
Perhaps they will find a way to make this thing work really well live. Either way, still excited for the album and the tour.
really enjoying it
I think it will be a lot of fun live

My feelings exactly. It seems more people liked "Only Memories" the best, but for me it went Compound>Memories>Big D.

I couldn't disagree more. From the first time I heard it(outside of OBH) I liked more than the large majority of the past 2 albums. Certainly better than Im amazed or circuital. Can't wait to listen to the rest of the album, which I expect to be the best since Z.
Just one mans opinion 👍

Even though I like the song, I wish it would go somewhere. Right before the end, the best few seconds of the song happen (the horns etc.), but then it just ends.
I know it is too early to analyze the lyrics but I am wondering if the inspiration for Big D has any ties to the "who makes my decisions" line from Smokin'. Just a thought.
After about 25 listens, this song kicks ass. I've been humming it all day. Love those pop sensibilities! Call me a trout, because I'm HOOKED, baby!
The forecast this summer calls for an 100% chance I groove hard to this at every show.
After listening all day... Just got me more excited for the album!!! If this song, and the other live videos from OBH2, are any indication , this album will exceed all expectations.
Side note: friends again comes on right after big decisions on my iPod, and it would have fit nicely on this album. I can see how it didn't on Circuital, but it would have been a sweet addition to this one. I am probably just bias, cause I love that fucking song and want it to have its justice, but maybe better off as a hidden GEM like Oxen.
Happy listening... And getting us through the next two months :cheesy:

Unfortunately no. That was indeed very misleading. I spent $122.73 for a few records and you have to spend another $1.29 for the first track release. Kind of bullshit. Who would pre-order a digital release anyway?? That's how you get the instant download I believe.
So, you only get the instant download if you pre-order from iTunes, Amazon, or Google Play? Not if you pre-order from the MMJ store? That's weak sauce, if true.

Here's what I received from Firebrand:
Hi Mike - Apologies for any confusion. Unfortunately the instant download of 'Big Decisions' is only available when purchasing the album from a digital platform, such as iTunes.
If you have any questions on the preorder, please let us know.
Cheers,
Firebrand
Even though the store says "Pre-order today and download "Big Decisions".
I still have only heard it on this website.
That's silly. They assume people who buy physical media don't own computers?
With all of the snow and sleet and ice that hit us here in Wisconsin yesterday, I rode in to work with my girlfriend. She offered me her car to go back home, as long as I was willing to pick her up later that evening. I declined, and decided to take the bus as far north as I could, and then walk the remaining three miles to her place. I hit play on "The Tennessee Fire" on my iPhone, and started to make my way through the sludge. I entrusted my feet to keeping me on the path and upright, and allowed my mind to flirt with the looming tour and album drop. "The Tennessee Fire" ended up timing out perfectly, and the instrumental track began to fade as I walked up the driveway. As my hand reached out to unlock the outer doors, I wondered to myself "What follows this album in my iTunes collection?" Sure enough, it was "Big Decisions." It wasn't nearly as jarring as I would have guessed had you asked me before this all happened. Far from it, in fact. The relationship between the two was palpable, and more than a little moving.
I'm taking this experience as a sign... Big Decisions can definitely stand on its own merits, but it is going to be a part of something bigger. I don't think the inclusion of the puzzle in the deluxe package was a whim. We are in for something wholly unique, and uniquely whole.

Better watch them puzzles, Woldie. The Waterfall is the ever flowing subconscious...if you get mired in the mind, you'll drown. As Bruce Lee says "Be the water, my friend."

Hopefully that's something they play with live. Like add an extended jam or rock out moment at that point.

I love Big D, but every time I listen to it I just wish it will be longer.
Haha glad I'm not the only one that heard sexy. That part of the song is impossible to understand.
Also heard sweet and sexy, and also felt it was very unlike Jim. Highly relieved to know that it's 'sincere' for some reason.
The song is growing on me a little bit but man... I just cant get past certain parts that to me just feel sort of mailed in. I dont mean to be negative im just trying to explain myself.
I am however convinced that this could grow to become a good live track, and if it doesnt and i continue to dislike it then its only 3.5 minutes out of 75+

Agreed!
Jim's comments about finally accepting things and putting his spirituality into action have me thinking. He has in the past talked about being confused about life in general quite a bit and how that has been a huge theme in his work. At first glance or listen the lyrics in Big D come across as being spoken from him towards someone he looks out for, possibly a significant other in the past or present. But i now wonder if maybe the lyrics are from the standpoint of whichever god or whatever that he believes in being directed at him and how he has come to better understand this dynamic, feeling that he must now rely on himself for action and not another entity. There are many possibilities of course, would like to hear another interpretation.
For anyone who doubts the awesomeness of this song, just picture this LIVE, where Carl kicks the fucking shit out of EVERYTHING starting at about 2:15
Also, I just realized I've had this song on repeat all night. Up to 88 listens already. Goddamn. I've been in MMJ withdrawal for a LONG TIME and am in the midst of a borderline unhealthy bender right now.
I like this song a lot, thought it was ok at OBH. But,they managed to work some pedal steel in there, which I love. No band I know of can incorporate steel like these guys. It shouldn't work in songs like this, OOMS, etc, yet it always does.

Completely agree about the pedal. They somehow managed to turn a sound that was usually a signal for old boring vanilla country music into something that is heartfelt and psychedelic all at the same time.
This song really encapsulates how I feel getting dressed in the morning...like "ughhh...these big decisions..." So maybe it's about Jim's lady friend trying to get him to change the brownfit. And he performed it at OBH in his new robe to show her that she was right.
Behind every great man is a great woman, trying to get him to change his clothes.

i was talking to mynameiscurt last night and he had a very similar interpretation.
When I am confused about something, I always tell myself "You are one perspective away from unlocking the mystery..." It's kind of a way to keep myself open to all avenues of experience. This is one such instance. I feel like the notion that the song/story is being sung/told from the higher power perspective...makes it not only more digestable...it changes the whole tone of the song. It makes it more empathetic...for some reason, coming from the perspective of a lover, it feels condescending. Like Positively 4th Street...but coming from a divine source, it is empowering. But why is this? And I think it comes down to the nature of love itself. That human love is limited. That by not making the "big decisions", the lover is almost shirking responsibility...but in the divine light, it is like realizing the power of free will...but does the creator not speak through his creation? Is this change in tone not a reflection of my own preference for the divine which is not external, but within me/my grasp?
I gotta say "om" for a while. The ol' mind is taking over...
If the speaker is a person, a lover, a friend, then that speaker is human and by definition not perfect. So criticism probably sounds condescending or offputting when it comes from a source that has their own issues to work out. When it comes from the devine, or within, maybe its seen more as an eternal truth or fact, and how do you argue against that? However, Ive been listening more and i think maybe i was wrong before. The lines "dont really feel like faking it again tonight," and the follow up "dont wanna act like everything is alright" (may have butchered those, on phone), those clearly come from a human entity. So im thinking now this could be a struggle with himself. The one side of him urging the other to get it together.

That's what I was thinking when I first heard it. Probably because I've had the exact same internal struggle with myself for way too long.

Those are such good points...and that internal struggle is interesting in light of the "always think twice", when the speaker seems caught in his own duality...trapped in " feeling" and "faking it"...
I'm STILL getting breakthroughs from songs...today I was reading "The Power of Now" and it said: "This is the esoteric meaning of the ancient art of alchemy: the transmutation of base metal into gold, of suffering into consciousness..." And it was just Black Metal into 'radiate the gold"...
I'll never figure it out, but get glimpses in the flow...
Keep up the insights, guys. It really is beautiful. I feel like these conversations make the music a living, breathing thing...
what if, for the sake of argument, we assume that the song is about two people...
If a person says they "don't really feel like faking it tonight", that would imply that there are indeed times where they ARE faking it...which would justify the other character's second guessing...but second guessing implies " being of two minds", which is another way of saying a person caught in the trap of duality...so this character is not in the "right" either.
So is it possible that this is indeed, as hinted at, a conversation between one's higher and lower selves? It is often said that when a person is of two minds, that their decisions are not their own...that they are always controlled by the ego...incapable of rational decision making...prone to faking it...but would the highee self be so caustic? So accusatory? Not likely. It seems like this is the ego, talking down to the sweet, sincere self supposedly ruled by fear. The ego maintains its foothold by complimenting and then denegrating. The "do it" is like a dare...like an abusive lover who knows he won't be left...such is the subversive power of the mind.
"He who hesitates is lost"
My boss left us with this quote at the end of a meeting today and it made me think of Big D.
Some other definitions I found interesting are below:
"Swift and resolute action leads to success; self-doubt is a prelude to disaster."
"A person who spends too much time deliberating about what to do loses the chance to act altogether."
Also, just a side note on MamaKel's two selves, I have always felt like the chorus of Bermuda Highway is between two selves, the artistic and creative self asking the "by the book" self not to carve him/her out and let their silly dreams to fall. Maybe that is obvious but just thought I'd throw that in there.

Jesus, dude. It's like you just cut through my daily inner dialogue. I never thought of Bermuda Highway quite like that...but will from now on...I had an experience with At Dawn that way. It actually seems a pretty common theme. I think what I admire or seek, is what I presume to lack. Thank you for those insights...they are really profound.

I've listened to Big Decisions so many times already even my kids know the words.
My kids are loving it!!!
And for all of us that thought it was "sexy"....
Yesterday in the car we are listening to it, and my 4 yr old is cracking up in the back seat.
I say Harrison what's so funny?
He looks at me and says, dad jimmy keeps saying sexy!!
Gotta love it!
This is so cute!!! I love that he calls him " Jimmy" just like Levon Helm...my little one always opens his mouth real wide and giggles when we're listening to live shows and Jim says something like "It is FUCk-ING beautiful out here"... It makes me appreciate the hilarity of the word fuck so much more...
Hahahaha
Thats amazing !!!!!
And yes... Him and my 8yr old have been brainwashed since birth, and my 16yr old since he was 6.
They are so pumped!!! This summer they will not be left behind and get to go to their first Jacket show! :cheesy:
Us too! Which ones are you guys going to?!
Speaking of brainwashing, I have videos of the little one's voice singing through the baby monitor "Howding on to bwack metaw...bwack metaw!!!" I don't know if there's a kid jacket thread, but I think we should start a Roll Call Small club...
I think you are doing a fantastic job parenting

They need to get some kiddo shirts for the youngins. Not a whole lot out there. Most are individually made, if any. Would love to see a jacket onesy

Can we make this happen? I feel like there are such beautiful Muppet like possibilities for all those minigeetahs
I'm taking my 3 year old to RR for his first jacket show. We plan on altering a women's small to fit him. I would like to see someone who has pull make mention to the bands team and see if we can. Maybe Johnny Yac can make a mention?

Where there's a will, there's a way...you got all the pull you need, my friend.

That's awesome!
They have the same shirt!!! (They had them on sale on one of the tours, and never saw them again)
Going to Camden and Meriwether.
Since we're showing kid pics, here's Jim at Newport 2010 with my daughter, Maddie, and niece, Regan. Both age 5 at the time.

I passed on the request for kid-size merch to management. We'll see where that goes...
Definitely look at merch tables during the tour. They often have things not available online.
Thanks Johnny. Great Pic.
lyrics?
This 3rd line is not included below, comes in after "...twice."
And I'm gettin' so tired tryin' to always be nice.

I got into the band in 03 and marveled at how I loved every song they released until evil urges came out. I have liked some songs since but their new stuff just doesn't do it for me. I keep waiting for new songs and I was listening to this when it was forty seconds long on YouTube but it still hasn't happened for me. If you love this song more power to you but I just don't and it makes me sad. I still love and always will love this band and I am sorry if this bums you guys out but I gotta talk about it with somebody and all my friends are tired of hearing about mmj so here I am.
As long as one is under the pretext that a "big decision" must be made, will the waterfall ever stop? It either is, or is not...there is no big decision.
From one of the people who attended the listening party, regarding the lyrics to "The Waterfall (In it's Infancy)":
I stop the waterfall by finally feeling / I stop the waterfall by just believing / I gotta stop the waterfall.
That is the most beautiful mantra ever...
Reminds me of Jim talking about being in "the zone," and how he strives to "be in the zone as much as possible."

i strongly disagree about evil urges.......i think it's an incredible album, with songs that stand with the group's best.
but i was VERY disappointed with most of circuital, and big d hasn't done much for me yet.
to me, it felt like the first 5 albums were filled with songs that were programmed into jim's dna at birth, beautiful, inspired tunes that were in him all along and needed to come out. circuital felt more like someone saying to himself, "well, i'm a songwriter, guess i need to write some songs." so far, big d feels the same to me. not terrible, but not up to the lofty standards set by his earlier work.
even the greatest have their dry spells. i'll use a couple of my all-time favorites as examples. paul mccartney is the most successful songwriter ever, but from the early 80's on it was hit or miss, mostly miss. now into his 70's, i think his last few albums are absolutely fantastic. pete townshend wrote some of rock's most brilliant, powerful songs. now even he will admit he hasn't been able to write a great song for a long, long time. it just can't be forced. it's either in you, or it's not, imo.
i am optimistic that the rest of the waterfall will show jim is back to his songwriting best. guess i'll find out monday night! :cheesy:
I understand where you are coming from. The best way I can put it is that some of their songs are just absolutely magical in a powerful way. Dondante is a transcendent beast. I feel like their earlier albums were more stacked with these types of songs, so that feeling stayed with you over the course of the entire album.
Now take Circuital for example - I like almost every song on that album, but there are really only two that stand out in my mind as hitting that level of sheer epic amazingness. The rest of the songs to me are just like catchy fun songs. I don't think it's really fair to expect someone to hit that level of greatness with every release, but the flip side to that would be that I also think it's perfectly human that as fans who know what he's capable of we hope for that every time.
Which all leads to how to me the only real disappointment is how long we have to wait between output from them. Highly Suspicious is a song from them that I don't like very much. I see how it can be enjoyable to people but it just doesn't work for me. I only bring this up to say that I would still think it was awesome if they did an entire album of songs in that crazy style and I would definitely listen to it and give it a chance, but I have to admit I would be bummed out knowing that if at the end of the day I still wasn't crazy about it, it would be another four years before we heard anything else.

Well good thing they have another album dropping in Spring of 2016 as well as a Jim James solo record.
Should someone make a thread about the leak to keep info contained so that people don't read things they are trying to avoid?

Every time anyone has tried to, it gets deleted...

Figured it had been mentioned but I wasn't on here over the weekend. Well hopefully someone can set something up that sticks
