Title: THE DETROIT DOUBLE WHAMMY
Post by: oistheone on Mar 03, 2015, 11:00 PM
Nothing beats a Detroit double-down! I'll take any excuse I can get to return to this wonderfully underrated city.

These shows are in a great venue, directly after Bonnaroo and the band likely has days off both before and after. Seems like a recipe for something special!

Can't wait for this! Who else is in for a Motown throwdown?!?!

Whoooooo!

I'll be there! I'm moving to Detroit in May or June so this is unbelievable to me! I thought they'd be doing 1 show at DTE or Rochester in like August, but TWO shows in the city right after I move? I am so excited.

And thanks for calling Detroit underrated. Great city.

It's a beautiful part of the city, I absolutely love it. If you need any advice or have some questions feel free to ask, I'd be glad to help.

Thanks man! We should be in the city by June. We should meet up for the shows! Also - our primary apartment right now is Pasadena Towers, on Jefferson 4 blocks north of downtown. Any thoughts/suggestions on that?

Where you at Detroiters?

Never been to Detroit before and I booked a room in an old mansion on airbnb and have GA for both nights.  I'm also flying solo at this point so prepare to meet me internet friends for what will surely be two magical nights of music.

So pumped. I decided this year to move away from my hometown (Kalamazoo) to downtown Detroit. So fitting that the lead single is called Big Decisions and that they're playing two shows just 5 minutes away from my new apartment. The cherry on top of a big year for me.  :drum:

Looks like I'm not going to be making it to the big D now.  I've got a two day GA pass at will call if someone wants to go.  The ground control guy said I'd have to copy my ID and write a letter for someone else to pick them up that night.  Let me know

Anyone trying to request anything for spontaneous curation?
Title: Re: THE DETROIT DOUBLE WHAMMY
Post by: oistheone on Jun 05, 2015, 11:37 AM
I have been thinking about what I'll attempt to Spontaneously Curate for these shows, and after eliminating the impossible (Friends Again), I think I'll settle on Twilight. This song has escaped me for the last five years. NOT ANYMORE!!!

Why is Friends Again impossible?
Title: Re: THE DETROIT DOUBLE WHAMMY
Post by: oistheone on Jun 05, 2015, 12:45 PM
They haven't played it in five years and have shown absolutely no signs of ever removing it from the doghouse. I've requested it every single time I've had the chance and even asked Patrick why it never gets played. He said one doesn't know why some songs get in the doghouse, but once they're there, sometimes it can be hard to escape. I've pretty much given up hope.

We will be at both shows (as well as Raleigh, Charlotte, and Vegas).

Does anyone know door times?  The site says 7pm for the show and indicates doors are generally an hour earlier.  Does that put Roll Call early entry at 5:45 or 6:45???

So, I've only been to the Fillmore once. It was a few years ago and I don't really remember anything. I know it's tiered in different sections of GA, but are there seats on the floor, with a pit in front? Or is it all just floor?

Also, I'm not in Roll Call or anything so how does that work? Fan club members get in like 30 minutes early right? So you pretty much have to be in Roll Call to get super close?
Title: Re: THE DETROIT DOUBLE WHAMMY
Post by: Tutofqueens on Jun 12, 2015, 04:36 PM
It's a great venue. No seats or pit – all floor. I've had some of my best concert experiences in the first row of the second tier of GA, just a couple steps up from the main floor and the sound is better. Still super close, yet not as crowded. Plus, quicker access to the bar! Highly recommended.

Thanks! Will they have different wristbands for different sections or what? Just wondering how they keep people sectioned correctly. I'll be on the upper balcony Tuesday, and floor Wednesday. Is it even possible for a non-Roll Call member to get up front?

I walked to the box office (2.5 miles).  Box office opens at Noon.  Early entry indicates tix can be picked up at the box office.  BUT, tickets won't get there until after 3pm.......

Also, for those coming in from downtown, the venue is on Woodward Ave.  It is a massive eight lane road, but it is undergoing a massive reconstruction project.  Don't come in via Woodward.  Approach the venue from the west (lots of surface parking there anyway).

See y'all later.

If Chicago is any indication, Hiss Golden Messenger plays for 1/2 hour, and MMJ hits the stage 30-35 minutes after them. MMJ hit the stage between 8:30-8:35 every night.

Firsst off Hiss Golden Messenger is fucking good. Never listened to them much but that's definitely going to change. Been listening to them since the show

MMJ was sick as always, let's see. I don't remember much, I'd have to see the Setlists to remember everything. Believe is a great opener.. As far as other Waterfall material, didn't like Tropics too much. In Its Infancy was a good one. Only Memories Remain had a beautiful beautiful lead out jam, got a bit trippy. Speaking of trippy/amazing in general, the jam out of STEAM ENGINE. WOOO, that was fire. I'd say the whole song was the highlight of the night for me.

What else played.. First Light, Lowdown, What a Wonderful Man, Golden, Off the Record, I'm Amazed, It Beats For You. Believe/Tropics/Infancy/Memories/Steam Engine has been mentioned, was Phone Went West before the encore? This is in no particular order, someone could organize if they remember it better. I'm probably missing a few

Encore was Hopefully, Victory Dance, Touch Part 2, Gideon, Mahgeetah, I think this may be the right order.

I felt that, and I'm not saying this in a bad way because I was one of these people once and everybody has been, a lot of the crowd were casual music listeners who didn't know MMJ too well. Some people were totally into it, quite a few weren't at all. I'm used to jam band shows where everybody knows every word of every song and thus is extremely into the show, so this was a bit of a different scene. I know some people went home today as newly discovered MMJ fans so that's great

I'm not saying this in a bad way either but MMJ isn't a jam band, hence the different scene. That, and I think the BIG buildup to "The Waterfall"LP, has brought out a lot of curious people/casual listeners. The band themselves have actively avoided being pigeon holed with the "jam band" moniker. Although they do have followers and people who know every word of ALMOST every song...
I don't even think Jim knows what he's singing half the time :)
Hope you had a good show

Nor do I expect a jammy show (though Steam Engine and a few others were jammy with extra sauce), I just noticed more casual listeners who weren't really in the MMJ scene at all and seemed to be there to talk over the music. But I digress. Music was fantastic. Gotta drive up to the UP tomorrow so can't see night 2. Judging by the songs not played it's gonna be tight

I saw the same type of crowd response in Cleveland. There were a lot of people there that just stood there, no dancing or singing, as if they had just wandered into the theater not knowing what to expect. It was such a different vibe then the Athens show where the venue was filled with super fans from top to bottom. I guess the new exposure is a good thing, but it makes for a very different live experience.

The first half of the set was a bit blurry for me, but I'm 99% sure the set ended like...

Steam Engine
Only Memories Remain
Off the Record
Phone Went West
--
Hopefully (Jim solo)
Victory Dance
Gideon
Touch Me Part 2
Mahgeetah

And yeah the crowd was super boring unfortunately.
Title: Re: THE DETROIT DOUBLE WHAMMY

This was only my third show, and first in four years. First time seeing them indoors. My god. Like I said the crowd was really lame, at least on the balcony. There was hardly anyone up there and EVERYONE was sitting down the whole show. Didn't let it discourage me too much though. First half of the show had very little jamming - I remember Lowdown was super short and crunchy.

The second half just blew the roof off though. Steam Engine went straight into Only Memories, it was beautiful. And the encore was insane. Never thought I'd get Hopefully, and Victory Dance will always be one of my favorite. I thought Gideon was gonna close. Then I thought for sure Touch Me was gonna close. Then Jim picks the guitar back up at the end, and starts noodlin around before Good Intentions. Then "okay, cool" STRAIGHT into that crunch Mahgeetah riff. So great, can't wait for tonight.

Was anybody in the pit for the MMJ/Wilco/Dylan show a couple years ago? There were around 30 people in the pit definitely there for MMJ and Jim James was basically playing to us as we were all raging, it was fucking awesome. When you've got a high energy crowd, there's an energy that's gonna get absorbed by the band and they're gonna feed it back to us.

I was back at the seats for that show and definitely noticed the higher energy from Jim from the start. I felt like this show built momentum. It wasn't til It Beats that they really caught their stride.

Line started forming at around 3:30, though we didn't enter the venue until about quarter after 4. Setlist was:
And a brief slice of "In Its Infancy" where Jim conducted an "Analysis" to determine if the audience liked the drums better when struck by sticks or mallets. (We chose mallets)

The guys were all really friendly, interacting with the audience – which I'd say was about 30 people – throughout.

Last night was the Soundcheck Party for Detroit, right?  Has anyone posted details (line formation time, admission time, attendance, set list, etc.) on this yet?

Did you have to leave the venue and get in line for pit wristbands? or were you allowed to stay inside the venue/given wristband?

They started a bit after 9 and wrapped up around 11:20ish I think. Could have been a bit later.

What a show.....

War Begun, Dondante, both in one show. I'm blown away.

I don't remember the full list honestly but just to name off some we had War Begun, Dondante, The Way That He Sings, Lay Low, Touch Me, a few new songs off of Waterfall, Wonderful, ended with Circutal....man that song gets people going. Came out for the encore and all I remember is Dancefloors, Black Metal, and ended with One Big Holiday.

My mind is still blown. Only downside was last minute decision to go. Never sitting in the balcony seats ever again. Bunch of nazi ushers and a pretty boring crowd.

Just got back safely from a oh-so-sweet trek to the Motor City.

I may be in the minority here but I stand by the fact that Night 1 was the best I've ever seen 'em. Steam Engine into Only Memories Remain was fucking magical. Beyond magic actually, it was some voodoo witchcraft type shit. The set was perfect, the crowd (where I was) was unbelievable and the positive energy was flowin' like a waterfall. Or river? Can't pinpoint exactly what type of body of water it was, but it was oh-so refreshing.

Night 2 was fantastic and I am SO HAPPY to have finally made good on my chase for Twilight!! The only bummer was that a bunch of chicks and their stupid boyfriends pushed past me and my girlfriend right as that song was starting and then the girls decided to hop on their boyfriends shoulders, completely blocking us. Did a Hawk Harrelson-esque YOU GOTTA BE BLEEPING ME and told them to get down, which they did, but then they just broke out into a selfie shoot so we had to get the fuck out of that spot. Which was awesome because we found the folks we were rockin' with on Night 1 and the good vibes returned! If you're here, great rockin' with you guys!

Another vibe report, brought to you by oistheone

I'll post pics when I get home, but there were two prints.  that green one in an edition of 150, and the same design on orange paper instead of green which was a run of 125  I believe.  Also, Jim's signature is tucked on the lower left near the axe.

He said he was, so hopefully we will see both shows. He did say it takes some time to process everything and get it uploaded. Kudos to him tho...I don't see a lot of tapers at Detroit shows, sadly.

WOWWWWW.

Okay. First shows since 2011, only 3rd and 4th shows ever.

We were on the balcony the first night, which wasn't even half full. EVERYONE was sitting down. Pretty weak, but I got over it. Our group stood up the whole show and rocked out. I really like how they're opening shows with the curtain and the waterfall sounds. Believe was a great tempo setter.

The second night we were on the floor, and it took me a while to get comfortable. My girlfriend and I got to the 3rd row between the opener and MMJ, but felt extremely uncomfortable. I told myself I'd stay for the first song or two. It happened to be Spring and Compound, the two new tracks I was looking forward to hearing the most. Unfortunately I didn't get to enjoy them that much since I felt so trapped. After moving around to a few spots throughout the show, we spent the encore with this GREAT group who was rockin out. I've never seen so much air guitar in my life. If the two dudes rockin out on the second level of the floor, Carl's side, are on here -- thanks for the good vibes!

The greatest thing was that the songs I enjoyed the most were the ones I least expected, particularly the Circuital tracks. First Light rocked. Wonderful was beautiful. My girlfriend and I got to a clear spot on the steps and just stood there and took it all in - had a great view.

The encores both nights were sooo dirty. Hopefully/Victory Dance/Gideon/Touch Me 2/Mahgeetah. Are you kidding me? Touch Me of course ended with Good Intentions, and as soon as it got to "okay, cool," Jim went straight into the Magheetah riff. Very cool.

The second encore. My god. Circuital was maybe the song of the night for me, which again, surprises me as I've been kinda burned out on that song. It was cool though because I hadn't seen them since the Circuital tour, and it was nice hearing this song as a MMJ staple instead of a new song. Holdin On To Black Metal will always be one of my favorites. Don't understand the hate. Anytime --> One Big Holiday...I don't know if there's a better way to end a show.

Aw hell, I'm rambling again. Just an amazing time.

Hear ya loud and clear RR! As sweet as it is to be up close and personal, it's not worth it if you can't enjoy it. Had some similar experiences on the second night -- had a sweet spot right in the middle about 10 feet from the stage but some dude kept elbowing me in the back and I had to bail.

Cannot wait to get my hands on these tapings. Really hoping they surface soon!

Amen to that. I wasn't at Detroit, but I've been telling my friends that Circuital is one song I'd like to see less of. I had seen MMJ live 9 times now since becoming a giant fan in 2011 and Circuital was in every set list. The Cleveland show was the first time Circuital wasn't there for me. I was grateful at the time (made room for Masterplan and other goodies), but then I watched the Bonnaroo live stream. Circuital sounded soooooo good!!!
