We're all thinking about it... someone had to do it!
I'm guessing 2016 will be a quiet year after the behemoth that was 2015.
Did you know MMJ played more shows this year than any year since 2004?!?
Might we see something like 2010? A run of festivals and smaller shows in the spring, followed by a late-summer/fall run?
Let the speculation begin!
you are right, I feel that 2016 will def be lighter. Do we know if JJ is going to release a solo album and if they will push back the new album to 2017?
Jim said they were too busy to do OBH. Forum members feel pretty strongly that a red rocks two-nighter will happen in may. Hard to say what that means.
RR x 2 would be most excellent. I'd make that into a sweet 6-8 day vacay: Morrisson - Boulder - Rockies. Haven't been to either yet.
Someone said that they are trying to do RRx2 in May, but they won't be playing many, if any, shows outside of that in 2016
Unfortunately all the weekends are already booked in May 2016, might be weekdays...
Thanks for clarifying E Wind.
Although now I'm probably more confused than ever about their strategy. I'll take two nights at Red Rocks any way i can get them but it doesn't make sense to me that they would play those two nights and little to nothing else. Time will tell.
I'm guessing a Jim record comes out in '16, he tours/does festies, maybe a few MMJ dates like RR and then 2017 is mirrors 2015 (OBH, record, huge touring schedule). my complete speculation

Red Rocks? Do you have inside info.? Because according to this calendar...
http://redrocksonline.com/concerts-events/calendar/2016/05
May 28th and 29th are available, which is Sat. and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.
Just trying to be optimistic, since I am planning a trip to AZ in May and those dates would fit perfectly! Ha!
I think a few scattered festivals and a tour in the fall makes the most sense. Probably Coachella which they played lasy in 2008, and likely Shaky Knees in Atlanta. They did most of the other southern festivals last year (Bonnaroo, Hangout, Forecastle) and SK did get its name from an MMJ lyric.
Kind of bummed that there might not be a lot of shows in 2016, but at least I caught 6 shows in 2015 so I can't complain too much.
If they are indeed playing Red Rocks in May, I would assume the move would be to throw some festivals in there too. Like others have speculated, Shaky Knees makes a lotta sense. Maybe NO Jazz Fest too?
I'm thinking solo tour in 2016 and potentially back to business in late summer /Fall 2017

Where did the RR in May rumor come from? I haven't heard this before.
So Bo mentioned a "light schedule" for 2016 and did say a "possible" 2 night run at RR around May. They are going to concentrate on the new album and it's too hard doing that while touring. So, my thoughts are an extremely light set of shows throughout the year, with a heavy tour in 2017. Hopefully getting back in line with OBH. It's like Jim kept saying in Mexico, "I hope we can do this for years to come". I think because he knew they would be hella busy with 2 new albums / promotion / etc. 2016 was a huge success and major stepping stone. They're a class act and glad we're all getting to experience it. This type of magic doesn't come around too often. [emoji111]🏽️
I hate to be a downer... But I'm not getting my hopes up for Red Rocks in May. Even though Bo himself said they had 2 dates reserved, it's not confirmed, and I don't want to set myself up for disappointment like when it was announced that it was Kid fuckin Rock and not MMJ who's playing in Louisville NYE.
But, if they do announce it, you know I'll be there!!!
Heck, wherever they end up playing in 2016 I'll be there...
Lots of scuttle about Red Rocks. I'm hoping they play it!!!!
Weekends in May are almost already filled up which would mean this is either not happening, they are playing towards the beggining of the month or they are playing two mid week shows which would be surprising for a two night run.

I wouldn't consider it surprising at all, imo. They played a 3-Nighter in Chicago this year that spanned Tues-Thurs. I'm sure several of the 2-nighters were also during early or mid week. Granted, this may not be in the midst of an extended tour, but I don't see them shying away from playing due to the nights of the week. "Jacket Nation" (har har har) will show up either way, especially if they aren't going to be touring very much apart from Red Rocks.
More speculation - MMJ to play Jazzfest in late April. Man I hope so. So depressed not knowing when my next show will be. Also heard from the same source (a generally reliable one) that RR is likely

This wishful thinking? Or are you seein' some smoke signals?? A return to JazzFest is my dream scenario right now!

I saw MMJ at JF last time they played and it's definitely not a true MMJ show.. Very short set, sun is out (jazz fest ends at like 8).. Now if they do a late night set with preservation hall or at the HOB that's another story but just jazz fest is just meh (IMO).
In October of 2014 they mentioned that they had enough material for two albums so I'm thinking they will release an album in the fall and have a spring tour in 2017.
Hopefully any rumored May shows would be late in the month. It could snow in early May.

From a reliable source who is usually spot on. At this point, I just want to know when I can see these guys again. That beacon run was magical.

It seems highly unlikely at this point that they would release the next album in the fall. It actually seems unlikely to me that they would even be back in the studio before next fall. By all accounts, it seems as if Jim's next solo album will come before the next Jacket album. So you figure that will probably get released in the spring at the earliest, followed by a solo tour over the summer and fall. That would mean Jacket back in the studio Winter 2016 at the earliest, with a potential Spring 2017 release. Seems like a long time to wait but the past 3 or 4 albums have each taken about 3 years, so to only have to wait 2 is a blessing... and I think that's what they had in mind.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiice. If that holds true we should know within the first two weeks of January!

Here's the article I was talking about: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/jim-james-my-morning-jackets-two-new-albums-20141203
I know it's unlikely, but we can dream right! I'm from Texas and had to wait from 2008 until this year to see MMJ again (ended up catching 3 shows to make up for it). I was in school when they did their circitual tour... I thought they hated Texas or something. I did see Jim James solo tour, but the closest the band came was Louisiana and Tennessee. Regardless, if they have another monster tour I will be ecstatic!

Yes, that was the talk before the Waterfall was released. However, here is one of the latest Jimterviews:
http://www.jambase.com/Articles/127073/Interview-Catching-Up-With-Jim-James-Of-My-Morning-Jacket
Specifically, this part is relevant:
----
JamBase: When The Waterfall was announced, it was said there would be two albums spread a year apart. Is there still a new album coming in 2016?
JJ: [Sigh] That was sort of taken out of context. I was just trying to say we'd recorded a bunch of songs. We wanted to put out another record sooner than we normally do but I wasn't sure how that would happen so I don't know. There's a lot we've recorded that exist but [those songs] still need work and there are other things to record before we could say a record is ready. But you never know ... Things can happen really fast.
-----
So if you think that Jim can finish, release and tour behind his solo album, and the band can finish, release, and announce a tour by August let's say...then your dream is very much alive and I would love to live in that world :) But if i am a bettin' man i'm saying the next album will be released in spring of 2017 (at the earliest).
Thanks for sharing that interview! I hadn't read that. I was pretty optomistic about 2016, but that definitely suggests it wont get released until later. Im still hoping they play a couple shows or festivals this year so that I wont be on another MMJ dryspell
All I can say after reading this thread is... Believe, Nobody knows.
The band did post on social medial after finishing CA dates this year "See you soon California".
just saw that Forecastles lineup is being announced tomorrow...chances we get MMJ there? do they ever have the same band two years in a row?

saw this too - hoping they get to headline again - obviously would be the first confirmed 2016 date for MMJ. Part of me thinks that they will leave one night headlining spot open and MMJ will confirm when they are good & ready.....
This being said, I already bought our weekend passes last Friday :)
I doubt MMJ will play Forecastle this year. It's a Louisville festival, not a MMJ festival. Either way, it is a nice smaller festival to go to. They usually have a good lineup, and it's nice not to have to hike a mile across a farm to get to the stages.
Jacket may be a long shot, but a Jim James solo set? That's infinitely more likely in my opinion. No sources, just given that he is working on his second album right now (per the interview i posted) and the timeline makes sense.
Would be really awesome if Jim tours and expands his set to 18 to 20 songs. We get most of the new stuff (8-9), some regions (5-6), and then an assortment of Jim projects like MoF, Basement Tapes, and acoustic lesser played Jacket tunes (5-7).
If anyone has any further tour intel (specifically: New Orleans in April) now would be an awesome time to come forward! Can only swing one spring trip and I'm dying to know if NOLA is an option!
Nothing specific to add, but for weeks I've been thinking along with the Red Rocks show that was just announced and Shaky Knees festival that has been rumored, closing this leg out with a four night set at the Palace, sure would be nice for their home town / region fans!
