Title: Red Rocks and other killer shows
Post by: gcanini on Jun 10, 2016, 10:20 PM
Hello fellow MMJ fans,

So I've gotten into MMJ in the past year and a half. I know their catalogue very well and consider them my favorite band. I've seen them twice, and I streamed the RR show last year.

I've recently watched the RR shows (still finishing the 5/29 show) on Youtube. Does anyone else think that RR 5/28 was their greatest performance? I mean, I know that they are getting older and Jim's voice isn't what it used to be, but their interplay and overall sound is just incredible these days. It's a shame they aren't touring this summer. (I'm actually seeing them with Ray Lamontagne tomorrow night).

Is RR from 5/28 their best performance? If not what are others and where can I find them? (I know about Bonnaroo '06 and Okonokos)

I have caught bits of that one. Pretty damn good. Probably the last time they played Cobra in full. (Well the first three sections, at least)

One thing I have noticed (no offense intended whatsoever) is that the new fans always tend to feel that the show they just saw had to be one of their best ever, best of the tour, best version of a song, etc. I've read similar accounts on this forum over the last couple years. I think it's a testament to the bands awesomess and how amazing they are live.

No doubt that's what it is, and amazingly enough they just seem to be getting better and better! I know in years past, I thought that was a great show/tour. No way it can get better, then I went to another show/tour!!

I will say I thought both RR shows were fantastic, and they were on top of their game both nights. I wouldn't say they were my best shows ever but they were up there in the conversation (especially night 1) and that's a testament to how amazing they are live. I do think it was the best Picture Of You and State Of The Art I've seen them do.

it WAS the greatest Picture of You, and next to 10/07/2015 it was the best State of The Art!!! Just like you said.

I wasn't there to see that one but SOTA gets better every time I see it. I was blown away the first time and now have seen it 5 or so times and each time it seems like it was better than the previous one.

I'm already looking forward to the next one whenever it is. (Hopefully before the year is up)

I would agree with you that these shows, as a 1-2 combo, were the best shows that I know of. These were my 5th and 6th shows for them and I've only seen them in the Southwest. Actually saw them in '08 at Red Rocks when the Keys opened up for them but I don't remember that being this impactful. I know some people who have seen them upwards of 30 times and might disagree because they have more experience and to each their own. However, these were my two favorite live performances of all time. Not just for MMJ but my favorite live music experiences ever. I introduced a buddy to them a couple years back and he feels the same way about these shows being the best concerts he has ever seen.

After reading some of the above posts, I agree that they are getting better. But how do you beat 27 songs, 3 hours of music, TWICE!!! I envy people who live near Red Rocks and get to see bands there consistently. Victory Dance to start the weekend was so powerful and Phone Went West was my favorite of both nights. Plus I love the trio of Just One Thing > Wonderful > Golden. That was beautiful. We'll see what happens at the next show. Glad that you enjoyed them. If you think they were great on Youtube, imagine if you would have been there...

Such a good point....There is no coincidence in that moment...just the magic in the world that this band is a lightning rod for.

I personally liked the RR 2012 better. And I still really like the first 3 nights of the T5 run better. But these were really run shows. So no not their best performance imo.

Steam Engine into Knockin' On Heaven's Door was probably a top 3 highlight of the weekend for me. I certainly didn't expect Tyrone to come back either. That was probably the biggest "holy shit" moment for me.

I can't speak to "best ever" and all of that, but 5/28 was my 9th show of MMJ's.  My first show was in 2004.  They have gotten so much better as the years have rolled on.  My wife and I were absolutely blown away by the show they put on and the music they created on 5/28.  It definitely wasn't the setlist I would have written if I had the pen, and it came off perfectly.  We were so excited by it that we toyed with the idea of going to Lockin', but the price is too steep for us.  Regardless, we won't miss another Red Rocks run.

I was at both nights and to me, 5/29 was even better. 5/28 killed for sure, and it had some supremely exciting moments - Golden, Smokin' From Shootin' and State of the Art being three of them. It might just be personal preference, but from beginning to end their set on 5/29 just did it for me. Great weekend!!!!
