does MMJ allow you to plug in to Sound Boards?

So if they're don't allow for it - why not? What's the reasoning to let someone or no let someone plug in?
No they don't. On the archive it says "Don't like the board sound but are cool with aud taping, so bring your mics."
With SBD feeds you don't necessarily get a true representation of what the show sounded like. Sound guys have to compensate for the sound already coming off the stage and maybe mix things higher or lower depending on the room. With a direct feed, you would only be hearing what was running through the board and nothing else.

yeah, but SBD recordings are awesome! Especially when matrixed with Audience recordings. I don't think ATO would let them do if they wanted to though.

bummer...I've been listening all the Ryan Adams show recently (all SBD) and they sound wonderful! Wish we had this for MMJ...
how long is their contract with ATO? and do you know what it entails?

I don't remember the terms right now but I could probably find out. I think they should be getting pretty close to the end. I bet they go indy with Jim's label after ATO. When they signed Jim said the only reason he signed is because they wanted everyone in the world to have access to their music and ATO gave them that. I don't think that's a problem these days.

no, no it's not.
Most of the really good Ryan Adams SBDs are from when they were playing mostly acoustic, probably with a low stage volume... Hence, the really well-balanced mix on some of those recordings.
However, I have heard some really good electric SBDs from his shows as well. Maybe they keep their stage volume under control. :)

Could you point towards some of the good RA SBDs, especially on the acoustic tour. I can probably track down the recordings if you've got the dates. that tour was 06 right?

Anyone notice the overpowering sound of the snare drum on some of the electric SBD recordings? POW!
I just saw RA last week at the fox theatre and the show was really amazing, but I still just don't understand why they have to take 60-90 seconds in between every song and create those awkward moments.
I wanted to see Love Is Hell and Broadway and they were the last two songs of the night! Sweet...

Dylan, seems like the DVD that we watched at your house was from around that time. Ryan couldn't play guitar at the time, so they stripped the shows down and played some really cool, quiter shows.

Yeah, that's what I was looking for, a decent audio recording from that time period. That DVD we watched is my favorite thing I have of RA, I wish I could just rip the audio from it but I'm not that good at puters. I'll check out shows from that time period. Thanks guys!
After I posted that date, I realized that's how (and why) I found that show. I really enjoyed that DVD and was looking for stuff from that time. There's several good ones on the archive.
Those Ryan Adams shows are NOT pure sbds. They are actually matrixes that his sound gun runs and then provides a patch-bay for the tapers to record. He runs 2 mics on the sides of the stage angled in and then I think last year he started using another mic back athe board to capture the room.

Thanks for the info, Craig. I thought they were very well mixed to be straight SBDs, but the matrix comment makes more sense. Seems like a bunch of the ones that I saw on the archive just said SBD, but maybe they weren't labeled properly or something.
Either way, they sound fucking great.
