"the idea for "starting from scratch" came from a solo trip i took in southern california. on a really cloudy day, i drove up into the mountains above malibu. i was thinking I'd still go ahead and take a hike even if i couldn't see anything. to my surprise, i actually drove up into, and then through the clouds. it felt like i was inside the sky. the clouds were draping and scraping around the mountains. i was all alone up there, the first person on the trails. spider webs still remained from the night before, and lizards darted around. that spot felt so precious and almost sacred that i didn't want to come down. but when i finally did, my brain seemed to have completely rebooted itself."
Fuck yeah Carl!

you mean he's not passive-aggressively airing out the ending of the band? ;)
Can't wait!!!
Really like this first single
Thanks for posting the new song. I thought it was pretty good.. hoping that I like the album more than his last. I enjoyed his first solo album more.

Hahaha
I've heard rumblings of Jim and Patrick at odds . Just rumors from Facebook but I posted something about it on here and it was removed. It was bizsrre. I doubt the rumors but it makes me on edge with all the solo stuff. 2019?? Maybe 2020 by the time it's all said and done
Also...got tickets to Carl's show in SLC 10/29. This is crazy. Both Jim and Carl in my town within the same week? Daaaaaamn

It's gonna be EPIC. Let's hope they cross paths . Let's hope Jim workshops some of the new Jacket material in these solo shows.
Lots of Tom!

That song is a tear jerker man....Its pretty hard to be optimistic at this point about Carl's frame of mind re:MMJ with Starting from Scratch and Wished Out lyrics (regardless of his and Jim's comments when SFS was released). MMJ may not be breaking up, but it may not be the same lineup of band members next time around..... But maybe the significant time off will heal any/all wounds.
House concert is tempting. Get a few people to go in on it and it doesn't seem so pricey.

I dunno, I feel like announcing a break up or alluding to it through song is very popish/teenie bopper.
Just don't think that's how a band like MMJ would go about it.
I think they're just songs and people are losing it because the band took a break from a stale waterfall tour.
Carl toured with Ray, Bo had a once in a lifetime opportunity with roger waters. I think the band is just pursuing other opportunities until they're ready to get back at it.. Let's stop over speculating here.

More than true. However, I don't think the Waterfall tour was bad.
Patrick is keeping busy with touring with Jake Shears along with other Louisville musicians and friends and doing other fun collaborations.
Tom and Bo helped out on Carl's new album.
Tom and Patrick got together to perform with Mickey Raphael at his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Jim and Patrick's family members come out to Carl's Louisville shows to give him support (I've seen them there and talked to them).
These dudes are all friends, collaborators, musicians, and family together. They also know where their success and fame comes from, and that's from My Morning Jacket. It's good they can take breaks and do other projects. Their fan base will always be there for them, and they know that. They can play festivals, arenas, theaters, small clubs, or whatever they like. They have it made.
I absolutely loved the waterfall tour, my comment was more based on it being a multi year tour, after a while a band has to give up touring on an album especially if it is a few years old.
I respectfully disagree with the statement above. Not every tour has to be in some way associated with an album. That seems a bit like the old school way of doing things. Lots of bands in today's music industry climate (the good ones!) make their names on touring not releasing albums. I have no problem with mmj taking an extended break, but you don't need a new album to go on tour.

Yes, but they toured the waterfall non-stop for two years. I agree with your statement but at the end of the day that's what the band was touring pre-break.
I mean even the bands website is still waterfall themed to this day.

Thanks, that is a cool song.
I just think on their next album, (which will absolutely happen within the next two years) has some pedal steel and omnichord on it!
But seriously, anyone who thinks they're "angry" at each other is just trying to create drama and I know they all love each other. No band ever has made great album after great album year after year. I'm all for whatever break they take to make themselves happy.

totally agree & no intention to stir the pot. keeping in mind that albums are mostly released about a year after initial studio and production, so the lyrics may reflect sentiment from early 2017 as opposed to the "right now". Maybe what we're seeing in UD and WO are thought streams from early last year that led up to the notion of a hiatus and need for artistic and personal breathing room. All in all, I'm not concerned about a break up as much as I'm just thirsty for a glimpse of when they'll emerge....
my meme was completely in jest, i know you're not that type.

Quotes from an interview with Carl in the Poughkeepsie Journal:
#1 -
"The aura of your larger project is always hovering around you," he said of My Morning Jacket.
He added, "I'm a musician and I've always been a musician and I've always written songs. If I'm honest with myself, I am probably a more adept band member and not so much a front man. And that's fine. I'm really super comfortable in that space. I know what I'm doing and I have a lot of experience doing that."
Speaking of his solo work, Broemel said, "This is the scariest thing I do. It's a personal challenge."
#2 -
Broemel will be on the road promoting "Wished Out" through November. So what's in store for My Morning Jacket?
"Nothing concrete," he said. "We're on a break. It feels like we're going to rally the troops at some point."
deep pull! the Poughkeepsie Journal!!

The troops will be rallied sooner or later. Everyone should relax as it will happen when it happens.

Excellent. This album is really awesome, can't wait to spin the vinyl Friday.
Thanks for posting.
Gave it 2 full listens so far and must say I enjoy it.
Not including the first three songs that were previously released, I am really diggin Second Fiddle
Really enjoying this album.
Did anyone else get a 'they loved eachother' vibe from the tune Second Fiddle?
Highlights for me are easily
Second Fiddle
Out of Reach
Wished Out
Really dig this album more than Uniform distortion if we are going to compare recent Solo releases.
I have a couple download codes for Carl's new album for the first two people who pm me.
Update: They are spoken for!

That's a great read, thank you for posting!
Yes that is a good read and I like the reassuring quote
"because you can really help each other through something. Like , 'Oh shit, we're messing up this song,' and we all figure it out. Or spread the work as far as doing interviews and promo stuff. (Solo work) is a cool challenge, but I have the benefit of knowing that this isn't the only thing I do. I'm going to go back and play with the band."

Also "There's been a couple times where we kind of jumped the gun in talking about stuff" as in the second Waterfall album and the Live album. I appreciate the not starting rumors. They'll all join forces again when the time is right and I for one think they'll be refreshed and even more awesome.
I really like this album, and liked his last as well. I am extremely in the zone for really liking the music Carl makes. Really wish I could make a solo show this tour.
FUN interview with Tim Showalter and Carl:

Damn, Carl interviews with Nels Cline AND Tim Showalter this week. two killers right there.
Was lucky enough to see Carl live last night in LA. Saw a couple other OBHers there. While pulling up to the venue I almost ran Jim over as he was crossing the street (wearing all black, but he had his white tennis shoes on). It was cool to see Jim there supporting Carl.
Steelism opened and were a lot of fun. They did a great cover of the Batman theme. Carl joined them for a couple songs at the end then they bugged off for a couple minutes before coming back for Carl's set.
Carl's set was just pure joy. The way that man can play guitar is just amazing to witness. The songs were a lot of fun, very rocking. We got Carried Away into I Only Have Eyes For You, a solo Carl version of Radiohead's Pyramid Song, and a show ending 4th of July with Nick Drake's Pink Moon in the middle.
My wife got a picture with Carl after the show, I talked briefly with Jim while in line at the restroom (Jim was a perfect gentleman - he realized he was cutting the line (it was a confusing line) and stepped back and allowed the lady waiting in line to go). Grabbed setlists for both Carl & Steelism as well.
It was just a shame there was hardly anyone there. It was great seeing him in such a small venue, but the attendance was criminally small.
Seeing Jim next Friday - can't wait!
