Title: Greatest Songs of All Time
Post by: RobRoy286 on Aug 30, 2019, 10:58 AM
Well, folks, what do you think? I know it's a big question, but sometimes you just hear a song for the thousandth time and there's no denying it's an all-timer. Obviously this is subjective, but I'm curious to see what people think.

I'm asking because this morning I listened to and learned how to play Bridge Over Troubled Water, and it just hit me like a ton of bricks. Such a beautiful song and honestly it might be at the top for me - for sure a top 5.

Let's just talk about great music!

So many options to think about but the first few off the top of my head:
Something-The Beatles
Baba O'Riley-The Who
Purple Rain-Prince
Knockin' On Heaven's Door (so many bob dylan songs could go here but this was the first one I thought of)

I was trying to pick my favorite Beatles song, and Sirius XM has the top 100 countdown going on and counted the Abbey Road "medley" as one song.  So.....

Beatles - Abbey Road medley
Pearl Jam  - Present Tense and Alive
Tool - Lateralus
Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)

in the non-Beatles/Dylan/Stones category, I would throw out these

Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum (maybe my favorite song)
Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross version (1970)
Your Song - Elton John
(What a) Wonderful World - Sam Cooke
What's Going On - Marvin Gaye

Martha - Tom Waits
Helplessly Hoping - Crosby, Stills, & Nash
No Woman, No Cry - Bob Marley
Dig A Pony - The Beatles

Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel (gotta add another from one of my favorite records  )
Darcy Farrow - Steve Gillette (John Denver's version is best, of course)
Purple Haze - Jimi
Savoy Truffle - Beatles
Wharf Rat - Grateful Dead
Where to Now St. Peter? - Elton John
Xanadu (especially from Exit Stage Left) - Rush -- I'm sure many won't agree for various reasons, but I feel like this is an incredibly great rock song and should be included in the pantheon

Trying to think of recent releases to add-only 6 years ago but have to imagine Jason Isbell's Cover Me Up is an all timer.
