I'll be honest, I didn't excpect a reply, but when I saw that Jim had replied, I was squealing like a 13 year old girl seeing John Mayer!

they truly are the most fan friendly band.

You rule Jim!

Yeah, that's a nice response.  I'm trying to figure out this all ages show thing.  Is it a rule that you can't sell alcohol if it's all ages?  What if you go with an adult?  I bet they would let you in the Exit/In with your dad or another adult.  I know I went to an all ages show at the Vanderbilt gym to see Modest Mouse and the atmosphere was horrible.  On the other hand I love the Exit/In it's my favorite concert venue of all time.

I'm sure the reason the atomosphere was horrible at the Modest Mouse show was due to all the trendy kids who have caught on to them due to their recent radio hit. On the other hand Gavin DeGraw opened *shudders*

I had planned on going but it was sold out :(

Also, many venues sell alcohol at all ages show. I just saw Elvis Costello at the Ryman and before that Interpol at Bogarts in cincinnati. Both were all ages and both sold alcohol.

The Ryman's different than a club, though.  In Ontario, the medium venues (like an exit/in) all sell alcohol, and so you have to be 19+ to get in.  Those are the laws.

And I think that for clubs like this to survive, they have to serve alcohol.

Sucks if you're not old enough, though...  :/

If all you are worried about is getting your drink on...may I suggest bonging a few beers before entering the show.  Afterall, it is "Spring Break" time. Bust out your beer bong of yesteryear and party like its Panama City 1997.

I'm not interested in hurling.  I just like to enjoy a cold one while I'm listening to live music.

P.S.

I have to admit it was hard to recover from Gavin Degraw.  That was the worst thing I've layed eyes on in a long, long time.  I really needed a beer after that shit.

heh.  I'm the same.  That's why I like the smaller venues better than the megadomes.  Beer is ridiculously expensive at those massive concerts, and it makes me mad.

I do remember that before I was old enough to get into certain shows, I used to be really angry about that.  It's like how you can't vote until you're 18, but you're still a citizen, and you still have an opinion in how your country is run.  It's the same with the shows in bars - you still love the band, and you still are a fan and have as much to do with their success as everyone else does.

BUT.  And this is a but that's difficult to say without offending everybody under the age of 19, and it certainly is not a specific but, and it's not directed at you personally Specialist - I have to admit, that the all-ages shows I've been to drive me crazy.  Part of that is just the difference in energies.  The difference in mellowness...

But having said that, I can think of a few drunk bastards that I've encountered at shows, where it would've been nicer if they were a sixteen year-old.

Or you could do like I did - before I was old enough, I was dating a guy in a band, and used to get to see about half the shows - the other half they wouldn't let me in.  So my Mom got me fake id.  It wasn't like I wanted to go out and get wasted, and I never really used it outside of going to shows.  But she thought it was ridiculous that I couldn't go see him play.  And I'd get stuck downtown by myself, until he was done playing, and have to go find coffee shops that were open late.

So kids, hit yer parents up!!

(oooh, I can't tell if you're mad at me.  I know you work with the boys and girls club, so now I'm nervous.)

I should say that fake ids are illegal, and that they're only really good for getting into shows if you happen to be a mature person who doesn't deserve to miss fantastic rock.

And you should NEVER use them to buy beer for your friends and make a profit from it!!  N.E.V.E.R.

I got an email reply from Jim last year...it was very cool that he wrote back, I was so excited.  The thing I was baffled about was the he signed it like so:

"mmm...brains" -zombie

Yeah, I didn't get it. ???

JJ seems to have a knack for nebulous sign offs.  for a while he was using:

"you're not cookin'"--kid

i'm pretty sure the "you're not cookin" comes from one of those GI Joe videos from the fensler film website. they circulated the web a while ago and were f-in hilarious. this guy dubbed over old GI cartoons with awesome shit, that one had these two kids cooking and starting a fire...haha i'm cracking up just thinking about it. i wish i could find it.

I think you might find it at www.fenslerfilms.com .

Well isn't it funny how everything comes full circle.

(I always thought he'd been quoting Kid Rock.)

heh.  Yeah.  But I couldn't think of anyone else named kid.  But it all makes sense now.

whothrewthecake, I found the films the other day when I was trying to figure out who Mr. Fensler was.  It was on an interview.  Let me see if I can google it again, and find the link for you.

I couldn't get video for that one, either.  Other ones I did, though...
