Title: Representing the South Well!!
Post by: TheMadHatter on Feb 09, 2005, 03:06 AM
It made me so proud to be a southerner the first time i heard MMJ.All so often southerners get the stereotypical response of,rednecks, inbreeders, cousin f**kers, etc. but these guys actually tell the world we can sing about other things than fighting over Ellie May and pounding booze at the local biker bar. It,s even better to hear Jim talk because i feel i dont have to hide my southern, country boy drawl.Hell,it makes me proud to have it.
                          Thanks Guys!!

Ooooh, don't hide your drawl.  Most of the world loves the drawl!

It's funny to hear people say that Jim has a southern accent.  It definitely depends on perspective.  To me he barely has any accent at all.  Most people from KY or the south for that matter would probably agree that he "ain't got much accent" at all.  Besides, who cares.

you hit it right on the head.  it is a matter of perspective.

to wit,

last may, we drove up to milwaukee for a killer MMJ show.  the next morning, hungry for alcohol soakin' grease, we stopped in a perkin's for some breakfast.

the waitress, a really nice girl of about 20, all gothed-out and whatnot, sounded like we were about 1000 miles more north than we were.  she teased us about our accent ("you sound like you've got a mint julep in your hand when you're talking") and we teased her about her accent (golly, I didn't know Canada had moved this far south!")...nothing mean, in fact it was quite..um...flirty??  ;)

so yeah, being a transplant from Pennsylvania and living here for 15 years turned me from a Yankee soundin' cracka to a more laid back Louisvillian, and that is a good thing.  i don't hear "accents" per se from jim or anyone here unless i drive about 20 minutes to the south...

I orignally hailed from the south, but my mother trained me out of the accent at sort of an early age. Now I've moved and have a much more northern/slightly eastern seaboard-ish accent (i.e. funny "o"s). The drawl works its way back in, especially when I'm down in Tennessee for extended periods of time. It should be in full raging force when I head off to college in Nashville next year.

Anybody else here in college in Nashville?

Heh.  I wondered who would be the one to say it.  HA!  But I don't talk like that, do I?  For real.  I don't, right?

And Eisey, I wish I was going to college in Nashville.  Except for the college part.

Actually, the college part is going to rock. I'm going to be studying Music Business at Belmont Univeristy, so I'm basically going to college to learn how to be a producer and studio engineer, which I would love doing. Plus, I'll be right int he heart of an awesome city.

I was working at a landscape job back in the day, and, though I've lived in the south all my life, a co-worker identified my accent as upstate N.Y.  That's where my mom's parents are from, though she was raised in Kentucky.

Crazy, eh?

And Eisey - I love Nashville.  A high school friend of mine went to Belmont to learn production.  He used to be really into hip-hop.  Now he makes a living writing country songs.

Fuck I wish I were going to college anywhere!  Milk every second of it because after that it's time to go to WORK!  Ughh, and that sucks.

QuoteCanadians don't have accents.

sure you don't--just watch "Strange Brew" w/ Bob and Doug. ;)

Regarding Mr. James I would definitely say his accent is extremely mild--almost non-existent and I've hung with a broad spectrum of Southern folk (not that accent makes any diff--the wicked voice is the heart of the matter)...

Ever notice the local TV news anchors down south have pretty much no accent at all?  I still have figured that out...

Being a homegrown Southerner myself who, I am told far and wide from many many people, does not have an accent, I have to relate that Jim's accent is very slight, and not as noticeable when he sings, and definitely an Eastern-Southern accent rather than a Western-Southern (Mississippi-Arkansas-Louisiana) of which I have more personal experience. I think it is refreshing to hear a rock 'n' roll artist with an accent that is not from New York, Seattle, Detroit, etc.

As for the TV anchor thing, they either make the anchors change their accent or they only hire anchors that have "neutral" accents (usually considered those from west Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, non-Chicago Illinois). God's honest truth.

You GO!  Yeah!

And, I think the thing is that anybody who's not where you're from is gonna think you have an accent.  Even if it's slight.  :)

There is nothing like livin' in the South.  Where else can you get away with having six rusty, non working cars on cinder blocks in your front yard?   ;D

Rural Ontario.  But the South (I'm sure) is wicked.

I would imagine that it's pretty safe to say "rurual [insert the name of the small town]" for anywhere.  :)  Like, for example, my Dad's farm has a metal heap that has probably the equivalent to four cars in there.  Plus a couple of home appliances, and some kind of grain crusher or something.  And it's OOOOOOLD.  And it's almost covered in dirt and plants now.
