My Morning Jacket's New Album Is 'Is'

Signed copy sold out in 6 minutes??? What the fuck.
It seemed to be up for a while. I ordered around 8 central time.
If I were Carl, I wouldn't like the album cover. The way it kinda warps his face isn't the most flattering shot, and Carl is a handsome dude.
Pro: I really like how the album cover reminds me on "Rubber Soul" one of my favorite albums of all time.
Con: I really thing the new song is very bland and boring, hope the rest will be much better.

I noticed that too! His face looks weird!

I think the song is really pretty and sweet, a pretty decent song for a single i'd say. Obviously i assume there will be some bangers on the album. But Time Waited is an automatic upgrade to "Aren't We One" so i'm happy there.
Time Waited is a nice song. Wouldn't be out of place on Waterfall 2. Personally I don't care if there are no dick swinging rock bangerz on this record. They've been there and done that. I'm here for another left turn!
Looking forward to this one as BOB has been involved in some of my favorite albums.

He must not have been at that band meeting. It's like when someone posts a group picture and everyone else looks phenomenal and you look like a troll. I demand a repress with new cover art for Carl!

I'm on the opposite side of you on this. They made their bones on banging rock tunes and are a killer rock and roll band.
It along with their great live shows is what got me hooked and I want more of it. I think we've been there and done that with the catchier, ear pleasing softer tunes and while I don't mind them here or there I don't want an album of them.
I like the newly released single but it left me hoping for and wanting edgier. The same feeling I had when I first heard Compound Fracture. It's fine but left me wanting.

I won't say no to any tunes that rip, but if the band aren't in that place then so be it. They shouldn't force it. I'm a musical chameleon and listen to all kinds of stuff, so I'm down for whatever. Bring it

THIS THIS THIS.
Leave it to my guy EricM to set it straight.
My Morning Jacket haven't made a rock and roll record arguably since Z....
We've had left turns & ethereal, electronic, experimental, even poppy turns, and while we love it all, they don't have enough heft and darkness to their shows.
I mean by darkness, the shades & vibes of the Floydian circus that is DONDANTE.
I'm not saying i want a DONDANTE II....but....I'll take a heavy, bluesy, solo-ridden, effects-laden face scorcher or 6 on this record.
They always sound far too toned down on albums. We all know this.
Thats why I'd love to see them take new songs to a live environment and record a record like TIME FADES AWAY or NEW ADVENTURES.
No more of this trying to sound live, just cut it live!
Or embrace the studio as an instrument.
I'm fine either way, just no half stepping.
Jesus i want this album to be a towering masterpiece.

L*3 for this comment ericm. Lol
(For me, loved the CF Miami Jungle version (love those jazz chords) on first listens, it rocks much better than the single release version I assume you were referencing.)
I'm not expecting an album full of hard edge rockers with Brendan O as producer, just a guess based on recent project choices and results. Hoping I'm wrong. Still, expect there will be at least a few if not more new gems, because it's Jacket creating new songs. Every MMJ album, over 20-plus years, has them. Hard for me to find that guaranteed track record in any rock band.

I always struggle to describe to friends just learning of them why, or what song best represents why, the Floyd comparisons are often made. Lonn, that description of Dondante as a dark Floydian circus is just beautiful. I'm stealing it!

STEAL AWAY BROTHA!
Dondante is just getting better & better live btw.
OKAY I JUST LISTENED TO "TIME WAITED" for the first time. My 2 year old son is nestled in a bunch of blankets by us, it's a chill Sunday, my teams are winning and doing well, this song is good.
It's got some ear candy with the post-chorus Carl lead (live it'll kick ass more), and the piano sounds incredible...some kinda effect on it that sounds like beautifully broken dice being dropped.
I don't care what the songs sound like as long as MMJ really go for it...that said, I do want guitars to be in the main focus....but I also want it to be a Bo-driven record because I don't feel we've fully received that quite yet.....I was pleasantly surprised with TIME WAITED and judging by the past "first singles", this'll be a rather tame and pale preview for the entire record, so that's a GOOD THING.

This album is starting to sound really quantized....my worst nightmare....I'm officially worried with that buttrock riff.
1st short review
https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/album-reviews-ian-sinclair-march-10-2025
26 YEARS on from their debut, Louisville, Kentucky's My Morning Jacket aren't just still going strong, they are making some of the best music of their career.
Frontman Jim James has previously produced or co-produced every one of the band's albums, creating some of the biggest guitar rock of his generation — check out their great bear of an album It Still Moves. On their new record he has relinquished the producer's chair to Brendon O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen), who has brought a poppy concision and crisp sound to proceedings.
There are lots of hooks and catchy riffs, from Lemme Know with its '80s computer game-style electronica intro to the ancient-sounding piano riff (apparently a sample of country legend Buddy Emmons) that underpins the gorgeously pensive anthem Time Waited.
With great song following great song, it's an inspired set.
