Turning this band on to a few older local rock fans who simply have no idea. Plus the spouse for 3 of them.

As much as I'd love to see them sell out all 5 nights, it's nice to see scalpers/resellers losing money.

as of now i'm comfortable with just 3 shows, but the thought of a couple of weeknight shows at a half-filled palace intrigues me.....

Any recommendations about sightseeing and public transportation for Louisville? My wife and I will be staying near the venue without a car. Thanks in advance!

Sadly our only public transportation consists of infrequent, unreliable buses. We do have Uber/Lyft and some scooters available. Depending on exactly how close you are to the venue, the couple of blocks in its immediate vicinity are pretty walkable.

File it under sad but true - Pineapple summed up the transportation situation perfectly.  And turns out there is another traffic complication on Saturday to keep in mind, Derby Festival Marathon, which will close a bunch of streets until 4 PM in and around downtown and The Palace Theater (and elsewhere of course).  I found the full list, which you can see below, and it's going to make getting around difficult for sure.  There are a couple of walkable bridges over the Ohio River, and some restaurants/bars on the Indiana side, and while you are there the Falls of the Ohio River are fun to see if the river is down (not sure how safe it is these days though - probably fine during daylight).

Ticket time is 7:30, so add an hour for the opening bands and I'm guessing around 8:30 will be MMJ's general starting time.

First L'Ville shows I'll be missing in a while and love coming to your city but the timing just didn't work out. Have a blast and really looking forward to hearing some 1st hand reviews.

For night 2:
-It looks like they cut a song after the 21min Dondante. The guitar tech brought out a guitar and then took it back a couple songs later.
-What was Tom playing after the first part of Run Thru...what it the theme from Severance?
-I wonder if the recording is going to be incomplete due to the PA going out.

as much as i love this band, as great as they are, i still have trouble with Jim's self-indulgent, pointless, meandering noodling. Dondante was 15 minutes of greatness and 6 minutes of "get on with it, Jim!" it's become a perfect bathroom break for me.
losing the PA for a few minutes sucked, but gave us one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments with that unplugged Bermuda Highway. glad i was close enough to hear it.

Agree.  The 'noodling' (which is my classification for every Dead jam, lol) almost always finds an awesome riff they slide into, but yep it took awhile there last night.

ericm would have appreciated the 10 min PA drop and these guys not even flinching, playing straight through it and I assume ad libbing in the acoustic Bermuda Highway.  That was incredible, Jim straining to be heard, the crowd helping with the chorus.  PA kicking in just before it ended was perfection.

What other rock band tries to play through that?  Without MFing the sound crew or something too.

I think it may have been a venue issue I overheard that the whole Palace lost internet connection when the PA went out.

Haha, yes I would've totally dug that. Live rock and roll and pulling that off like the pros they are. I've seen singers/bands just lose it over things like that and not be able to handle it. Not our guys.

I said it elsewhere when I heard about this but it sounded like L'Ville got another "Under the Overpass" moment. Still one of the best and coolest live music things I've ever been present for in all my years of going to shows.

Honestly, I am down for the noodling.

Can't believe they covered "I Could Never Take the Place" again.  The one at Iroquois seemed like a once in a lifetime thing.  One of my favorite Prince songs.

They played it on 9-11-12, first night of the Wiltern run, so I have seen it twice. That also was the infamous Benghazi day.

War was great, really great.

Dancefloors may have been as good as Bonnaroo this past summer. Was guessing that they closed with this.

Seems like they are having a blast.  All the covers have been fantastic.

Oh yeah. Best setlist of the weekend for me.  Short show length, did not care.

Cobra, War Begun, two Stones covers and a stellar Dancefloors show closer is killer.  Aluminum Park and Easy Morning Reb were off the charts, great versions.  Loved I Needed it Most, especially it getting the quiet crowd respect that beautiful Jim solo deserved.

Setlist was so good, TMP2 is almost forgotten!  Hell as the opener?? Damn

Long time lurker, first time poster. Last night was possibly my favorite set in 42 shows, potentially rivaled by RR 2016 N1.

Heavy show with almost no filler (sorry Half a Lifetime).

It's been said but the band has been on another level these last few years!

Back home after the first three nights.  We're still processing everything, but Saturday's power fun and everyone's response was crazy.  It reminded me of my first Jerry Garcia Band show, which was also the first time I saw Jerry (no Dead for me up to that point).  The power went out after 4 songs, so the band left the stage, but everyone remained in their seats.  Then some guy came out and said the power is out so it's time to go home, when everyone started yelling ACOUSTIC, so buzzkill guy figured out that we weren't leaving and left the stage.  But he came back out after a few minutes and literally said "Jerry did not bring his acoustic guitar", which was of course not received well by the crowd who started yelling BULLSHIT.  We decided it was time to leave, and I didn't see Jerry again until my first Grateful Dead show several years later.

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/jerry-garcia-band/1981/orpheum-theatre-boston-ma-23dd08f3.html (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/jerry-garcia-band/1981/orpheum-theatre-boston-ma-23dd08f3.html)

Moments like this with MMJ are priceless exactly because they try to handle randomness with grace and dignity, and there are not many bands who carry themselves like that.

I was told the PA went out because a fire alarm tripped — and that the fire alarm was triggered by too much stage smoke. Carl seemed to have noticed right away that something happened but it took Jim a little longer because he could still hear sound through his in-ear buds. It took a few minutes to reset the power, during which Jim graced us with Bermuda. It was definitely a show for the ages!

Something during Lemme Know caused a surge- after the song, Jim came to the edge of the stage and told Erica it was all the 'hey's and to pass it on lol. I'm not an electrical engineer so idk, but that acoustic unplugged Bermuda Highway is a memory I will cherish forever.

I've been hoping for Rollin' Back live for years. Part of the reason I had to go all five nights was for the chance to hear Rollin' Back, so it was the obvious highlight for me!!

AEIOU and I Will Be There When You Die were my other best moments.

Still so many songs available for tonight. Hoping to hear Master Plan, At Dawn and Phone Went West tonight.

Wishing for Just One Thing and Where To Begin. ❤️

Good chance you get them. How crazy is it they can do a five night no repeat run and still have so many good tunes yet to be played?

I'm telling ya, we've got to get them to do an Allman's like Beacon March run. Take the whole month or most of it every year like they did and do 2-3 shows then one night off.

The Allmans started their run with four shows and eventually got it up to the teens with I believe 19 shows being their high water mark in 99. From then on it was usually around 14 shows every March until their last shows in 2014.

Man how I looked forward to March and the Allmans. It was an incredible 25 year run. With only the early years of that run starting in 89 not being consecutive years. Once they hit 96 it was every year! I'd love to see our guys take over the Beacon every year like that!

This is an excellent suggestion.

And unlike the Allman Brothers, they could probably do at least 7-8 shows and manage no repeats! Their catalogue and 3-4 covers a night would just about do it 😉

The interest to buy tix would be helped by 'I gotta see my white whale' obsessions.  lol

Yes, all those! A good chunk of these are likely too -

Slow Slow Tune.
Victory Dance
Wonderful
Golden
Nashville to Kentucky ( this has to be played right?)
Waterfall
Evil Urges
Only Memories

Lots left.  Some regular big covers still out there too.  My white whale is Hillside Song!

getting home around midnight and having the alarm go off at 3:50 for work kinda sucks, but i'm glad i pulled the trigger on nights 4 and 5.  doesn't look like either night will sell out, but tuesday certainly wasn't just "half-filled".  good crowd, if a bit more subdued.

i need 4th of July tonight. and sooner. and a beatles or who cover. and i need them to start at 8:45 and finish at 11. 2 openers and starting around 9:30 is no good for weeknight shows.

It doesn't have to be one or the other. I'm be fine with both, and will be in L'Ville for the next run no doubt. Bummed to have missed this one but I just couldn't work out the timing.

One of the great things about the Allman's runs were it was always in March. No speculating about would they do it or when. I met so many people over the years who took some vacation time, or did a few weekends in March type of thing.

They would plan early for flights and places to stay, and it didn't matter which ones, you knew you'd get shows. That whole area on the Upper  East side was an Allmans cottage industry for the month. Such a fun time no matter when or how many shows you did, and it worked for so many because it wasn't a hit or miss small run.

They were the first band I knew who did a residency and they were ahead of their time with that. I would love to see our guys do something like that every year, whatever month and however many shows. Eight over two weeks would be a great start with a chance to add more.

Great idea.  I hope they do something like this one day too.

Quote from: LBSUNFLWR on Apr 30, 2025, 07:28 AMI've been hoping for Rollin' Back live for years.

It also took me forever to hear Rollin Back.  I knew it was guaranteed at an It Still Moves show, but I heard it before that in Chicago at a regular show.  I was pleasantly surprised!

Steely Dan started doing a Beacon Residency as well and their's was usually in October and not as long. At first I think it's was something like 2 three night runs on consecutive weeks but evolved into more after a couple of years.

They  had some interesting concepts though on how they did each year. They would usually do three whole album nights plus other songs each night and they announced in advance what album would be done on which night. Pretty cool as it gave fans the chance to see their favorite or get a song they had been chasing.

Then the other nights were usually a Greatest Hits night, and they did  an internet request night. If you chose that night, they'd send a follow up email with around 25-30 songs, and each person got to pick 20, with the band saying they would play the 20-22 most requested.

I was fortunate to be only about 90 easy minutes away from NYC and over the years got to see my favorite five albums, the internet night and a greatest hits night. Plus I did  Aja and The Royal Scam twice over the years.

Sorry if this hijacked the thread a bit and don't want to take anything away from what I know was an incredible L'Ville run. It was just something I've been thinking about and would love to see our guys do. Hell,I'd love if they did it in L'Ville as well, and was something we could count on say every April.

Wow! That's pretty awesome.
Fantastic week, first time in Louisville. You locals have yourselves a very cool town, really enjoyed it.

Still can't believe they didn't do Nashville to Kentucky.  Tonight I Wanna Celebrate was another.  Stellar setlists though, thought N5 was tied with N3 for best shows.  N5 energy was off the charts all night.

Agreed. Sunday and Wednesday were my favorite nights.

Glad you enjoyed Louisville. I moved here 13 years ago and I've always loved it here.

In addition to Nashville to Kentucky, I was very surprised they skipped Welcome Home.

We had a great time in Louisville as well.  Even though we live close we really don't spend much time there because our families are from Cincinnati, so having an extended stay in Louisville is rare (maybe the only other times were for Forecastle).  The new thing we did this time which I really enjoyed was to check out the lock on the Ohio River which is just west of downtown.  It has a nice observation platform for nerds like me, and it also has a cool bridge you can drive or walk over that goes over the whole lock system to an island where they do maintenance on stuff like the huge doors for the locks.  We also went to the Falls of the Ohio, which is always a good time.

I sure hope this becomes a tradition, but my vote is to get away from Derby Week a bit further because everything (hotels and travel at least) is more expensive, and the marathon Saturday definitely had things tangled up a bit (and the hotel we were in was 100% sold out).  Best part is we only had to miss one day of work (Wednesday) which is awesome.

Thanks again to the band for putting their shows up on Nugs.  We've been enjoying listening them very much, and just listened to night 5 today for the first time.  It's hard to pick a favorite show or moment, but Still Thinkin jumps out to me because it was super fun to hear live finally, and I have always wondered who that song is about (and what they think when they hear it and/or if they can even stand to listen to it).

Next show for us is in Newport for Betsy's birthday  and I broke down and got Atlanta tickets for the last two shows of 2025 because why the hell not.  See y'all at the shows!
