Go ahead and share your favorite MMJ track with everyone :)
Hmmm...that's a tricky question.
Do you mean-
Of all time?
Right now?
Acoustic?
Live?
Right now, my fav is "Run Thru"...that song kicks ass. Of all time, I couldn't choose! There's too many freakin' awesome tunes...
my fav at the moment is Steam Engine
but that changes quite frequently
just shout out some of your favs. you know ones that you always go back to.
Hmm, isn't there already a topic about that? I posted a 20-track best-off there, check it out.
"Phone Went West" and "Nashville to Kentucky" ("take me out..." and the way Jim sing it is my favorite MMJ line).
By the way, "Phone Went West" is probably one of my favorite live songs ever. They did it both in Chicago and in Headliner's on Saturday, not exactly the same both times but just as amazingly good. They must go on for 6-10 minutes and you still wish they'd continue for another five minutes. A great, great song by a great, great band.
I've always had a thing for "By My Car." I can't really imagine Jim kicking anyone's head in. But I totally know how he feels.
I love "The Way That He Sings," especially live.
Just Because I Do.
Hey, id have to say Heartbreakin man is the best mmj song ever, its the song that got me into mmj
right now it's Butch Cassidy
Today its phone went west, yesterday was the way that he sings tomorrow?....................................
QuoteToday its phone went west, yesterday was the way that he sings tomorrow?....................................
The Way That He Sings.
By the way, are you going to see MMJ in Manchester on 22 Nov?
definitely "the way that he sings"
I have pondered this deeply, and my favorite MMJ song of all time has to be "It's About Twilight Now".
It seems like yesterday that the crowd at Headliner's had their hair sheared off by the brute force of this song...it was a show for radio broadcasters, and I think the audience expected a Jim solo acoustic show. Instead, they got a full on, monster sized, ass whompin', molten slab of igneous rawk that pummeled the very soul of the crowd into beautiful submission. I'll never forget the looks on the faces of the folks around me. Absolute awe, shock...
tough call.
for me, i guess "i will be there when you die".
I get a different reaction to this song; its raw and naked and perfect.
Hard question. But i think "i will be there when you die" Or "Bermuda highway" ,at the moment.
Hello Angie, yes I'll be there on the 22nd, are you going? sorry it took so long to reply I don't get online often.
QuoteHello Angie, yes I'll be there on the 22nd, are you going? sorry it took so long to reply I don't get online often.
Yes Im going...
Another vote for "I Will Be There When You Die" here. See my post about the Denver show for a neat story about Jim playing that song for me.
I also really love "Bermuda Highway" and "Strangulation"
Live, it's that "One Big Holiday"-"I Will Sing You Songs" combo and "Phone Went West" that really get me.
"I Think I'm Going to Hell" the version of Jim singing it in a very colorful locale in Holland just blows me away, especially after the cool spinning interveiw about his dreams.
'I Will Be There When You Die'....for sentimental reasons....
That's just a horrible question I think. It's like choosing between a sugar pie or a chocolate bar. Both are so sweet, so it's impossible to choose which one is the sweetest. But if you point a gun on my face, then I would say I will be there when you die. Yeah, not original, I know, but it's a hell of a song with so much emotion put in it.
I am realy new to MMJ but am quickly falling in love with all the songs - right now my favorites are "O Is the One That is Real" and "Come CLoser." Does anyone else think that the guitar line in "O is the One" is reminiscent somehow of Del Shannon's "Runaway?" Or maybe the guitar just reflects the melody of that classic song. Something 50's-ish there. I listen to it over and over.
No doubt.. for me...
When I heard " I will sing you songs " the first time live a couple years back... it destroyed me.
Right about 8-9 minutes in where Jim starts wailing and they're playing that awesome spooky wonderful riff... I get chills every time.
Hard to pick just one though.
Steam Engine
the whole god damn lot.yeeeeeeeeeehhaaaaaaa
War Begun
Phone Went West
X-Mas Curtain
Run Thru
Live and Studio!
Oh and don´t forget THE BEAR!!!!!!!
it has to be either the dark or picture of you
Last night it was 'Run thru' that did it for me. I haven't been able to get it out of my head ever since.
Easy mornin' rebel, fer now
QuoteLast night it was 'Run thru' that did it for me. I haven't been able to get it out of my head ever since.
(in evil laugh)
MUHAHAHWHAHAHHAHA-HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I knew the day would come when this song would be someone else's favorite...
John did you forget me? Run Thru has been my new favorite song since before the new album came out. It's the best rock and roll song since...well..in a very long time.
Right now it's "Just one thing", a song that keeps flowing in and out of my (sub)consciousness and also a song that describes my life at the moment quite well... :)
There's a funny thing about that song: I remember hearing it first through John's FTP-server. Back then, there was a studio version, but it was only available on a Darla compilation CD I could never get a hold on. Around that time, I discussed that song on this Forum, saying I really wished they'd put it on the new album, but I thought they wouldn't. Then the album came out, and guess what? There are days when I like to think I'm a tiny little bit responsible for that... ;)
Ah, nothing beats self-flattering... ;D
O,
"Just One Thing" is probably my second favorite MMJ song. Beautiful and dare I say quite passionate.
-- Catt
mmmmmm...
*deep thoughtful pause
I think...
it would have
to be
Mahgeeta...at the moment...i think it was how f**king amazing live it was that has out it up there...for the moment...
although Picture of You, Lowdown, One Big Holiday, Run Thru...etc.
It would have to be the song that got me into MMJ - The Bear.
But It Still Moves has some gorgeous tracks-- Mahgeetah, I Will Sing You Songs, Run Thru, Just One Thing and Steam Engine are exceptional, as are others...
QuoteJohn did you forget me? Run Thru has been my new favorite song since before the new album came out. It's the best rock and roll song since...well..in a very long time.
No way dude! ;D Of course not.
The answer to that question is easy:
Oh... Mahgeetah... Mahgeetah
I've decided to go with the theory that Jim is singing about his gee-tar.
Anyway, before I heard that song, it was "The Way that He Sings." Before that, it was "Come Closer."
Every song, for every different emotion I feel.
A lot of songs can still be made.
right now it's 'Steam Engine', but all time fave still rests with 'The Way That He Sings'.
Genius.
right now my favorite is mageetah. but i haven't heard any of their songs except what woxy plays. that'll change in january tho! woo..anyhow..
I got hooked on the jacket from the song I will be there when you die but then i fell in love with the bear followed by heartbreakin man and then lowdown, proceding with just about every song on it still moves but my all time greatest that i cant live without... hmmmmmmmm... it has to be...I will sing you songs because of when jim james lets out that long enchanting howl during the most amazing drum guitar bass keyboard compilation known to man bar none at about 8 er 9 minutes into the song. Damn they can make amazing melodies.
Yeah that is one amazing song.
why weren't there more votes for "picture of you"?
I can't go to sleep because I can't stop singing that chorus.
"Soooooorrrrryy agaaiiinnnnn"
"Soooooorrrrryyy"
Today i've had O is the one that is real going through my head continuously. But I think i will always fall back on The way that he sings. Then again, i'm a mmj newby and haven't heard all their stuff, i'm quickly picking the stuff up though. I'm very grabbed by them!!
I would have to say that my (current) favorites are "Phone Went West" (after hearing it live, it made a huge jump up) "Run Thru" (same for it) and "Mahgeetah".
I just recently got into the band and I'm loving what I hear. I appreciate just about all of their songs and I like "O is the one that is real, picture of you, run thru, at dawn, and the cliche 'the way that he sings'". I'd really like to see them in concert but they traveled to dallas too early for me to know about them. Hopefully I will have the opportunity in the future.
I Will Be There When You Die
Steam Engine
Phone Went West
I totally agree with kevin. Those are the ones that are the best, in the end. Oh, and "O". :)
i love "Weeks Go By Like Days" off the Darla 100 compilation......
Phone went west live is so awesome I'd have to say its #1 ...Hearbreakin' man is right behind it though.
Going with One Big Holiday and Lowdown....
There are a lot of great songs, but I often can't help getting the feeling those songs would be even better if they weren't stretched so much and Jim starts to, with all respect, whine. Phone Went West would be a superb song if it was 2 minutes shorter, Run Thru should stop after the middle section, Steam Engine sounds like a broken record at the end,...
Anyway, my favourites for now: One big holiday, Golden, X-mas curtain, If it smashes down.
I don't often like extra long songs, but Phone Went West - I never want it to stop. Especially when I've heard it live. There's something about this band, that voice, that makes the music very personal, makes me feel it's "just for us" and want it to go on forever. Not sure if I'm making this very clear - it's late at night here.
Lowdown
The Way That He Sings
Next week it will be two different songs.
I like Phone Went West-oh.
Always gets me going o.
QuoteLowdown

I know exactly what you mean. Different songs for different days and moods. I always come back to these two as well. Maybe it's because they are the first ones that attracted my attention.
QuoteI like Phone Went West-oh.
Always gets me going o.
Sheer poetry ;)
I don't have much time listening MMJ, but from what I've heard I have to say Steam Engine's me current favourite.
Since the 'At dawn' demos are being released again, more people will get to know 'Chills'. What a great song that is... And I still absolutely love 'If all else fails', another song that disappeared into obscurity for reasons I cannot imagine.
"Demo discs" - are you referring to the extra disc that was included with the original release of At Dawn?
I believe that is the one.
QuoteI believe that is the one.
Yep.
It's not a favourite song, more a favourite sound - I love hearing the guitarist's fingers move on the strings. It always makes me think "that's real music". I don't know if there's a technical term for it. The beginning of "Hopefully" is an excellent example.
QuoteI love hearing the guitarist's fingers move on the strings.
I know what you mean, doctor. I remember really loving that sound when I was first learning guitar, and I was listening to Dylan's album "Good As I Been To You" (one of my favorites of his). That sound of fingers sliding on steel is all over that album. :)
Thanks. I'll look that one out.
i think the first the song i heard was "one in the same" - jim james' voice was so different to anything else, so captivating...
but of course like others said, it changes like the mood, like the days... right now, it's "come closer" and "i needed it most".
My favorite song this far...
Come Closer...
Emotional attachments to that one Bigtime! ;)
Come Closer
so i slave away.
on the floor and walls for a day.
buy you the beer can you pay.
get emotional each time they say your name.
oh soldier you look so strong.
who held you that you fought so long.
who told you that you left me amazed.
there's something left i gotta say.
how long can you stay?
i been waitin all day...
i been meltin away...
just to send off with you.
come closer. come closer.
so today. i wont call anyone for change.
"toes 'cross the floor," hear it play.
good at holdin back at eatin away your legs.
come closer.
oooh boo laa tooo. x3. come closer
Great song,MK. ;)
I wonder if MMJ has any idea what their music is capable of...figure that one out :-*
QuoteI wonder if MMJ has any idea what their music is capable of...figure that one out :-*
Don't know if they do, but some of us definately do ;)
Welcome to the gang, MagicKiss
QuoteI wonder if MMJ has any idea what their music is capable of...figure that one out :-*
I don't think they should. The magic might get lost if they'd become too aware of it... Let 'em just make music. More! More!
Come closer is a great song but let me tell some of you jacket heads something you may not be aware of. A few years back, MMJ did a Christmas song set on Louisville's local WFPK. They did come closer w/ other lyrics
"Oh Santa you look so strong. What held you that you took so long? ... etc. etc.
awesome
finishing my point.
It was live.
they had the christmas sleigh bells in the back ground and it was ... a MOMENT.
so much so I was semi-dissapointed when they released the CD w/ other lyrics.
But back to the point. This is a hard topic. "I will sing you songs" and "War Begun" are still some my faves but it's like Zepplin, how can you name one song?
See you all at the concerts!!
I really enjoy when they close with "phone went west". It is always a great way to end the show. And, it is played at almost every show I have seen. I really enjoyed when they opened a show with "ATDawn" when opening for the Doves. I gues my favorite album song is "Death is the Easy Way". Not a popular choice but very overlooked. Alchohol makes me tired at times too. But, the first song I ever heard was "AT Dawn", and it was amazing. What a band.

That's really good to hear. It's my absolute favourite. We'll be seeing the band twice ::) ::) in July, and I hope they play it both times.
A song I've been listening to a lot lately, but haven't taken much notice of before is "Honest Man" I'm growing to love it. It shows just how versatile the guys are.
your ass it draws me in?
bermuda highway all the way

You know, words are so common anymore and people say
things like "great" and "fantastic" and others too
much. I've discovered there is really not many words in our language that can describe the music this band makes, or better yet, the music that Jim creates. A friend of mine always says "They can do no wrong." Well, it took hearing alot of different recordings by them to make me realize he is so right. I'm really "in to" 'Come Closer.'
Listen to this song again, my friends. Listen to the way he
says the word 'closer.' He is FEELING it!!! It's not
just a word in a lyric to a song.... you can feel it
come from inside of him. 'It's just the way that he
sings!!!' How else can you put it?! He could sing
about dog crap and make it beautiful. That's a little
exaggeration, but you get what I'm saying. With CC, I
can picture a woman slowly strolling across a wooden
floor to him when he beckons 'come closer.' I can SEE
them move slow together to this tune... maybe in their
own slow-dance. It's beautiful. It makes you feel
beautiful. It brings smiles and thoughts of future
embraces and slow dances. When will the world see
that this man/band are genuis??? ???
I too am into "Come Closer" again, and I echo your words on this song. Pure genius, just beautiful...this song got me through some really tough times during my wife's surgery 2 years ago.
QuoteWhen will the world see

Can I get an amen?! Amen, sister.

Hope all is well now, johnconaway. :)
This music has brought me alot of comfort, as well. It also brings a feeling of hope. I've always known this type of music was out there, but never experienced it until MMJ came into my life. Some may say I'm silly for putting so much emphasis on this music, but if it gets me through the lonely nights, takes away the blues, and makes me smile through all the craziness, it deserves my praise. I can't help but think of myself as that "soldier" he sings about in 'Come Closer.' Soldiers sometimes have it rough, but they march on, come-what-may, with their heads held high. Plus, if anybody can find anything in this fricked-up world to bring release, I say hang onto it.
I can't get enough of Golden. Just love everything about it. The slide guitar the chugging drums and of course Jim's fantastic vocals.[glb]TEXT[/glb]
By My Car could be the best song ever written.
QuoteI love "The Way That He Sings," especially live.
I agree on this one! At least right now it's my favorite!
Strangulation!
I'm still pretty new to the MMJ scene, but I haven't had a song grab me like it has in awhile!
hey tameegee, they got this thing out now called Larazepan..
for god sakes, it may not be their best song, but Lowdown is obviously the best live tune ( see bonarro ) and really don't commit suicide or anything
Pretty new to MMJ myself. Just saw them in Atlanta, and all the songs were really good, but "Mahgeeta" was like a religious experience. I found myself running around the venue like a madman bouncing off the walls. Of course, "One Big Holiday" was totally badass too.
Let's be careful out there, people.
I'm a big fan of the boys and their music. I'd never speak against anything I've heard them play or say about their work....
But please listen to Greggy!!!
Especially on that "Come Closer" one... That sucker can get you in a LOT of trouble! ;) :-/ :'( ??? ;)!!!!
Use with caution and at your own risk! ;)
Quotehey tameegee, they got this thing out now called Larazepan..

HA! I could probably change my favorite MMJ song every day or so, cause they're all good. Seeing them live in Nashville on Sunday stirred things up for me. (This was my FIRST live show of theirs, BTW.) One Big Holiday was spectacular! "I Will Sing You Songs" is tops for me now after seeing them live, but, Gosh! There is no bad MMJ song. Even the simple lyrics of 'Run Thru' made for a kick-ass jammer! This band is wonderful. No Larazepan needed ;)
its gotta be bermuda highway for me.
everytime i hear the chorus i get goosebumps.
Gee, after thinking long and hard I can only come up with a "tops" list:
The Bear
The way that he sings
Bermuda Highway
Dancefloors
Run Thru--awesome riff! 8)
Come Closer
2nd...
Bermudah Highway
3rd...
Lowdown
QuoteLowdown
"Ain't no need for repeatin'
Aw lovedawg can't ya see
you only gotta dance with me?"
fav. is totally aqua teen hunger force. that is a crazy show
I must admit lowdown is definitely on the high end of my list too!
:-*
Also really loving the new tune, I think its called "How could I know?" Very nice melody
agree with that, I do. :D
as I follow this thread I believe it is next to impossible to pick out one MMJ song from all of them and say "that's it! numero uno to the max!" maybe...
Quoteas I follow this thread I believe it is next to impossible to pick out one MMJ song from all of them and say "that's it! numero uno to the max!" maybe...
I think you're probably right.
But for me, today, it's got to be Phone Went West. I'm listening to it now and I'm right back to the sights, sounds and tastes of the last time I heard it live. Perfection.
Maybe steam engine is the best song they ever recorded. It just gets to you after a while. Majestic, epic, flowing naturally from start to finish.
Take your money and your drugs...

yes! I know exactly what you mean--connections between the recorded media and your warm memories of live experiences. I love that!
HEY!
No way I could match out my FAVOURITE All-time song from this phantastic band (fist time I heard it--->thunderstruck)
the bear
Maagetha
Lowdown
by my car
run thru
and bermuda highway
are soo divine that it hurts sometimes!
I am so sorry they don't tour in Europe soon. Would be the first band I would travel hours for to see them.
