what are some other bands y'all listen to? i came to MMJ via the alt.country route. I have been listening to Mark Olson's (formerly from Jayhawks) solo stuff lately. His album Pacific Coast Rambler with his band the Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers is excellent! Vic Williams voice is an aquired tast, however.
Have a look on 'Off Topic Ramblings'.
You'll find the answer there.
Nice to meet you Chinacat. You got a friend by the name of 'Sunflower' by any chance?
Good call on Mark Olson and the Creekdippers! I love My Own Jo Ellen!
Pretty much listen to anything Black Crowes related (New Earth Mud, Rich Robinson's solo work, etc.), The Steepwater Band, Wilco, Jayhawks, Proud Mary, NMAS, Mofro!

I came to their music after seeing them play in 1999 here in Louisville. My musical tastes have encompassed a lot of different genres, but I mainly am into ROCK with a capital R...such as Guided by Voices, Foo Fighters, Mooney Suzuki...
classic stuff as well...i was born and bred on Zeppelin, CCR, the Stones...shoot, it's all good!
I came upon My Morning Jacket because I downloaded The Tennesse Fire and by the time I got to The Bear I was hooked for life. So don't feel bad about me downloading the album because If I hadn't I might have never got into the band, Now they will get hundreds of my dollars (through shows, and T-Shirts, My endless pursuit of The Tennessee Fire on Vinyl...Does anybody know if this even exists? Any way some of my favorite bands.
Pearl Jam
Sonic Youth
The Cure
Nirvana
The Mars Volta

went to see martin sexton last night here in atlanta. pretty good show. he's got an incredible voice and does quite a bit with just an acoustic guitar and some effects.
I came to them more via the "jam band" route.

Finally! Someone mentioned the Truckers!
I've been listening to mostly DBT and MMJ for the last 2 years. MMJ only came in the picture around Christmas. A friend got me copies of "At Dawn", "The Tennessee Fire" and "It still moves". "It still moves" has gotten the most play, but the other 2 have picked up some spins from me recently.
I saw my first MMJ show last week in Nashville, so I'm still pretty excited about that. (They need to do another SouthEast tour soon, but I'm sure that's been said already.) :)
I also got into Slobberbone via the Truckers Yahoo list.

And on and on and on.......
I've edited this down a bit, cause these are the only ones I wanted to mention.
Jayhawks (kick ass, you make me feel so bluuuuue, why don't you stay behind)
Gillian Welch (Hell Among The Yearlings...need I say more?)
The Band (just saw Last Waltz again the other night, Neil Young's "Helpless" makes you want to kill yourself...maybe that's just me...)
Replacements (better when they were drunk...pre-All Shook Down...Westerberg kind of went egotistical after that)
Jane's Addiction (I'm fucking comin down the mountain alright! And I am indeed one of many children/I'm holding it back/It hurts so bad/Just went outta of my head and I say AHH/CASH IN)
Nanci Griffith (I thought I was the only one who listened to her...Loves on sale tonight at this five and dime...beautiful song...Heard a bootleg of it once, wherein she described that the "ding" of the Woolworth's elevators inspired the song...Listen for the "ding" of her guitar string, probably the D)
Leo Kottke (never heard him, but the artist that draws "Get Fuzzy" loves him)
John Hiatt (I have his Slug Line album on vinyl pretty good)
John Prine (how valid is his "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore" right now?)
One of my all time favorite John Prine lyrics:
"There's a big ole goofy man dancin' with a big ole goofy girl. Whoa baby it's a big ole goofy world"
The reference to the Woolworth elevators can be found on "A Fair Summer's Evening" which is a live recording Nanci made at a fairground in Austin TX.
Don't forget: "Wish I was ocean size They cannot move you No one tries..."
Leo Kottke is mostly known for his guitar prowess--he sound like he has 16 fingers when he really gets going!
Check out Hiatt's "Bring the Family" and "Slow Turning"
I like Westerberg's word twists--"Ya gotta remember whose suicide your on"
Leo Kottke is Awsome on the guitar! He's a little shy, and likes to play with his head practically inside the body, but he is sooo good at his style of music. His voice is kinda interesting to hear on some of his stuff... It's like he's been eatin' Thanksgiving dinner at "Alice's Restaurant" all his life! :D

Somebody give that girl a Kewpie doll!
;)thanks. I'll add it to my collection! :D
Now... Guillian Welch... Oh My God... She could sing megadeath and make it sound like it was an old mountain tune! What an insurmountable talent that woman has! And in her genre... I'd say she is almost as haunting as our boy Jimmy James is. Not really comparing the two voices, but the qualities that they both possess to grab the audience and make them want to keep listening. Just my mind rambling again... :-* ;)
I also enjoy Jimmy Dale Gilmore he has the "high plains empty haunting" quality to his vocals. You might like to check him out if ya haven't already.....
Quote;)thanks. I'll add it to my collection! :D

Oh so true! Hell Among The Yearlings is stunning but I like Time (The Revelator) even more. Every tune on that album is spellbinding!!!
A lot of Led Zeppelin and the Flaming Lips. Those're my two top pics. Other than that
Jack Johnson
Donavon Frankenreiter
Cake
Metallica (been forever since I've actually listened to em though, takes a really pissed off mood for me to get back into em)

Miss junkie: Buckethead was playing guitar for one self indulgent Axl Rose in the short-lived reformation of Guns 'n Roses. Axl claims to have fired him because "He was too unstable and unreliable"--what a hoot. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
;)Thanks baby... I knew you'ld know. :-*

aside from being the guitarist for GnR for a very brief period (he also supposedly recorded the album Chinese Democracy with them. This album has been slated for release for liek five years now, and still no mention. Axl's probably pissed that Velvet Revolver happened so he needed somehting to come back at them with) Buckethead has also played with the guys from Primus, and features Parliament's Bootsy Collins as the vocalist for a few of his albums.
He is one of the best riffers I've heard, and sometimes uses a technique referred to as "ten-finger tapping" to achieve this stellar a-tonal robot effect on his guitar. You sould give it a listen. If you like off the wall crazy shit, this sohuld be your bag. (Check out Bucketheadland 2 for some truly disturbing fun)
How come nobody mentioned Gillian's "Revival" cd??? This one got me hooked!
I also forgat to mention in my list one of my all time favs ::) (don't know what I was thinkin') RY COODER!!!! Another awesome fill-in-instrument-here artists.
"How come nobody mentioned Gillian's "Revival" cd"
Well, didn't think of it...;)
"RY COODER!!!!"
I know I will be ashamed of this, but I can't connect the dots... I know the name and I feel certain I'll know the music, but my brain just can't seem to put the two together. Help?! :-/
Check out "Into The Purple Valley" a collection of dusbowl-era classic music. I especially like his version of Leadbelly's "On a Monday". Most recently he was instrumental in putting together "The Buena Vista Social Club" motion picture and soundtrack. I remember him playng on the old Ralph Macchio movie "Crossroads" and the soundtrack for the movie "Paris, Texas". Other yummy cds: "Paradise and Lunch" and "Chicken Skin Music"--tasty!
I've been listening a lot to Kool Keith's Black Elvis.
It's Outrageous!
Thanks. I'll check out "Into the Purple Valley" , and I'm familiar with the Crossroads movie music. Liked it quite a bit if I recall correctly. :-*

QuoteI could keep going, i'll stop there. I know I probably left some important ones out
no, no...don't stop. what are the important ones left out here?
James Marshall Hendrix pehaps? ::) (or maybe Led Zep???)
I've been listening to a lot of Bob Marley lately; I figured my newborn, Abe, would dig it. I've heard that babies like reggae. Sure enough, he loves it. I go for long stretches when I don't pull out my Marley cd's, but each time I do, I am blown away. Man, he is the King.
I was surprised to find out Abe likes Buju Banton, too. I thought the gruff voice would scare him. But no.
