Title: MMJ tribute album
Post by: corey on Jul 22, 2004, 10:00 AM
Hi all,
I had the idea to do this and thought that it would be a fun thing to do in the fan community. I put together a fan tribute album for the Drive-By Truckers last year (and I'm doing another one soon) and we had shitloads of fun in the process. The Beck tribute that I tried putting together kind of fell apart.  :(

Here is how it would work:
You record your own version of one of MMJ's songs. Record it by yourself or with a band. 4-track ity or do it in a studio.
It doesn't really matter how you get it recorded. Obviously, it would be better for everyone if it were of high quality, but some of the more charming tunes from the DBT tribute were sort of lo-fi.
When you are done with your track, you have several options:
You can put it on CD and send it to me in the mail. I'll post my e-mail address here later when some of you have your tracks ready. You can save it as a SHN or FLAC file and host it somewhere for me to download.
There are probably some other options but I can't think of them right now.
When I have them all compiled, we can put together some artwork and send them around B&P style or maybe we can host the files and the artwork on John's FTP. We distributed the DBTs tribute CD both ways...

What do you all think?

When your tracks are done, I would like to get some basic info from you all... like the name of the artist/band and who played which instruments and other stuff like that...

If you're interested in submitting a song, put your song submission here. I would prefer not to have several versions of the same song. I know that people will want to do some of the same songs, so why don't we claim 2 tracks? If I get 2-3 versions of the same song, maybe I can pick the track that will better suit the CD. And if you've submitted another track, then you still have a good shot of being on the final cut... I don't really want to cut anyone, so if you all have some other suggestions, let me know...

Who is in?  :)
I want to give "Just Because I Do" a shot...

This is a fantastic idea! I'm all over it.  I'm going out to by a little multi-track recorder this weekend anyway. Will you have the ability to transfer tape to cd? Let me know.... I don't wanna pick songs right now, though I know one that I would like to do is 'I needed it most'. ANyway, lets get this started!

'wiggum, I'd still like to do Lowdown if I can.  I shall do my best to try and record something else (I'll ask you first if it's taken), but, you know, me in my little room takes a loooooong time.

Anyhow, that's my one pick fer sure, and if it doesn't make the final cut, that's okay!  :)

This is effin' fun, and you are rock for organizing it!

I ain't a musician of any kind myself, but this is an AWESOME idea!!! A friend of mine has done a thing, well more than once actually, like this for Will Oldham a.k.a. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy a.k.a. Palace et al., and I have been thinking of doing this for the Gun Club quite a while ago when I had a little more time on my hands compared to nowadays. I, however, hadn't thought of this concerning My Morning Jacket so far ... Anyhow, let me know if there's anything I can do to get this project going!? What about advertising on From Nashville To Kentucky? It's a fan's website, and this will be a fan's tribute, right!?
Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: corey on Jul 22, 2004, 05:05 PM
Yes indeed. It is exactly a fan's tribute. It'd be great if you wouldn't mind haven't something on your page about the tribute once it's all finished. Maybe we can have a little blurb about each of the artists that participate or something like that.
And for now, maybe you can put something up there about it and link to this thread of the board if people need more info. Any help would appreciated.

Thanks!

A really cool idea, and in fact, I've been wanting to do a recording of a MMJ song myself for ages... I'm gonna record my own weird accoustic voice-guitar version of, yes, "O is the one that is real". It might take a while, though, since I don't have recording stuff myself, but I really wanna do it, so... Yeah! Looking forward to it. :)

Can any one teach me how to play guitar?  I want dibs on "Cobra," but I would feel guilty taking up 25 minutes of the CD.  My rappin' skills are so fresh that Cobra is right up my alley.  Also, if anyone needs more cowbell--I am your man.

O,
I figure I'll give everyone a couple of months to get their song recorded. I know that it can be tedious if you don't have your own gear. I'll post a deadline sometime soon.

I got an e-mail from Jason Carroll. He wants to do "Death is the Easy Way".

Let's have a rough deadline of Mid-September. I'll get more specific as it gets closer to time.

This is fun!

dang it EC.  you know i wanted to do Lowdown.
crap.
maybe we could have a male version and a female version.

or maybe i could pick something else.
lowdown is my favorite though... :(

I just made some arrangements, and it might even be finished within a week. :)

It's gonna be mighty cool, I made a whole new arrangement and I even added a little new part myself at the ending. And I'm very curious to see how you all do... :)
Title: Re: MMJ tribute album

HELLACIOUSC!!

You can do lowdown.  It was just that I've been working on it for a while (since 'wiggum mentioned this to me a few weeks back).  And I thought I'd have to get it done before I leave.

But if we have until mid-September, then that'll give me a week or so to get something together when I get back.

So you can have it.  (I can send you the chords if you think it'll be helpful, but I'm warning you, there's an F#- in there, and it's a bar chord, no getting around 'er.  It'd be good practise!)

OR, if you get something laid down, and you send it to me, I can mix harmony vocals on top of it, and then we can do it together.  That might be very fun, too.

I'll pick something else.  I'm really liking Chocolate and Ice right now, so something from that.  But not Cobra, because as much as I would like to think that I could do it, aint no way in hell.  And besides, I think it's picked.  (Good luck with that!)

Okay, sweet pea?  :)

'wig, I'm assuming that cover songs are not really playing the game properly?
Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: corey on Jul 23, 2004, 06:11 PM
It'd be best to stick with songs that MMJ have written. :)

Oh, and mid-September is just a rough deadline. If there are still a few people that are close to being finished, we can push it back bit.

I'd like to thank Ger for putting the info up on his site. Well, he's already been thanked, but I'd like for everyone else to know that it is appreciated.

I think it's a good idea to have a list of possible songs up there with info about the people or bands that are going to contribute. So if you have something that you want up there, let Ger know.

Hurray, I just recorded my version of "O"! It does sound pretty lo-fi, though, but I put some effects on top of it so now it sounds like it's coming through and old AM-radio, so it sounds lo-fi, but in a mighty cool way. It's all accoustic and I've put loads and loads of vocal harmonies in it... Anyway, I hope you'll like it.

Oh, and I would also love to contribute artwork. I'll try to make some MMJ-style photographs...

Sorry...but are you guys for real? I have to say I think you're taking this a little too far. It's one thing to like the band, but this is too much for me...this is WAY beyond the usual 'Yeah, these guys rock! Yeah!' posts that scare me away. Good luck though. I appreciate the enthusiasm but it just seems creepy and culty to me...

ummm yeah.  Pretty much every band messageboard does this.

Post by: corey on Aug 03, 2004, 05:03 PM
Garth, I'm sorry you feel that way... but having a message board just to post shit like "these guys rock" seems like a waste of bandwidth to me.

I think it's going to be pretty fun... and apparently Jim James thinks it's a pretty good idea too.

From the response that we've had so far, so do several other people...

Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: Garth69 on Aug 03, 2004, 05:46 PM
Like I said, good luck and have fun, but it still seems weird to me, like you're trying to latch onto the band somehow. My point of the 'these guys rock!' posts: basically it's one thing to continually post blankly positive messages NONSTOP, DAY AFTER DAY about a given band (which is a vast majority, at least 75% of what goes on here), but it's another thing entirely to record songs by the same band in the hopes that the actual band will hear them and have something nice to say. I'm sure Jim thinks it's a cool idea; so would I if they were my songs. But still...come on.

Oh come on, I'm sure they're not doing this just to get a nice word from the band or anything. Ever heard of the letters F U N? Don't analyze this so much, it's all about having fun :D
Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: SMc55 on Aug 04, 2004, 04:38 AM
Garth69's only saying what he feels, and that's OK, surely. He has said good luck and have fun, but that  he finds the idea a bit strange. I think the album's just a bit of fun. What I find creepy is the out of proportion offence taken at the merest hint of criticism of the band or anybody involved with it. Come on, we're all fans, but we're all different (thank god) and we don't all have to sing from the same hymn sheet.
Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: peanut butter puddin surprise on Aug 04, 2004, 05:43 AM
agreed, but to state that out of 9,639 posts there are 75% that are no more than affirmations of the band is silly.

(BTW, that's 7229.25, to be exact-get busy scanning them and prove me wrong)

I defend the band when I know for a fact that rumors, half-truths, or misunderstandings are being posted in the name of "criticism".  I defend the band when I hear unfair or uninformed criticisms. There isn't a damn thing wrong with that, nor is there anything wrong with being critical.  Just be truthful and/or informed about it, and imagine walking a mile in their shoes before dismissing my logic.

no love loss here, i'm just sayin'.

Yeah, I didn't mean to sound defensive. Sorry if it came across that way... Garth is entitled to his opinion and I respect that.

But yeah... the main reason that I started this thing was for F U N. It's just a good way for the fans to interact. At least, I think it is. I'm looking forward to hearing what you all record...

Opinions are fine, but it seemed rather "out of left field" to start saying putting together a tribute to a band which has given so many people pleasure is "cult-like".  You can quietly think people are weird without feeling compelled to throw bombs at their attempts at fun--tribute albums are made all the time so is it weird because MMJ is relatively "new".  I look forward to hearing what comes out of this project

One final word, and I'll get out of your way: please realize that I'm just as big of an MMJ fan as anybody here. I just think fan-dom to this degree is unhealthy. I'm glad to see them do well, but I feel like most of the people who post here have some deep, dire personal stake in the band's success, as indicated by tribute albums and non-stop positive postings everyday. Seriously, some of you must spend most of your day on this message board! I like coming here to see news and fan reviews and ask questions, but stuff like that is usually hard to come by, which is why I don't come around very often. I nearly gave myself a migraine rolling my eyes when I read somebody was pissed that Entertainment Weekly gave the new acoustic album 'only' a B rating. Seriously? Seems like a good review to me.
MMJ rocks, we know. Now can't you talk about something else?

some of us are never satisfied.  'nuff said.

i have a full time job and am very busy being an IT manager for a city gov't.  i post here all day as a distraction from being bored into tears at the thought of changing another print cartridge.  that's bad, somehow?

positive feelings are good.  if you knew me personally, you'd know I'm an angry motherfucker politically, so being in love with all things MMJ is my mental health break.

i have no "stake" in anything.  this is one of my hobbies. i love the bands music so much that it has a personal meaning for me, a concept that is missing from the shit music out there.  if this is bad, then I don't want to be good.

you are really reading too deeply into what is said here.

'wiggum, you just made everyone in this internet cafe think i'm weird.  prop that shit up on a chair.  you are terrific.

i am currently not recording anything, because i currently can not.  i did, however, try to pay props to mmj at an open mic in edinburgh, but i failed.  i failed so miserably, that it was funny.  i had my lowdown notes in my book for some reason, and because hellacious made me hand it over (heh, just kidding), i had to play it at least once.  but dudes, you can't even imagine a worse performance.  i sounded like a sheep because i was so nervous.  and people in edinburgh are loud, and i'm quiet.

sooooo, you know, hopefully i'll get something done when i get back.  if i don't make it to the big album, maybe we can release a single for the latecomers with possible remixes from the main album?  ;)

The final version is up at our website.

Evelyn is not real is covered and recorded.  WAW it sounds really nice.  I never would have thought we pulled this one together.  We played with a drummer who only touched the drums two times in his whole life.  A basist who learned the chords this very morning.  But hell hell hell, it sounds great and most important of all... It was great fun.

Being there and using this magnificent equipment (thx brecht), we also did a very fine version of Cortez the killer ( this is a neil young song, neil young...)If someone like to here this one, maybe I can send it to john to put it on the ftp, but I don't know if he still has some room for a eight minute version of cortez the killer.  (read: please, pretty pretty please with sugar on top)

Anyway, this idea was just great. Thx.

I have no problems with pushing the deadline back... especially if it means that we'll have more tunes. Hell, I still haven't even recorded my cover yet.  :)

So for those of you that are asking, let's shoot for the middle (or end) of October.
Once it's done, we can do B&P's and/or put them on the FTP if that's cool with Mr. Conaway.

What happened to hellacious'?

Oh, wiggum.  My computer woes.  Did you know that if you download a certain free spyware protection program that it can screw up your Windows XP?  I sure didn't.  Free software, my ass.

And there has been some serious craziness happening.

I'm so still in.

I'm gonna email you separate from this.  A deadline might help me get my ass in gear.

How come when I decided that all I wanted to do was focus on music that life seemed to make it so that I had to focus on everything BUT music?

That's kick ass O. For really doing it.. and sending it...twice. And to all of those in the process...good for you too.

I want to be in the Vol 2 a few years from now. I'm not nearly as creative to do a track for this one in earnest...and in a timely fashion. But someday.

What's the total # of tracks so far that are either done or almost done?

So I was thinking'... some of you have been pretty responsive and I haven't heard anything back from some of the other people that wanted to do a song. I sent out some follow-up e-mails last night, so I'm hoping to hear back from those.

So, when's the tour?
Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: EC on Nov 01, 2004, 07:02 PM
QuoteSo, when's the tour?

It starts next month.  We begin in Toronto at a joint called Stanley's, which is usually the home to KISS and Led Zepplin coverbands, alternating as a karaoke bar with the biggest selection of country tunes in the province.  From there we journey to Virginia where we're going to open for Billie Joe Shaver and Todd Snider.  Then we move to Alabama as the Drive By Truckers opening act.  From there we fly to Europe, and take Belgium and Holland by storm, pretending to actually be My Morning Jacket, finally making our way back overseas to bring peace and harmony among the fans there.  I'll play Jim, because we have the same hair, and I'm just gonna cover my face with it and wear a nudie suit or a t-shirt about someone loving me in Winnipeg, so no-one can tell it's me.  (Everyone knows that the Dutch just smoke pot all day and hang out in saunas, so I'm sure we can fool 'em pretty good.)  Hellacious can be Tommy, and 'wiggum can be Patrick.  (I have a wig you can borrow, 'wiggs.)  lfish and 'o' are gonna have to fight over Bo and Carl, but I don't mind letting other people take turns as Jim if they want to.  My friend has a special pedal from his old Peter Frampton cover band days that he said I could borrow.  I've notified everyone on my street to put their pumpkins in the freezer, so we've got that covered.  If anyone has any interplanetary travelling connections, that might help with the spaceship.  I have a few gobos left over from a show I did in the summer, so the rock and roll lights should be okay.  Our tour is going to end in Nashville.  We're going to play two venues:  Robert's and the Exit-In.  My rider won't say anything except that I will need a constant supply of Pabst in a can, and I don't mind carrying my own guitars.  Hellacious, did you remember to include that bit about making sure that every hotel room has an electrical outlet somewhere near the beds so that you can plug your fan in?  (;))
Oh yeah, we're going to do a Christmas Special (a version of Oliver, but way more fun) at the Actors Theatre of Louisville.  We're going to replace most of the existing songs ("Consider Yourself" will be replaced by "One Big Holiday", "Where is Love" will be transformed into "Lowdown", and "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two" will be taken out altogether, and "X-Mas Curtain" added for that holiday feel.)  As a treat for the kids, we're gonna give 'em chocolate syrup poured over ice, and interactive, multi-media booths equipped with answering machines will be set up during intermission so that kids can record their own voices and listen to them.  This event will take place on December 24th, so as not to make a difficult choice for people on the 25th, when Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic opens.

Does anyone know if you can get a live feed to an ultrasound machine?  John, it might be a great way to include the kids...

I think it's gonna be great.  Who's with me?  :)

I don't believe in PBR unless it's in a can, btw. I've had it in bottles and that's just blasphemous.

So far, I have these tracks:
Lowdown by HUtch and the Hookers
Bermuda Highway by EC
Phone Went West by Buddy
O is the one that is Real by O

Evelyn is not real by Lfish should be at my house any day now. I think there is another on it's way to me as well, but I don't remember. I'll have to go back through my e-mails and see.

Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: EC on Nov 02, 2004, 09:17 PM
Everybody is allowed to come on tour with us - we'll need a lot of help.  'O', of course you can sing the high parts.  We'll just have lots of helium balloons and angry women around if you get stuck in your lower register.

tundra, don't worry about your recording device.  Just concentrate very, very hard, and send your selection telepathically to 'wiggum.  He's very receptive.  It helps if you elevate yourself beforehand - takes away any feedback and self-made walls.

Now all we need is a jet...

How long will it take to do your version and send it to Ol'wiggum?  If it takes another two months, I guess your chances are rather small.  If it takes two weeks, well I guess we can wait another two weeks.

In the meantime, wiggy, is there anything else the rest of us can do to help you out?  Like, for example, is there going to be a physical "album", or will you be putting it out as a file transfer thing?  Do you need bios or anything like that?  If you are doing an "album" (ie an actual physical cd), would you like people to volunteer their burners and be responsible for sending out cd requests to their area?  (If there is such a need...)

Anyhow, just let us know what we can do...
Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: corey on Nov 14, 2004, 11:37 AM
Well...
I plan on putting it on John's server when it's done. I also would like to have people that can help send out CDs to the people that are bandwidth-challenged. SO, for those of you with broadband AND a burner, I may ask you all to send them out. I don't expect them to be sent around for free, so we'll probably take the B&P route.

If you have bios that you would like to send to Ger for the "From Nashville to Kentucky" site, please do so.

I have a couple of artwork submissions, so I'll probably choose one of those when it's all done. (I kind of have a favorite of the ones that have been sent to me).
I'll upload the artwork to John's server as well for the people that want to print it out. We'll probably ask Ger to host it on his site as well.

Hey Ol',

I've sent you a blank cd but I forgot to send you the franked enveloppe.  Can we sort something out?  Or I can download from John's server and print the artwork myself (and you can keep the cd) or we can sent it by post, but that will cost money.

I still haven't heard from a couple of the people, so I'm pretty much giving up on them. My friend that was supposed to record Hard Helmet is going to be in town for Christmas. He's going to come over and record it at my house, then it's in my hands from there... so we should have everything ready at the first of the year...

I'm thinking about loading mp3s on archive.org to make them available for everyone. I don't know the rules about that yet, but I assume there is some sort of copyright issue. If not, that will probably be the easiest way for everyone to get it. If we can't put it there, can someone host the mp3s for the folks that are FTP illiterate?

I'm gonna try to go ahead and put it together this weekend. It's still only 9 songs though. I was really hoping to get a 10th song, but my buddy and I didn't have time to record his track while he was in town last week.

(Maybe, if it gets done, we could put it on as a secret track, and that way YOU know we have ten, but...)

Ok everybody. I'm working on mastering the songs now. I have to go to work in a little over an hour, but I might be able to finish most of them. This thing should be done by this weekend... at least the songs part of it. We're still going to need artwork.

here's the thing. There are only 8 songs right now. I thought that we already had 9. I plan on recording "At Dawn" sometime this weekend, so that was supposed to be song #10, but it's only going to be #9.

Would you guys rather wait and add another song to make it ten, or go ahead and call it quits with 9?

Sweatboard, did you guys get anything done?

Okay, so do we need to rally for artwork and notes and stuff?

Do we need details of who played what, where it was recorded, funny stories involved in the making of...  why we chose the song?

Do you have a cover?  Would you like submissions?  Or are you just gonna host it on the ftp?

Also, do you need help with stuff, and if so, what kind of help do you need?

(that's the organizer me speaking, so you can just tell me to shut the eff up if you'd like!)

(Actually, don't.  I might cry.  :))

I want to use the picture of that lightbulb that you sent to me a while back. I don't know if I still have it or not. I'll check tonight when I get home.

I'm thinking that it should be titled "The Way That He Sings : Fans sing the songs of My Morning Jacket".

Once the artwork is done, it can be hosted on the FTP as well. I'm going to try to upload all of the songs to it this weekend. It would be really great if someone else could host them for the people that don't understand the FTP thing.
I may look in to hosting them on archive.org. I don't know what all goes in to that. Our old bass player put some of our songs on it, but I didn't ask him what he had to do to put them there...

Oh that's really good, too lfish.  Yeah!  I'm getting excited now!

wiggs, if you don't still have that picture, I've got it.  (If you decided to change the title, or whatever, I can do that, too.  I also just got a couple of cool new fonts, so... word.)

I can put mp3s for downloading on my website.  (I'm assuming that if I'm using too much bandwidth or whatever, that they'll let me know or something?)

I can also email songs to people's gmail accounts, or other accounts.  Or I can do transfers via msn if we schedule a "date".  heh.  I can also burn copies for people (which might be the nicest way - although, it'll take the longest.)  I guess the deal with that is that you mail a cd to me with a returned stamped envelope?  I could do that, too, yo.

And then what about the liner notes?  Would you like me to be in charge of compiling that, wiggs?  If you're mastering, you might have a LOT to do, so I could take everyone's words and just make them into an easy form to deal with.  If you'd like...

Word, dudes.  Fun is just around the corner!

1.  Names of people involved, and what they did
2.  Date and location in which your song was recorded
3.  The reason why you chose this song
4.  Any interesting stories related to what you did

Hmm, I'm still a bit nervous to post my email address, so if you'd like to pm me, then I'll send it to you.  Does that work for everyone?

Okay, I also just im'd everyone except buddy.  Does he have a different board name?  I can't seem to find him...

Word, rocker.

Okay, I think I've been in touch with everyone.  I forgot to mention that maybe if you want to send pictures, too, that would be fun.  They don't have to be of yourself (if that scares you), they could be of, I don't know, your backyard, or your dog, or your favourite tree, or whatever.  And then the inside could be like a collage of the pictures.  Hey!  They could be your favourite pictures from MMJ concerts, too.

Okay word.  Seriously.  I'm glad I'm sick today, now.  (kind of)

And also, if anyone else has fun pictures and would like to include them, that would be cool, too.  (ie people who aren't musically inclined, but are brothers of rock.  ie people who post on this board that would like to be included.  Is that okay, wigg?)

Can everyone send me their email addresses (I have olwiggum's and hellaciousc's and o's)  I guess I just need lfish's and ben grim's.

Also, does anyone have any information about "buddy"'s submission?  He may have moved, and I made a little blurb from an email, but I want to make sure he's okay with the blurb.  Anyone remember his board name?  Does he post here?

The liner notes are complete!  Well, the word part.  Design still in the works.  Pictures still welcome (and if you don't send them, you know I already have some of you, and I'm not afraid to use them!)  Or else I'll just scrap the pictures idea alltogether.  Might be easier.

Ha ha, even if I DID care about copyright (which I don't, not for this little project anyhow), I wouldn't know how to make the picture unsaveable.  HA HA.  I wonder what I did?

I'm just about finished a printable album cover layout.  In order to make the file nice enough, it would be pretty big to send ...  wait.  I keep forgetting that everybody has a lot of memory in their accounts, now. ... If you want me to send you a file that you can print out to make your own album cover, let me know.

Anyhow, the answer is sure, I can send you the album cover, but I can also send you an actual physical album cover in the mail (not the email, the actual real letter mail) if you'd like, as well.  (I just need a couple of days to get it done.)

Which reminds me that if anyone doesn't have high speed, or if they just want a plain old cd in their hands, let me or 'wiggum know.  (I think I'm covering Canada and "abroad", and 'wiggum's doing the US, and I can help him out if he gets too swamped.)

(p.s.  the picture with the big "word" on it is for greggy.  well, it's for everybody, but especially for greggy.)

(p.p.s.  thanks hc)

YEAH!

I've just updated the web stuff so that you can see the album images.  And I think you can save them, now.  They're just jpegs, but if anyone want the pdf images, I can send them.  They might be better quality.  I'll try and print them as is and see how they look.

(here's the link again:  http://www.medusaproductions.ca/mmj/home.html)

I can't stop listening to these songs.

I just want to say that this has been really fucking fun.

I wish I was here sooner...I took part in a project just like this for the black crowes...

I just got into MMJ and it would be very hard for me to throw something together now but this seems awesome...

I would also have to play everything on my own...I play guitar but taught myself everything else....thats how I record my stuff.... its hard to find a good band...

Well, I think that 'wiggum said he might be into doing another one soon, so you could aim for that!

I did most of my recording on my own, too.  It can be kind of fun that way.

I do want to do another tribute CD sometime in the next few months. I'll start another thread when the time comes.

EC, the artwork looks great. I think it fits well with the album concept...
Title: Re: MMJ tribute album
Post by: EC on Jan 10, 2005, 12:38 PM
(thanks!)

I have the inside liner notes in a Word file (ha ha, I can't even open "word" anymore without thinking of this forum)

The sizes are 12cm x 12cm, which is a cd case size.  So my thought is to organize the two album covers back to back (back cover on the left, front cover on the right) and print them, and cut them out attached, and fold them.  Then print the liner notes, and cut them out, and glue them to the back of the album covers, and presto!  You've got your front bit.  Then, print the insert, and cut it out, leaving a bit of white on either side to hold it in place, and then pop it into the little place behind where the cd sits in the case.

Word?

And I can also make them for people who want cds burned, and I will send some to 'wiggum for the US folks who want cds burned.

Just a quick note on bandwidth - it's waaaay better for me if you save the file and listen to it, as opposed to listening to it from the site.  It's a bandwidth thing, and I have (I think) 5 or 7 gigs of transfer a month.  (I'm on a low-end plan)  So the more transfers that happen, the more it gets used up.

(But wiggum I'm about to check out that link you just sent me.)

Okay, firstly, for otter - it may seem weird because when you move your mouse over the album cover (which is not the "word" picture of my smoke in my backyard) the little hand doesn't come up, so you don't think to click there, but you should.  If it still doesn't work, click on http://www.medusaproductions.ca/mmj/options.html
word?

Okay, and this is really important.  I have uploaded everything to the archive.com ftp.  Everything is set, and then they say this:

QuoteI agree that I have all rights to make this recording to the public, and that I am not violating anyone else's copyrights by doing so

Well I don't know!  Do I?  I mean, I know that you guys that made the songs don't care, but do we have the rights to make this public?  They're not our songs...

I think we need to ask Jim if it's okay, and 'wiggum, I know you haven't had the chance to email him, yet because I did this in the middle of the night, and you're at work, and your STUPID BASTARD job won't let you email from their computer.  (just kidding on the stupid bastard thing, I'm sure they're nice people)

Is John around?  Anyone know what's going on with the ftp?  I can't get in...  If anyone has downloaded the songs, if you could upload them to the ftp (if you're able to get in), it would be very much appreciated.

Word.  Props.

p.s.  greggy, your new picture has made me smile!

Well, it probably wouldn't hurt to get permission to have them out there. I thought that it would be OK because I saw a Wesley Willis tribute on archive.org once before so I figured it was OK. Also, this isn't for profit so there are no toes being stepped on. I'm at work and will be for several hours so I can't e-mail Jim about putting them on archive.
One more thing, they gave permission for their live stuff to be on the archive site, so don't you think they'd be down for letting us put the tribute up there?

Riny?

EDIT: I have an e-mail from John in my Yahoo box. It just won't let me open it. I assume it's about the FTP.

O,
I used the lo-fi mix because I thought it would be a nice change from the rest of the stuff. I think I put "AM Mix" in the title to distinguish it. It reminded me of some of the more stripped down stuff that's on "The Tennessee Fire".

O, I really dig your song, by the way.  I played it for my roommate the night I got them all, and she was like "Wow.  I really like that.  Can I burn it and play it when I'm at the gym?"

Thanks y'all. I kind of cringe when I hear myself sing. I don't like my voice at all. AT. All.
When I listened to "Just Because I do" the other day when I was mastering them, I almost re-did the vocals. Then I said "Fuck it" and left those in there. There are parts of it that sound OK, so I didn't feel like re-doing the whole damn vocal track.  :)

Rhytm guitar: Folkguitar on a peavey amp transtube 112S (no effects involved
Lead guitar: Copy of gibson les paul on peavey  transtube 112S, effect pedals: zoom 3030(sucks big time, any one an idea for a new good floorprocessor?)

Ehm, a friend of mine recorded in on his computer with just a cheap microphone, but his computer program could handle a real bunch of overdubs and at one point he went away to make us dinner and I went berserk adding overdubs. "Okay, I've got the vocals and the guitar, let's add some handclapes. Mmm, nice. Now some extra vocals. And some extra vocals. And some extra vocals. And hey, that tight space over there, I might add some extra vocals over there. And some more..."  :D
And then he made this crazy AM mix of it and now everything sounds like one big blur. :)

I used Fruity Loops to program the drum loops.
I have a "Shenandoah by Martin" guitar that I used for the guitar tracks. It's supposedly Martin parts that were assembled in Japan.
I used a cheap-ass Radio Shack mic to record the vocals and some of the guitar tracks. The rest of the guitar tracks were recorded using my Fender Princeton Chorus amp.
I have a cheap little Fender bass that I used for the bass parts.
I used Vegas Studio to record the tracks and used Sound Forge for EQ, reverb, etc....

HEY!  There's new information on the website about the band "Buddy" that did Phone Went West.  YEAH!

Ummm, I used, jesus let me check, my YAMAHA F-130 acoustic guitar that I got used for $100 because a dog had chewed on it, so the "aesthetics" weren't as good.  Which is retarded, because I LOVE the fact that a dog chewed on it, and I also love the sound.  (My next guitar is the big early 50s Gibson jumbo-body that I was drooling over in the guitar store yesterday.  It's only $6000. [!]  I tried to sweet-talk the owner into thinking that it would be EXTREMELY cool and very good karma of him to sell it to me for less.  Say $400.  But he wasn't buying my charm that day.)

The xylophone doesn't have a brand name, but it was made in Belarus.

I recorded on my computer using GoldWave (which is a free program).  I used the microphone that came with my computer.

I don't know what kind of equipment Mark used.  A very nice microphone, that's for sure.  He's pretty fancy, so I can safely say that his mixing program is WAY better than mine.  (He probably bought it.)  Um,  he uses a mac, so pro tools sounds familiar to me...  (Shit, is pro tools a video editing program?  I can't remember what's what.)

Thanks Sweatboard. I appreciate it. I still can't believe that I recorded something and let other people hear it. Most of the stuff that i try to sing on just sits around and never gets heard by anyone but me.
I may actually work up the nerve to write/record some stuff in the next few months.
I kind of want to record a few other covers just to work on the production side of things. I have a pretty basic set-up here at home, but I think the production on my tracks is OK. I also want to practice recording some banjo and mandolin stuff, so I have a few songs in mind to try them out on...

Oh, I am already thinking about which track I want to record for the next MMJ tribute CD.  :)

Well done guys and girls the albums great...E.C YOUR VOICE IS GREAT.i.love " I wanna celebrate with you".
Like a few other people i never managed to get my track in on time and now the project is completed, regret that i did'nt. The studio in my Bro's house is now fully functional..so im definitely up for recording on the next one. I'll start recording during the next few months, so by the time Olwiggun posts again ..i'll have em in the bag. Im considering a track of the "Learning" album. My brother has a song in the pipeline and our band has one too. So thats three songs for a start.
Olwiggum sorry i never replied before..im a busy man.
Hopefully next week i'll have a less stressful job (interview) and that means plenty of more time on my hands to get the creative juices flowing.

Once again well done guys ;D

:) (<-- that's for writing pianoballad all in one word.  actually, that's just to everything.  I am enjoying today so far.  It even looks possibly sunny...)

Okay,  here's an idea to throw into the mix...  heh, I just realized that I made a pun.  You don't because I haven't got that far, yet...

What about combining efforts for songs?  This might be too crazy, I'm not sure.

But, let's say that olwiggum got this really great track, but realized he needed a little xylophone from belarus and female harmony in there...  Couldn't he send me the layers, I could add to them, and send them back to him for him to mix (<--that's the pun, ahhhhhh)?  (I'm also thinking that a little banjooobido might be nice in Hopefully, if you're up for it, 'wiggs!  OR, tundra!!  You got a banjo, too!)

See, I think that would be very cool.  But possibly difficult.

hellacious, we could duet on Golden...

If anybody would like to try to mix it up with me, I would be into it.  :)  (p.s.  I wouldn't be using my good 'ol GoldWave freeware stuff - I'd get Mark to do it with his fancy, lovely, special, good-vibe gear.)

EC, I like your idea. I actually thought about sending you an mp3 of "At Dawn" so that you could add some backing vocals, but I couldn't pick a spot where I thought backing vox would work. But I definitely love the idea.

Oh. As far as banjo work goes, I can't handle that much. I can only swing a handful of chords. So unless the song has G, C, D, or Em I can't handle it right now. :)
If we find a song that has some other chords, I could start learning them though...

Dude, that's awesome.  I'll just put it in D, and we can banjo it all up!

Wicked.

Gonna start working on it RIGHT NOW!

cool idea EC.

i'd be honored to do a Golden duet w/ you.
it'd be...golden.
(IF i could manage to sing that high)

of course, if you ever came to visit Jefferson's abode, we could just record it live  :)

Maybe IN Jefferson's abode...  "Recorded in the historic home of Thomas Jefferson (in the back hall where it's quiet and the servants used to walk up and down)"

 ;D

Gettin' excited again!!!

p.s.  You can sing that high.  I've heard your "baa baas"

Hey Guys and girls..If any of you wanna send me your vocals. I'll get the pro-tools out and add the beat etc. This is a wicked idea. Maybe i could do the same..this way none of us will know the end product until the album has been finalised. Good way of experimenting and alot of fun.
We can all be each others producers.

any one up for it?

I do know!  That's why they're so special. :)  I find 'em hard, and I'm a girl.

smoggio - I would be up for that!  You just want a vocal track and then you're gonna mess about with it?

I wonder if I could go SUPER lo-fi and submit something via cassette?

(By the way, this wasn't an important post, but I noticed EC and I are tied for # of posts, and I wanted to take the lead - HA! Take that, Megan! ;D)

:) That's probably because half my posts are superfluous!!
Here's an example:

[somebody else] "blah blah blah My Morning Jacket, gods that they are, blah blah blah"

[me] Dude, you're so right.

(heh)

Yeah, I can transfer tape onto my computer.  I think 'wiggum can, too.

p.s.  You're ONLY allowed to submit a tape if there will be banjo playing on it.  :)

Try this:
http://www.medusaproductions.ca/mmj/home.html

Click on the cover page and wait a few moments. It should come up with the menu (at least it did on mine - I've got mediaplayer).

If it doesn't work, get in touch with olwiggum or EC and they'll sort you out a CD.

You'll love it!

I want to apologise for not sending in my version of Alabama Come Clean. I know, I promised but it just didn't work out. For the next volume I promise to record Hopefully. I can't sing so I will hum the entire song. Hope that's good enough.

ps. Love what you all did!!!

Have you people gotten any feedback from the band for this tribute album? What do they think of it? I don't feel like reading the whole thread just now...

And a different question; does anyone know what MMJ thinks of band doing covers in concerts? I'm not talking about an entire concert here, just the odd song.... I mean, it would just be good publicity over here in Norway where the general audience hasn't even heard of this great band! Well, depending on performance surely...

Of course I could send an email and simply ask...

We have heard very lovely, special, wonderful and lovely things from Patrick, Tommy and Jim.  (I guess we kept them private...  well I don't know why.  This thread is really long as it is.)

As far as I have known, the dudes answer their emails.  I don't know about Carl and Bo.  But only because we don't have email addresses for them.

:)

I'd love to contribute with a song in the future....

I'm really glad they were positive about it. A bit sad you kept it private, to be honest. I felt us cheerleaders were almost as much a part of the project as the talented ones. Guess I was wrong. Never mind though, they liked it and that's important.

I think. Lemme double check that link and confirm.
That'll take you to the special place where you can download the songs. Please right click them and 'save as', as opposed to just listening to them from the site - it saves on bandwidth!

I've been listening to the tracks some time now, and I must really say I like it. Don't like to pick favourites, but EC's Bermuda Highway and O's O Is The One That Is Real sticks out in my opinion.

When is the second "album" due? I'd really like to give The Bear a chance with my band. Would be a great way to try and stick a MMJ-cover into our set list...

I'd like to contribute 'the way that he sings' or possibly 'steam engine' (a bit long maybes but id be up for it). If someone else desparately wants to do them I can change tho.

No idea what song I'd like to do.  Maybe an acoustic version of Cobra.  I'm not joking.  Live from the floor.  I'll just pick one of our versions of the lyrics.

And play it on xylophone.  ;)
