For any of you who are gear whores, you'd quickly realize that a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier is an amp built for some pretty serious guitar tone, namely in the field of metal and hard rock. It's very cool that My Morning Jacket use these and are able to get some killer tone, but I was listening to the bittorrent of the Bonnaroo, and Jim starts pulling off these palm muted power chords at the end of One Big Holiday, and I realized that they have their amps gain and everything set for that amazing metal distortion, but they don't play em like that.
I don't know why I'm posting, just seemed like an interesting observation. I bet these guys could rip out some serious metal if they felt like it. That said, I'd love to see em cover Metallica's "Four Horsemen" or "Seek and Destroy".
You you ever heard them do "Black Sabbath" by "Black Sabbath"? It's pretty epic. ;D
no, do you have any clue where i could download some live cover songs of theirs? I've been meaning to find a few. I wish I had something to trade so I could get stuff of John's FTP server.
His server is down right now and will be for a while. (He has a baby!) :)

Yeah, and if I had a baby that looked like that, I'd want to be with her every second of the day. She is so lovely.

I compare it to owning a corvette. You have the horses under the hood, but you don't have to use them all the time, it's just knowing that they are there if you need them.
Plus, they certainly make up the difference by seriously rocking out on stage. Maybe something is coming through their monitors that we don't hear.
(shit.....goosebumps!)

awwwwwwwww!
I've seen them rip quite a few metal sounding chords over the years. "touch too much" by ac/dc with tommy singing for example... :o
do you know where (if they even exist) I could get a hold of some recordings of these covers? I would love to hear their cover songs, especially of classic rock tunes.
Any help would be appreciated. You accepting any invitations for pocket pool, Mr. Conaway?
I don't think that the AC/DC tune Conaway's talking about got recorded unfortunately. My dumb ass went to Nasheville that weekend to see some festival instead, so I missed that show (Derby 2002, I think). I'd be willing to set up a trade with you and hook you up with some of their more outlandish covers, I was thinking about making a compliation disc of their crazy covers anyway. Send me a PM.

Okay I just made the Covers Comp CD. Here's the list:

2. Up on Cripple Creek > Blue Moon of Kentucky (Jim solo '00)
3. Easy
4. O Holy Night (Jim solo '01)
5. Dream a Little Dream of Me (Jim Solo, WFPK broadcast)
6. Never Tear Us Apart (INXS cover, Jim solo '02)
7. Peaceful Easy Feeling (Eagles cover, Jim solo '02)
8. Black Sabbath
9. Everybody's Talkin
10. That's Alright
11. Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash cover)
12. I Still Miss Someone (Johnny Cash cover)
13. Time of the Season (Zombies cover)
14. Be Here to Love Me (Townes Van Zant cover)
15. Girl From the North Country (Jim and Bright Eyes)
16. The Man in Me (acoustic from Live Lunch)
17. This Magic Moment
Well, experts, how did I do? Any major oversights? I excluded tracks that were on the early recording CDs (e.g. Tyrone). I also made a CD of comp tracks that weren't on the early recordings CD but I don't think you're suppose to trade those.
one of my personal favorites was "the man in me" by dylan. also is there any way i can get a copy of this compilation?
you're right about "man in me". I added it. I put the version from WPFK live lunch with the chick singers on there since everyone's heard the one from lebowski fest. I prefer that version anyway. If you want to set up a trade I'd be more than willing. I just about have my fill of MMJ at the time, unless you've got some older shows that I don't. I'm really looking for some Bob Dylan, Neil Young, wilco, RadioHead, Tom Waits, or something like that. Anyone who wants to try and set something up shoot me a PM (Prime Minister or private message, which ever you prefer)
What about the new Prince and Dylan covers?
And "Fairies Wear Boots" by Black Sabbath
or an acoustic Tyrone?
Those are all very good suggestions, Chills. The only problem is the CD's full, so I'd have to cut something off the list. The Prince cover should definately be on there though

I guessed the cd would be almost full.
Looks like a nice set of songs already.
Tied favorites: "Suspicious Minds" and "Black Sabbath"
i dont have a whole lot of stuff to trade as far as recordings.. but i do have 2 "peeps" from the b-ham show.. a jim james guitar pick (complete with what looks like alot of scratches made by a knife on each side of the pick. better grip i guess?) a bunch of plastic cups that say "Sloss Furnaces VIP" on them.. a dated sloss furnaces poster with all the doods in the band's john handcock on it.. wow wait i dont wanna give this stuff away.. i guess i'm just gloating :)
