can't fucking wait.
i'll be fucking pissed if those are all the tracks on the album. damn...i've already heard half of it! 10 songs! thats a joke....we have to wait 2 years for 10 new songs?
im startin' to loose faith in the ol' jacket.
dude, i have seen nothing out of you on these boards but pessimism. It seems like all you do is bash he new direction of the band. How bot you just log off and curl up with your copy of the TN Fire and be done with it?
That said, I'm really excited about this. Yes, we've already heard half of the songs, but we haven't heard them on the album, which gives them a lot more room for creative headspace. I can't wait to hear Dondante and Lay Low and especially It Beats 4 U, to see what they do with it on the album. We've seen cool stuff on stage, but this is an album, and normally they have to scale back on stage due to lack of band members to fill it up.
Also, this album definitely sounds like it has some characteristic Jim James brand of "weird" on it, which makes me very happy. I was a little worried it might have a little too mugh of a guitar assault on it. 8)
To Neal - don't give up on em. If you don't like the new album, then fine. We can't make you. But please don't approach it so pessimistically, it drags down everybody to see you rail on it so hard. And your cmments are always written in such a way that they invite someone to get defensive.
Look out for the greater good...

Maybe they're really loooooooong songs...
10 songs is better than no songs.
This Neal guy's starting to grow on me.
He's living proof that it doesn't matter what you do, some asshole is going to hate it (even though Conaway insists that there are no assholes on this board) (sorry again about your rules, johnny) :)
dudes, like far out man, sorry for the negative vibes and stuff. lets drink some mircobrews and kiss jims james ass a little more.
Maybe we should just ignore him ::)
I think Neal's the same guy who tried to crash the Wilco boards a couple years ago when I used to hang around there a lot. Maybe Neal's really my friend Ben, a programmer who told me once that for entertainment at work, he deliberatley goes on boards for bands he hates just to start shit with the fans. Of course, some people always get offended. If no one pays him any mind, he will go away eventually. But he wants to you to argue w/ him. Ben, is that really you? The joke's old my friend.
10 x 5 = 50
if each song averages to be 5 mins, thats 50 mins
50 mins is more than enough time for you get your rock out
now piss off
Just sitting here thinking...It would be sweet as hell if they put "Oxen" as a hidden track!
Or anything like that...But mmj doesn't do hidden tracks really, right?
How did this lucky bastard get such an advanced copy? It's a long way out for them to be sending promo CDs.
I know it's Billboard and all, but damn.
haha, i think they set the release a little late, just for timings sake and that theyve been sitting on it a little while. At least, thats what it sounded like from Two Tone's email.
He also said they recorded Oxen there, so I would expect an EP out sometime later with the less weird material on it? That song really does kick ass, and I'm sure they will release it.
I think oxen sounds a lot like sooner
I haven't heard a single song of this yet, so I'm excited anyhow. And hey, 'Horses' from Patti Smith and 'Songs of love and hate' by Leonard Cohen both only have eight songs and they're two of the best albums ever. In fact, I'm starting to become a fan of short albums. 40 minutes, 10 songs. So much better than 70 minutes with 4 boring songs, or something.
In fact, screw LPs, I want more EPs! Why has it been such a long time MMJ made a EP? The Split EP is still one of my favourite releases ever by this band. I love that format, really...
It hasn't been that long, if you consider AcousticitsuocA, which was just last year...

I kind of see it another way - I think Neal should post more often. I get a kick out of people who make silly comments about there being ten tracks on the album, half of which have already been heard. (Although it sounds a bit like maybe Neal just wants MORE MMJ - a sign of a true fan, perhaps?)Writing songs is no piece of cake, and ten new songs represent ten more than I currently possess. I can't fucking wait to hear this album. They're obviously going to be way different than their live versions, especially with all the talk of a "new sound" that we've been hearing about in interviews.
I also don't think that Neal's negative comments drag anybody down in the slightest. Who cares what a guy on a message board says about something you're excited about? I know it kind of sucks to hear someone talk shit about something you like, but for me, the older I get the more I realize that as an interested, discerning music fan, I'm not in the least bit interested in what others think about "my bands", so I don't bother to get defensive. To be honest, I think it's funny. For example, if someone can sit down and carefully listen to Thelonius Monk and say, "This is crappy", there's nothing to do but raise my eyebrows and go, "Hmmmm, okay". Or if they think that It Still Moves is a "sellout" album, I make an amused snorting sound. Either they get or they don't.
However, Eisey, I do see your point. I just think that we should allow and even encourage derision, if for no other reason than to think that we're special for liking a special band. (Did I just admit that? At dawn, my ego rides again.)
QuoteIt hasn't been that long, if you consider AcousticitsuocA, which was just last year...
Uhm, yeah, forgot about that one. But I really meant EPs with new songs, like short albums. And I've never really liked live albums. But that's just me.
A little bit off topic, but does anyone remember the band Rough Trade from Canada from the 70's with Carol Pope?
They did a complete album, live from the floor straight to vinyl. And they paused in between each song.
I'm not making that up.
Per Ms. EC...
QuoteThey did a complete album, live from the floor straight to vinyl. And they paused in between each song.
I have recorded with musicians who are the "1 take wonders" that keep the first take no matter how it sounds. That's amazing to me. Guess I'm a bit more critcal of my own shit and well....ok, too many mistakes in the first run.
...and no, I agree with Daddy Johnny in that, we don't have assholes, just whole asses.(kidding..really)
I figure that with the group touring their ass off, that leaves little time for personal life, let alone spending serious time in the studio. After burning up the brain creating in a room, then you aren't going to be home for another 2 months because of being on the road? I'm damn proud of anything new that comes from the boys as well. Touring is hard work, hell look at Phish. Been there, done that, sold the t-shirts, I wanna play with my new puppy for a few months. Oh shit, he's a big dog now.
Another group hug?
neal is a lil' bitch.
cry a lil' more neal. new music sucks i KNOW.
Hell I'm sick of this stuff. I don't know this Neal or anything about him but he's entitled to post his opinion. Let's see if we can disagree without resorting to namecalling.
i think neal has a point. Just 10 new songs? I want a fucking double albumn outta these guys...i know they can do it, i forsee it...Anyways i completely understand his anger, i want more more more more also.
but
10 songs is a good number. Hell, 10 songs is a great number. Check out some of your favorite albums, older albums, great albums and you will see that the tracklist floats very close to the number 10 (or 8 as someone already pointed out). Very old school, very classic rock choice on their part. Plus, the number also implies that the band has refined their music/songs by focusing on a smaller number of tunes. It's all about cohesiveness, also.
While i'm a little upset that all i get is 10 songs, i'm giddy to think that this could be the albumn that stirs a rocknroll community who THINKS they know how to rock, who thinks that rock stars are MADE with stylists and hairgell, forgetting that rock stars are BORN...on a stage.
the soapbox is now vacated...next.
Neal is alright with me. he is alot better than 'the Mollusk' for those who remember. He should be entitled to his opinion, good or bad. sometimes we need a devils advocate to look at things in a different light. this board would get boring if we all agreed on everything.
ah...is Neal the Mollusk in disguise?
it's one thing to have an opinion and express it. it's another to debase others and generally be an asshole.
telling people to "fuck off" and "suck my cock" and whatnot is what we were getting at before. that's not an opinion, that's being an asshole.

Finally! You've come around! And realized that there is at least one asshole on this board! Oh happy day! ;D ;D
But who's saying those things? I haven't read any comments like that. I don't know who this Neal is but he's certainly rattled a few cages. If you read back, the nastiness is directed at him at least as much as coming from him. I don't get it.
I don't get why you defend Neal to the bitter end!?! He's an asshole! And that's my opinion. And I have as much of a right to say my opinion as you or Neal. Every time that this Neal guy posts something, someone gets pissed at him and sinks to his level and then you and Conaway come along and tell us that we're out of line for sinking to his level. Why's are Neal's rants protected and mine not? That's what I don't get!
Quote Why's are Neal's rants protected and mine not? That's what I don't get!
Oh but they're not - or they shouldn't be. I think people should say what they think, even if they hate the band. Of course they wouldn't be on the board long if they did. I just don't think he's said anything that offensive - nothing to match the reaction is all I'm saying. Everybody says daft things but generally people move on.
By the way, The Mollusk could be really funny at times.
Here is a link to a thread where Neal tells me to stop being a hippie and makes fun of me. THen when I call him an asshole Conaway shares the rules of the forum (number 1 being, "No one here is an asshole" And then you, doctorinthehouse quote me and tell me that my comments were not necessary. c'mon guys, relax. nobody's wrong, nobody's right. there's almost 1500 members on this board, we can't ALL like each other. that's a FACT (i wish i could insert a bill hicks soundbit here). neal's got as much right to post his opinion as the next guy. I don't remember him crossing any borders. i'm sure neal loves 95% of what mmj does, it's just that he mainly posts about that other 5%... his choice. besides, there's this thing called sarcasm, don't take everything too seriously.
