Hi all, newbie here.
I'm not sure if hardcore MMJ fans will think this to be a great thing or a terrible thing, but Z is available to purchase on E-Bay and apparently it's not a CD-R or rip-off.
hopefully it is a pre-order sort of deal. maybe this person intends to ship after the album is out and they have bought a few copies...but maybe not. I'll have to check it out.
It says that it is released in September on the auction. It also says "import". Are there more tracks?
it's not a pre-order. the same seller is also offering, and has shipped, the new david gray album that isn't out for another month. it says it's the japanese import with a bonus track. cduniverse has a pre-order listing for the japanese import with the bonus track that will come out in late september. not quite sure what to make of it, either.
There are 52 available...I sent him a email asking him about the bonus track and when it was available to ship.
is this bullshit or what, guys? i'm about bid/buy it now.
Hey there! Long time lurker, first post - HUGE fan of the jacket! I've lived in Japan for over 6years now. Japanese like to have translated liner notes and band info etc in with their CDs. These cost a few more Yen than the regular releases & sometimes come out a week or two before the regular release with bonus tracks. For example, I picked up the new White Stripes a week before it's scheduled release date with 2 bonus tracks. Hope this helps!
That might explain it. Welcome dragonboy :D
He says it has the original artwork and will ship same day...I am going for it.
did he say it had a bonus track or not?
QuoteHi all, newbie here.
Hey bud, I'm the "newbie." Get your own name.
haha
As much as I would love to purchase some shady bootlegged import version of the new MMJ album over EBay, I'm going to have to wait for an official US release to buy it.
In the meantime, I'd love to sample a few or all of the songs before I can buy to satifsy my insatiable MMJ appetite. Does anyone know of a stream or bittorrent that can help me out with this? If so, please email me at bascome@gmail.com. Thanks.
Quotedid he say it had a bonus track or not?
I asked him/her the title of the bounus track and he didn't reply with an answer...I am assuming he/she didn't know the title....it's only 16 bucks with shipping.I won't lose a lot if it is not legit.
(sigh) I'm posting, but I won't bore anyone with my tirades about this. Whatever.
if it makes you feel better, i fully intend to purchase the domestic and the import versions of Z once they are available through kosher means. i always do. it's just that everyone here is talking about how the album is so incredible and i got the jones to hear it too... and downloading terrifies me as i've recently gotten over the second virus attack that wiped my poor comp. maybe you can list your objections and we can all debate, freedom-of-speech style!

My main objections go back to the unauthorized release of the record in the first place. It pains me to know someone close to the band must have broken their trust to make this happen.
I too have the jones to hear it; that's not my beef here. I'm not going to preach on the subject, but like Bob Geldof was pissed that Live 8 tix were on Ebay, I too am pissed that these rogues have the chutzpah to put Z on Ebay. I'm sorry, I find that objectionable.
It's like a gross overcommodification of MMJ. Sure, it does contribute to the "buzz" factor, but it's just not my cup of tea. Just my two cents...
i agree that breaking the band's sacred trust is lame. especially a band that doesn't get those lucrative Skechers/Diet Mountain Dew spokesperson dealies... mad props to 50 Cent and all, but i doubt a few bootlegs here and there significantly affect *his* bottom line. now i'm sad. i would hate to think i encouraged people to get it on the hush-hush.
i guess it's like tom petty said, the waiting is the hardest part. so like you, i will hold on to my Z virginity. who says abstinence-only education doesn't work? ;)
it's been taken down.. hmm.. wonder if they read john's piece and it brought tears to their eyes?
Quoteit's been taken down.. hmm.. wonder if they read john's piece and it brought tears to their eyes?
as much as I'd like to take credit for that... ;)
Just gonna say this real quick....
I seriously doubt that someone close to the band leaked it. There was a review on Billboard weeks before the leak was found. I'm not sayin' that Billboard leaked it, but someone in the industry did, more than likely.
I just don't think that anyone close to the band did it.
That's all I'm gonna say.
:)
what is the objection? Aren't Japenese imports legit? I mean ATO is definately going to send copies to Japan and it they were ill-gotten copies Ebay would not allow them to be sold. Am I missing something?
I am pretty sure the leak was Billboard...not MMJ.They sent a copy to Billboard to review.I don't understand why they do this...all you need is one guy to get a hold of it and it's out there. Why not wait until a week or so before the release date and send it then.....3 months before and you know it will leak somehow.
To all those that are pissed about this let me just say that I am an MMJ whore...I got's to have it all...I can't help myself. When it is dangled in front of my face...well...I gotta take it.I have not been posting any reviews or comments about the music itself since I noticed that some here are angered that it has leaked.I respect your feelings...and at one time I might have felt that way to...but I might die tomorrow..who knows....it's this live for today attitude.
I promise to buy numerous copies of the album when it comes out on the release date.
BTW...it was taken off Ebay but the guy sent me a email saying he shipped my copy so we will see.I must have got under right as the door was closing.
I just want to make it clear that when we refer to they we are talking about ATO. ATO sent a copy to Billboard. ATO will lose money from leaked copies (if anyone).
And remember that Jim said he signed with a major label so that more people could get a hold of his CD, not so he could make more money. Or maybe he was lying and Conaway's right.

If it's from Japan with a bonus track then I'll put my money on it being legit. Japan isn't like other asian countries like Thailand etc where you can pick up cheap/illegal CDs & DVDs on the street. Japan has no pirate industry.
I bought one from this guy right before it was taken down and got a message saying he had already sent it so I'm pretty sure he has them.
I do plan on buying multiple copies for friends, a vinyl copy and all the new merch i can get my hands on. just gotta hear Z now!!!!
If the band gets the same cut from the Japanese import I might just buy that instead of the Best Buy version. Or maybe I'll buy both. Then again, Ear-Xtacy gave away free posters with It Still Moves. I still can't wait for it to hit even though I've been listening to it for a while now.
Cameron, check your PMs.
i started a shit storm, i started a shit storm... the thing about E-Bay is that (almost)anything goes. unless it's your virginity or nazi memorabilia, it's for sale on E-Bay. and the thing is, a lot of the articles, mostly clothing and "luxury" goods are counterfeit. Surely, *surely*, E-Bay is aware of the enormous mass of bogus Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and even Abercrombie crap that's floating about. But it adds to their bottom line, so they leave it be. Sometimes the knock-offs are so good, you have to be an expert with a magnifying glass to spot the fakes. this copy of Z might be legit. but it's clearly not kosher. is the band getting a share of the sales of these E0Bay records? probably not. so nuts to that!
Quotewhat is the objection? Aren't Japenese imports legit? I mean ATO is definately going to send copies to Japan and it they were ill-gotten copies Ebay would not allow them to be sold. Am I missing something?
What, is it already released in Japan, officially? Ebay would not allow what to be sold? Shoot, you can sell your immortal soul on Ebay. There isn't any kind of verification on there about what you are selling. It's a free marketplace, they don't give a shit. Hence the Vitton ripoffs and whatnot.
Again, the objection is about the unauthorized release. And that's my objection, not anyone else's. If Billboard "leaked" the record to Ebay, then they're shits for doing it.
Obviously, we have a difference of opinion on this. I do not find it cool to leak advance copies to the world via Ebay or other channels. In the pre-internet days, you waited for months for new records to come to the record store in your town. All of this instant gratification at the expense of anything and everything just smacks of giant egoism, IMHO. What, the band's feelings aren't important? What they want doesn't mean two shits? That's what I object to. I do not speak for any of the band members, BTW-but do I think they might be pissed off that their trust was broken.
And, in a parting shot, I really don't give a rat's ass that "everyone else is doing it". You know the adage-if everyone were jumping off the bridge, would you do it too just because "everyone else is doing it?" Or, the logic that "it's gonna happen" doesn't fly either. What-nobody can be different, or expect a different outcome because "it's gonna happen"? By that logic, we should all be cowering in our beds shitting ourselves because "it" is gonna happen. Whatever that "it" is, terrorist attack, bankruptcy, divorce...
This is my final thoughts on the subject. I'm not being cantankerous or argumentative on purpose, and no bad vibes, but damn this is a sticky widget. And we can agree to disagree and that's fine.
i love johnconaway's ethical non-conformist vibe. it's so refreshing.
and i have to say... y'all debate so nicely. no name-calling, no bomb threats...

;) it's all in the love. we have been slinging arrows for years here, and we're all still friends.
yeah, we can agree to disagree (again).
I just want to say that I think the thing that we are really disagreeing about is the band's feelings on this. I don't speak for the band either, but I think that MMJ just wants peeps to hear their music, be it now or whenever they (ATO) pushed the relaese date back to. The reason I think that is because I seriously doubt that Jim decided to push the date back to build anticipation, ATO decided to push the date back for some reason that has more to do with their bottom line than love of the music. Of course we'll never know what the band thinks because ATO wouldn't let them say that their cool with downloading.
However, a musician I highly respect, Neil Young, once said something like, "Music is everyone's and belongs to no one. Anyone who thinks different works for a record company". My opinion may not be as humble as Mr. Conaway but I think I have a point. :)
aMillionDreams,
sorry i took so long but i wrote you back today...
I got this today...it's an official promo copy with artwork but no bonus track that I can see...it could be hidden at the end. This one is def mastered,I can tell a big difference in the sound.
