hey all! my name is tom and i'm new to the board. well... not really "new", i guess. i read the forum daily. i just never posted. anyway, i'm a longtime fan, and i was making a mix cd for a friend that isn't familiar with the brilliance that is MMJ! i was just wondering if some of you had some suggestions about what to add/delete. it goes like this so far:
at dawn
one big holiday
wordless chorus
low down
the bear
gideon
hopefully
bermuda highway
sooner (live)
just because i do
run thru
steam engine
anytime
i think i'm going to hell
strangulation
law low
dondante
like? hate? xo
That's a very nice mix, although I would replace "Strangulation" with "mahgeetah" or ""I will sing you songs" or "Just one thing".
I'm not a huge fan of "strangulation" is the only reason I say that.
thanks olwiggum! yeah, i'm really surprised that strangulation doesn't get much props around here! it's one of my faves. that sabbath beggining... mmmmm. to each his own i guess. i'll throw mahgeetah on there tho!
Yep. I'd agree Mahgeetah's a must. Hi iceblinko :D

Strangulation is one of my favorites, but at times I find it hard to get through the minute or so opening. The middle, the lyrics and guitar, are some of my all-time fav MMJ moments. I have played that song for a couple of people, and after about 45 seconds of the opening, I can see them sort of checking out. I do love Jim screaming at the end, where it reprises the start.
I would put, as some said too, Mahgeeta and Into the Woods to the list too.
"how could i know" (oxen) is gorgeous and would be a nice follow-up to "golden". also, for the uninitiated, maybe it would be good to start with something very accessible like "off the record" which would get someone hooked right away and more inclined to check out the rest of MMJ's sweetness. also, if you can find a live version of "cobra". everyone here has very good suggestions, but how can you go wrong? i think it's important to try and showcase the band's tremendous sound range.
Personally, I'd replace Wordless Chorus with Xmas Curtain, but at the end of the day YOU HAVE THE POWER!!! ;)
I'd replace Just Because I Do with War Begun or Can You See the Hard Helmet on My Head?
