Anyone else find that this song probably would've fit perfectly after It Beats 4 U? I don't know why, but whenever I listen to Beats in my car, I want Chills to come after it. It doesn't really fit before Gideon, because of the way it trails out, but it fits almost perfectly after Beats, in my opinion. I made a playlist with that, and then the backwards ending of off the record and How Could I Know at the end of everything. makes it almost an hour.
Have not done this particular order but I will try it -thanks!
I *accidently made a copy of Z with all of the tracks in alphabetical order. including Where to Begin, How Could I Know and Chills and I've got to say.... it doesn't sound too bad! ::)
Hey - is that Andrew Bird whizzzling on this track again? :)

I havent heard Chills! And it bothers me. Is this song a bonus track or something? B-side?
Sorry, I just saw it was a b-side on off the record. Perhaps I should order that one. Havent heard the studioversion of Oxen either.
I know it's on the vinyl.

I finally got around to getting this last weekend. I got
it the day after the Dallas show. Easily worth the price for just Oxen alone! Chills was recorded with a little bit faster tempo than what I figured it would be since we only had the
At Dawn demos to go on. He actually played it live at the Tennesssee Theatre on May 1, 2002 when he opened for John Mayer. Unfortunately, almost everyone was talking over it! I can't say enough about Oxen; it's probably in my top ten MMJ songs.

i laughed so hard when i finally heard chills. i had heard the original a couple times, and was just expecting an elaborate version of that, but when it came on after Dondante, it sounded like it belonged on the Xmas album. It was hilarious, and awesome, all at the same time. I love how these guys think, and they catch you when you don't excpect it.

You, strangely enough, made me want that single even more.
I've only heard a liveversion of Oxen, so 'im very curious about that recording as well.

I think that's the theremin. There is definately theremin at the end of the song, that could be him at the very end of the track but I think it's the theremin.
it's actually not a theremin. i thought that for so long, but finally realized that it's Carl on the pedal steel with an eBow. same deal on into the woods.
Where is the studio version of Oxen available? It's not on any of the singles I've seen.
it is on a single, but in the UK, which you should be able to get your hands on somewhere, if not amazon. it's the b-side on the off the record 7" single that came with the cd, and it's also on the Off the Record UK single that i just mentioned, along with Chills. A good investment, if you ask me.
Here you can download Chills and How Could I know:

Thanks, Jellyfish.
Ok,
this is weird. I just recently got At Dawn, and was looking through the lyrics. The lyrics to Chills are printed in my copy, but the song is not on the cd. So is this an outtake from that time period just thrown on to the Off The Record single, or do I have a weird copy of At Dawn? Just curious if anyone knows anything about this since I am relatively new to MMJ.

The first 2000 copies of At Dawn came with a bonus disc that was called "At Dawn Demos". It was mainly demo versions of songs that were rerecorded for the album. "Chills" was the last song on the disc. The demo version is much slower and more chilling. I still prefer the demo version. Darla will be rereleasing these demos sometime next year.

Cool. Thanks for the info. If I were an impatient man, where could I get the demos now?

welllllllll.......... There's really no reason for me to have two copies, I guess. I was going to put my extra copy on ebay, but since I don't know how to do that I guess I could make it a mmj forum exclusive. PM me if you're interested and we can set something up. The bidding will end on Mon Dec. 5!!!!!!!
Big time thread bump here, but does anyone know of a live version of this song existing anywhere?
For whatever reason (Jims soaring vocals mayhaps), this song will always rotate in and out of my top 5. Do they ever play this?
The only version I ever found was in the archive when I looked awhile back. It was May 2002 at Tennessee theater. It's hard to hear over the crowd noise unfortunately. Low Dog was the taper and somewhere there was a good story about that night. I believe Jim may have played it at his request.

they played it during the T5 run and i believe they played it at the state theater in ME before t5
Thank you both.
I had to do a triple take reading that Jim James opened for John Mayer for that 2002 version. You weren't kidding that you couldn't hear much. Here's the link to that set. https://archive.org/details/mmj2002-05-01.aud.flac16 (https://archive.org/details/mmj2002-05-01.aud.flac16)
So I guess I'll have to wait till the T5 box set comes out before I get a good version.
I'd just love to hear it with the full band.
Thanks again!
But I do like the music I love to listen to some old music videos.
Where can I get How Could I Know at?

Glad I read this thread. I just went B-side crazy and am listening now. So How Could I Know is called Oxen? I'm late to MMJ but enjoying catching up and looking forward to seeing lots of them next spring/summer. Music-wise I'm excited to see where they go. Happy Sunday.
