Must say, new Stephen Malkmus album FACE THE TRUTH is most excellent.

that's for sure, i hated all of his post-Pavement stuff with a passion, but Face The Truth changed all of that.
not to be a sourpuss, but can someone please explain Death Cab for Cutie? I'm not getting it...

*looks around for explanation, too* ???
You're not being a sourpuss. That band blows, lol.
I saw Z reviewed in my sister's Teen Vogue magazine yesterday. They gave it a 4 bees which stands for buZzZzworthy. That's quite the mainstream publication.

I wonder if teenage girls will pin up My Morning Jacket posters on their walls.
Those will be the cool girls. 8)

carl's the dreamy one, they should have the most posters of him. ::)

i mention i dont get them either and think theyre pretty horrible. i do, however, enjoy postal service quite a lot. ben gibbard's voice mostly grates me, but it works quite well for that project. anyone know them and dig 'em?
Thank you. Finally a negative comment on Death Cab. i have no idea what the current infatuation with that band is all about. it makes no sense.

Yeah I haven't caught their wave either (not to mention not being very charmed by Bright Eyes as well).
The article was very interesting tho'. I know there is always this underlying desire to be a cool underground thing, but by the same token "musicians gotta eat too", not to mention pay other bills. SO, it kinda behooves the various bands' fans to root for their "$uccess" so they can survive and continue to produce more of what everyone loves--their music.
I think we're seeing a backlash to that whole "i'm too cool to make any money on my art" school of thought that seemed to dominate for a while...
DCFC isn't my cup of tea, indie or not. no love there. >:(

Pardon me for bringing this up, but wasn't DCFC on 'the O.C.'? I rest my case.

Fuck, I hope not... Sometimes what can be construed as "cool" is just "reality". :-/
(I know whatcha meant, though. :))
well, not to get into Kurt Cobain bashing or anything, but he was the champion for that cause. and he was right about some things, as he was reflecting on the shitty state of music (hair metal was king in his rise to glory) and commerce becoming the same thing.
however, the backlash went to far, IMHO. "indie" became synomous with "no exposure" or "broke and eating Ramen noodles". there can be a balance. just look at our boys, fer chrissakes. are they what the cool people would call "indie"? probably not. but fuck that. they're doing what they do best and how they really want to do it. how is that bad, exactly?
yeah the O.C. blah blah. there have been some cool ass bands on there, both actual appearances and songs. the walkmen were on there, and theyre hardly wot id call mainstream. their lead singer had some funny response to people that would criticise them, but i cant remember it. with modest mouse, shin, death cab, franz ferdinand, etc etc. i dont think its necessarily about some or any of these bands selling out. indie doesnt mean wot it meant in 1991 when pavement broke out. being indie doesnt guarantee you closet status where 12 people per state know who a band is, and this just pisses off some people. even though radio and tv is dominated by shit, there is a general consensus of people out there starting to l like better music, well at least a glimmer of hope, eh?
I was more really kind of trying to be funny and thinking about my financial state as a musician... :)
My ears generally stop working whenever there's an issue about art and money. The argument that if you have money it means that you can't make anything good is so fucking retarded (in my eyes). It just goes about equating a happy life with having money again, and, yeah, I really do not understand that at all.

it sounds like someone has already sold out! ;D ;D
(just kidding) :D

HAHAHAHAHAHA...
whoo sorry. Got a little carried away there. ;)
I liked Lars Ulrich's response when asked if Metallica has sold out: "Yes, everywhere we play, we sell out the venue".
Ashlee Simpson's first album sold more copies than all MMJ albums combined. So, people really relate to Ashlee's music and they connect and feel better when they listen to it. There's some girl in Jackson, Mississippi who gained courage and strength from an Ashlee Simpson song, does it really matter that I don't like Ashlee Simposon? Does it matter? No. More power to Ashlee Simpson.
You can get caught up in the whole indie creds/money making/fan base/video/O.C./blah blah blah argument or you choose not to put your energy there and just support your favorite artists; I choose to do the latter.
I choose to do the latte, myself. I'm pretty tired right now, and I need a little pick-me-up.
(whoooo I am laughing too hard at myself. I need to get the hell out of here and go hoooooome.)

i like the way you think.
EC, tell me latte was intentional (rather than latter). :)

Yes. :) I had that fit of hilarity that you sometimes get when you're
almost done work and you're really tired, but you still have about an hour left, and it feels like two years.
(Did you laugh?)
yes, nicely done ;)

It could be argued that the reason Ashlee Simpson sells more records is because of the exposure. You can't know what champagne tastes like if all you've ever had is beer.
good point John. I ma just awaiting the new Ashlee album b/c she'll have to re-invent herself to stay "fresh". Perhaps a meaner Ashlee, perhaps a Motorhead or GWAR cover? Spikes, leather, attitude? She could do to metal what Avril Lavine did to punk.
