In the amazing song One Big Holiday, Jim refers to "the leather kids" ..... "All the leather kids were loud" is the exact line from the song. What or who are the leather kids? This has been something I have wondered since the first time I figured out he was saying "leather kids" and not "little kids" Any help or explanation would be extremely appretiated! Thanks in advance! ;D
methinks it is a reference to the hardcore scene here in Louisville that dominated the 90's. slint comes to mind as point of reference...there were literally dozens of bands playing every night in this town that could be classified as "hardcore".
Did they wear a lot of leather or something?
what brought this about...the Days of the New phenomenon?
i just imagine a bunch of totally hesh leather-jacket equipped badasses just gettin down to this shit and groovin on it, totally rockin out with it like it's nothin they've heard before.

I am learning both of the guitar parts in One Big Holiday in their entirety and it just struck me as a good question to ask. I always thought the same thing as tomEisenbraun, that it was just a reference to people wearing leather jackets, but I think Jim is deeper than that. Thus, I figured there was a deeper meaning to the term "The leather kids"

well, some did. not Judas Priest-like leather, or S&M leather, but certainly wristbands. Jackets as well...it's hard to explain, really. It wasn't like

but more like

Too bad it was like Sinead and not Brando. Nothing wrong with Sinead, but Marlon Brando just gives off a more appealing vibe :P

Man, I got kicked in the head at a Kinghorse/Jesus Lizard show at the Toy Tiger. that shit hurt.
Anyhoo, I think of it as a reference to that scene, too.
Along the same lines, where were they summoned to, "up the river"?
p.s. - Banjohead, love your quote
what's the name of that island "up the river" on the Ohio that kids used to go to party?

Actually One Big Holiday is about Stephen Kings classic novel, The Stand. To be more specific, its a song about the 'bad' group of people that gathered in las vegas. The Bad Man is Randel Flagg. The leather kids are his followers.
;DYeah, word. ;D
for the longest time, OBH was more of a commentary on how we live our lives, like it's one big fucking party all of the time.

It is right?
One of the first arguments my wife and I ever got into (when we were dating) was over my philosophy that every day is a holiday. In fact, her words were, "Every day is a holiday to you". She meant it as a slam, but I was flattered.
I am hard to argue with; I rarely acknowledge reality.
now i have the dandy warhols in my head, too. a kind of warped medley: "baby let's go - o - oooo, every day-ay-ay should be... one big hooooooolidaaaaaaaaay ahhhhhhhhhh" (the big yell at the end is added from the nashville show. hot.)

Cheers for fitting three 'hippies' and a 'fuckin' into one sentence :o
what was that about fuckin three hippies?
One big holiday is the song i think is the most fun to listen to. Isnt about the recording of the album? i dont really care what its about because once u get your certain interpretation of lyrics its always a letdown when u hear the artist's. I think its about escaping your monotonous everyday lifestyle in some form. For them it is making music and seeing the reaction it gets from people like you and me. For us it may be listening to a mmj album and being able to relax or let go. So i think the leather kids are the fans who give the reaction to the music.
The Leather Kids know what the fuck its up......
so what if were wearing plaid button down short sleves now.
