Title: Cover List and Collection
Post by: thebigbang on Jul 06, 2006, 04:09 PM
In three or four different threads on the forum people are talking about putting together lists and a collection for distribution via ftp or cd or other ways. To help me keep this strait, and hopefully others on the list, I have aggregated all covers I have seen discussed in the various threads.  I also used Ger's list and notes from his Nashville to Kentucky Archive (let me know if this is not okay with you Ger).  I have put all of this into a spreadsheet for those who want to keep track as well.  If people will cooperate with this project, I will convert it into a web page as well at a later date (perhaps with links to each track if it is placed on an ftp server).

The spreadsheet has columns for documenting the covers, including original date, if recorded, if available for sharing, title, original artist, song writer, performance notes, and original version notes.

If anyone can add information into the spreadsheet and email it back to me, I'll keep making updated versions available until we have a comprehensive resource.  Email it back to me at "mmjfansATyahoo.com".

I have 90 tracks listed so far, multiple versions of a few. The spreadsheet can be downloaded here (from Savefile, they'll bug you with popups but it's free storage):

Lookin pretty good.  I like your idea of setting up links to downloads for each track.  That way we can provide a link to amazon.com or something for the tracks that are widely available in stores like Same in Any Language or the Early Recordings, but the list will be complete.

I've been in contact with management but still awaiting word on how far we can take this endeavor.

Also, George Savage has found some more covers and is sending them along to me soon.  So add La Bamba, How the Gods Kill, Dark End of the Street, Spanish Pipedream, and Every Rose Has Its Thorn to the list of covers that I have to offer to this compliation.

I should have added that the performance notes should explain whether it was MMJ or Jim James solo.  Later I can mark the song titles with asterisks or such to designate this.

Also, I suppose the Monster's of Folk tour and Jim's collaborations with M. Ward, Bright Eyes and other such covers will be included if Jim is lead vocalist or shares the honors.  Such collaborartions are a bit of a grey area.

p.s. I'll try to add George's additional songs later today and I guess I can keep editing the list above so everyone can find it quickly.  In my original post on this thread, I tried hard to use pre-formatted text, the "add table" and the "add code" functions to put the song/original artist on here in a neat format but couldn't get them to work.  When I have time, I'll give that another try.

Hot Burrito #1 has surfaced!!!!  It sounds great!

Also, a little birdie told me that "Dondante" from Bonnarooo and one from "HighSierra" is mixed in with a cover of Fela Kuti's- "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake AM" its the intro and outro and rhythmic basis of that version of "Dondante."  So add it to the list, I have both versions, I'll have to listen and try to figure out which version would be the best to use.

Now all we need is "You're a Big Girl Now" and the tracks that Ger has and I believe we'll have all the cover songs that have been recorded and circulated.  There are still some ultra-rare tracks floating around and others that are documented but weren't recorded.  This is going to be an amazing compliation!.  And we can always add to it as we go along.

You could email Ger and let him know how much it would mean to you and the rest of us if he got in touch with me (Dylan/aMD) about this compiliation.  Here's his email:

These are Louisville bound as of yesterday to Dylan.  Three of these five are partial/subjective interpretation!   By that I mean that while Jim and the band were playing the music to La Bamba, they 1) only played about a minute of it, and 2) probably a third of the lyrics were "Benicio del Toro"!
Jim perpetuating his comic side here, I guess!? (Austin, Oct 17, 2003)
He also only played the chorus to Spanish Pipedream - "Blow up your T.V. throw away your paper, go to
the country, build you a home, plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches, try an find Jesus on your own" - and then he went into "At Dawn they ride again" - it was awesome, big surprise!  (Atlanta, March 21, 2002)
He only played about a minute of Every Rose has its Thorn.   Apparently someone in the audience hollered out for it; he and/or the band has reportedly performed it live prior to this date but I am not sure if any of those full-length versions were ever recorded (Greensboro, NC, March 24, 2002)
The other songs I sent were full-length, but Dylan had some of those already.   I sent Dark End of the Street from the Gram concert (House of Blues, Los Angeles, July 10, 2004) and How the gods Kill (Danzig), from The Nick, Birmingham AL, Sept 4, 2002).   Anyway, thanks to Dylan and all of the others who are helping with this compilation.

Just a heads up, I'm going on vacation for about a week so I probably won't be posting or checking email, but hopefully when I get back Ger will have received my email, George's CDs will have arrived, and maybe "You're a Big Girl Now" will have surfaced and we can go forward with our little project here.

Echoing aMD, I'll be away from the 'puter till July 20. Will have the new and improved list then.

I think we can make this definitive with so many helping.  The spreadsheet format will allow us to sort by performance date and alphabetically by the song title and original artist.  Makes it easier to see if one of your faves has been covered.

Can we get an estimate as to how much MB we have here, worth of rare covers? I'm curious.
Title: Re: Cover List and Collection
Post by: aMD on Jul 17, 2006, 01:52 AM
Just got back in town and the wheels are back in motion.  I got the discs from Lowdog, thanks again George!

I have a list I'm working with, I'm starting to compile the actual mp3s, looks like we're going to be at around 400mb with what we have so far (we could probably say 500MB to be safe), to answer your question, Ewok.

Still no word from Ger but we can always go forward with this thang and add his tracks later.  These are the tracks that he has that I don't (that I'm aware of):
2000-01-29 Tuning guitars + White Rabbit
2000-04-15 Hot Legs
2000-04-15 Honesty (very short piece before Honest Man)
2000-04-15 Tequila Sunrise
2002-03-18 I'm On Fire

I'm still waiting on some clarification on which tracks we can actually offer up for download.  For now let me say that though I have been critical of mmj's management in the past, they have been very helpful and cool about us throwing this thing together. Thanks to them and the boys as always!

Also, we ought to start thinking about how we want to host this.  Any ideas?

My vote is for either the Archive or dimeadozen.  The obvious benefit with the Archive being that it would not be a limited offering.  I don't think that either have any stipulations against compilations because I believe that I downloaded the Mofro - Southern Fried Music Compliation from one of these.

what about savefile?
Title: Re: Cover List and Collection
Post by: corey on Jul 17, 2006, 12:08 PM
If archive.org allows compilations, I say go with that. It will always be there and it will expire on places like savefile. Same thing with torrents. If there are no seeders, then there is no way to get the files.
Title: Re: Cover List and Collection
Post by: tdan on Jul 17, 2006, 05:23 PM
Dylan, it looks like the archive is out...

Files must be in lossless format (.flac or .shn), from lossless parent source material; we will optionally create the extra "lossy derivative" copies (.mp3, .ogg) onsite.

From following your earlier posts I believe I read that you were compiling MP3 files.

I checked dimeadozen and bt.etree.org and found the compilation I mentioned earlier listed on bt.etree.org.  That may be the way to go.
Title: Re: Cover List and Collection
Post by: BH on Jul 17, 2006, 05:29 PM
I would say that the people who want it badly enough will get it in the first couple of weeks anyway even if it does expire.  A permanant home would be better of course but not necessary.
Title: Re: Cover List and Collection
Post by: aMD on Jul 17, 2006, 07:08 PM
it'd be nice to host it on a webpage somewhere, but at 500MB, it may be hard to do so without acruing too much of a cost. hmmm.... this is a thinker. ???
Title: Re: Cover List and Collection
Post by: aMD on Jul 17, 2006, 10:32 PM
so here's where we stand as of now.  I have all of the covers in my collection converted to mp3 and in one place.  Except for the two tracks from the planetarium, I hope to get in contact with Brad about those or I'll splice them myself in a few days with a little help from whoever knows how to splice mp3s.  Also, haven't heard from Ger but we'll just go ahead with this and add the tracks he's holding onto later (hopefully).  It's only 5 tracks, but I'd love to have them.

I also have a complete list of covers including the songs that will be available for download and those not.  I will post the list (probably) tomorrow once I finalize a few things.

Word has come from above that I can offer up live audience recordings as well as rarities that didn't make it on the Early Recordings CDs (good news).  I will list the songs from ER and label them as officially released.

Okay so it looks like I'll be setting up a website to host the collection and the list (pending approval from above).  It'll be a little more work and cost a bit to maintain but it'll probably be better than anyother option because I can edit the list and add songs as they come in.  Speaking of which, I just got 3 speed by the Eels to the surface.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking.  I found a site that will host up to 1gig for the year for $5 a month with no sign up fee if you pay for the year.  So sixty dollars would get this thang on the web for a year.  I would appreciate a few small donations to help out.  Thanks again guys, I'll keep yas updated.

Just a quick technical question:
Are all of the mp3s gonna be the same bitrate? I know that's probably a nerdy question, but I'm curious. I'm looking forward to it either way.

woah.  aahhh...  right right.
it looks like they are at a variety of bitrates.  Does it matter?  This probably isn't what you want to hear, corey, but I'm not too picky about audio formats or bitrates in that I don't really think about it.  I was actually thinking about having some in mp3 format and others in m4u, instead of convert m4us over.  Should I be thinking more about this kind of stuff?

It's no big deal, really. It's just me being picky. But you may consider it (if you are like me) once I point out my reason for asking.

If they are different bitrates, it may cause some volume discrepancies if someone makes a mixed CD out of a bunch of the songs. For example, Song 1 may be at 128 kbps and Song 2 may be at 320 so there will probably be a noticeable volume change from one to the next that can be kind of distracting and disrupt the flow of the mix....

But like I said, that was just me being picky and wondering.* I know I sure wouldn't want to convert them all to one constant bitrate.  That's a lot of damn work.  :)

*Also, the mastering level on the mp3s and tracks that you have collected are all going to be different to begin with because they are all coming from different sources. It may be worth it to try to contrast 2 completely different bitrates just to see if it's gonna make that much of a difference.

(But like I said, I'm excited either way).  Just wanted to throw that out there.

Dylan, you should change your forum name to "Hunting Food" (as in Two-Tone's mantra).  ;)

Here is the track list for the George Harrison album:

(2) long, long, long
(3) if not for you
(4) love you to
(5) my sweet lord
(6) let it roll
(7) all things pass
Watching The Concert For Bangladesh right now with a couple of beers in me (Leon Russell is kicking out JJF as I write) I have to express again how excited I am to know this is out there!
I remember chatting to you about this nearly a year ago aMD (back when you were Homer Simpson (wasn't Primushead Homer too?!!))
I HAVE to hear this!!! Man, oh man, the MMJ legend lives on...

thanks for the kind words guys.  I actually need to update the tabs page but I'm so wrapped up in this covers comp it might be a bit before I get around to it.  Right now I'm still waiting for an okay to go ahead with the website.  If the okay comes I'll get started on creating the page and I'll post info for my paypal account for those of you who are nice enough to help a brother out.  Thanks again, I'll keep yas posted when I know something else.
