Hi, MMJ Fans. I've been hearing amazing things about My Morning Jacket over in the Pearl Jam forum. I've been a fan of PJ for years; but I'm WAY behind the My Morning Jacket curve. I haven't really heard anything from them. Where do you suggest I start? Should I start with the first CD and work my way through? Or, get the live album first? I figured you guys would know best.
Thanks...
If your open to more of a country flavor that can be low key at times and downright rockin' at times go with At Dawn or It Still Moves.
If you prefer something more pshycadelic with some synth beats and keys get Z.
OKONOKOS would be a great place to get a bit of everything and you can hear them at their best, which is live.
The earlier albums, IMO, are a little bit harder to "get". They take some effort and dedication, but will be so much more rewarding in the end.
Whatever you chose, mix in some headphones and some mother nature and wear a sweatshirt because you will get the CHILLS!
Definately listen to this man and get it on an mp3 player or walkman and get outside with some jacket!
Dave, you inspired me to get out with some jacket and my camera for lunch today, I'm out for a walk!
At Dawn is their best album.
Buy them all.
MMJ is love.

No way.

Yeah that. But I'd start with It still Moves. ;)

Alright.. It's lame that I just quoted myself...
Here's a quick slideshow of some of the pictures I shot today at lunch with my Tennessee fire on the ol' ipod...

I'd go with It Still Moves first and go from there... enjoy!!!
I would say Z.
It appeals to the widest audience IMHO.
If "Drive by Truckers" is one of your favorite bands, start with "It still moves", otherwise start with Z. Z touches on "at Dawn" and "It still moves".
Stay away from "Tennessee Fire" and "At Dawn". Those albums are more than the average newbie can handle ;-)

Very nice. I am assuming that's the Mighty Ohio River? Cool train bridge. I can just imagine a little Nashville to KY on the ipod. Well done. I had a wonderful view of a industrial park at lunch. Words can't describe it..... ::)

Tis the Ohio, about an 1/8th mile walk from my work. There's a nice little park as well called The Falls of the Ohio. Although not as grand as it sounds, there's a lot of cool fossil beds there that prove we were once at a different latitude, ie. Pangea. (sorry, I'm a geographer)

So you're saying that Louisville used to be high but they are coming down? Bummer.

Equatorially high, yes. It's been one hell of a trip though... Tropical sea to glacial debris...

Oh no we're not coming down! No way! Chronic all the way! :D

I like that. That may have to be my new tagline. Is that yours?
Tis rather catchy... and true!

I only caught the MMJ bug earlier this yr via seeing them open for PJ so I know where you are. Acoustica Citsuoca, the EP was the one i bought after the Eliztown Soundtrack. I think its a great place to start. Then I got Z, It Still Moves, At Dawn, the TN fire in that order. I've been a PJ fan since 1991 when Ten was not a big hit yet as I worked in college radio at the time. That being said, I think I actually enjoy MMJ more than I ever did PJ. I got hooked on this band like a junkie. Eventually, I became like Al Pacino in Scarface, sticking my face in Archive.org
It Still Moves was my first MMJ Experience. ...Okonokos was the clincher for me, it's what made me the obsessed, can't-get-enough, listen everyday, tell everyone I know about them Fan I am today!! ;D
Just get it all...you'd end up doing it anyway. ;)
Start with Z and work your way backwards, ISM, AD, then TF.
I appreciate all the input. I can see that jacket fans have the same love and respect for music as PJ fans. Plus, they're; well, cool! I'm a big fan of live music so I think I might start there. Then see where the music takes me... Bags are packed, ready for the trip...

May your journey be filled with wonder and awe.....

Safe Travels. Just make sure you prepare yourself for when Pearl Jam becomes your #2 band. It might be scary at first, not knowing where you are, how to speak the language ect. But not to fear, my friend. You will learn to adapt. Carry on, Gentile warrior...Carry on.
:P
Same as the rest...from PJ to MMJ. Once I heard about MMJ opening for PJ, I downloaded "MMJ Essentials" off iTunes. Immediately hooked with a nice mix of all of the albums. The best $15 (or so) I ever spent.
