anytime was played...loved the masks...conan came over and shook hands and i'm pretty sure i heard him call both bo and jim by there first names when he shook..which i've NEVER heard him do..at the end he said "love this band...those guys do not mess around"

wish i could make the 2nd philly show but the chances are looking slim

I called everyone on my 'Contacts' list on my cell phone before the show, to try and get some folks to give them a try.

I enjoyed the performance - I wish I had been there.

Good choice on the song.  Bo was standing from the get go.  Patrick went all out with the facial attire.  I've got to get to another show.  I need my fix!!!!!!

Awesome, cant wait to see them play, although their hair was a little shorter than I expected.  I taped something off of comcast music choice where they were rocking out on a few songs around the time of It Still Moves.

FYI

Over the amps is an advertising flag for the Sato-Seyaku drugs co.
The Japanese reads "Kusuri" which means medicine.
The elephant's name is Sato-chan.
He is the mascot for that pharmacy company.

This is a flag that would be found outside drugstores in Japan but isn't around much these days...

It made my Japanese wife laugh a lot to see it - i had to ask her to be quiet so I could hear the song, which by the way, was fucking amazing!!!  ;)

Long time Louisville fan here with a comment. I'd love to say something tremendously positive as I'm a big supporter of the band and think they hung the moon!  but... did anyone else think they should have chosen another song for the show?  I know they wanted to play something with tempo and make a 'big bang' and all....and....or course they're limited on time... but I thought for sure they'd play the single and, quite frankly, better song "off the record" for conan. Or, they could have played "lay low" or "wordless chorus".  Am I on mars here or does anyone else think that "anytime" is one of the weeker songs on the disc?  I'm looking for responses from long time fans... Eg.  Conway!!  Riny!!... etc.  But don't get me wrong. I'm not one to piss on the parade. I loved seeing them on the show.. Stayed up waay to late. I've got my Palace tickets, just got back from Knoxville, and I'll see you also at the Vogue and/or Bogarts!!

Keep smoke'n that crack!

thanks for clearing up the banner thing...i was wondering.  figured "anytime" would make the most sense for Conan from this album.  It rocked hard and sounded really good.  Got me ready for Saturday night.  The sound at Avalon is pretty fucking tight.  the only bad thing is it is an early show and ends before 10:00.  oh well, just have to start drinkin early. ;)  see ya there Fanatic...you'll fit right in with the pirate theme. ;D

i am a long time fan and i think "anytime" made the most sense.  and, i do think is not as good as some other tunes on the album, but it does sound a lot better live.  and, it is the most accesible song besides "off the record" which you really can't rock too hard with.  i think it was the best choice and it sounded good for that particular event.  just what i thought though.

speak your mind!  personally, i think anytime is the weakest song on the album, one of my least favourites theyve ever done.  im in the vast minority, but 3 months later, and its still not grown on me.

i'm going to be speared for this...but, i have to say, it might be the very first mmj song i don't like....to me it sounds like it should have been in "Over the Top" or something...or at the end of a show on Nickelodean in '87, when the kids (wearing ripped acid washed jeans and neon green t-shirts) jump in the air (freeze frame) and then slap five...maybe the "Danger Zone" of '05?  Please don't kill me, as i've tried 54 times to listen to it, maybe hoping i wasn't listening right or something...mmj, if you read this, please don't be insulted, as you're probably one of my all time favorites....ok..commence to tying me to pole and lighting the hay...

the masks were funny but what is it with Jim and not showing his face on Conan?  Great performance!  I am so glad that they played Anytime rather than Off the Record.  Off the Record is the weakest song on the album in my opinion and I've been rockin to the jacket since '99 for those who are keeping score.

Hey I love "Anytime". Thought it was a pretty good choice.I used to think "Into the Woods" was the my least favorite but after seeing it played live in Nashville I've changed my mind on that. But I'm so biased I would be glad to see them play anything. And Dwight is right, even your least favorite tune is better than 99% of anything on the radio. Also Dwight is a great long time fan seen him and numerous shows outside the state of KY and more in the state.

opener will be on right at 7 pm like all Avalon shows.  this is so they can kick you out and have their gay dance nights after.  it is worth it though if you have seen a show at the Middle East or Paradise, both inferior sound and rooms.  MMJ should be on at 8:00 so they can play the close to 2 hours they have been playing at the other shows.  I would head in by 7:30 if you plan to grab a drink or 2 and find a good spot.  Good luck. 8)

Well..... here's my take on it.

Besides being probably the most accessible song on the album (although not appealing to everyone here apparently), I think it is a highly energetic live song.
The Jacket ripped shit up the last time they were on Conan and I think they wanted to keep that going this time.
While I love "off the record", it doesn't have the same energy. It's got a nice groove, but the only quote unquote rocking part is around the 2:38 marker in the song. That part just comes apart live, especially when Jim freaks out and stumbles toward the front of the stage to hold his guitar over the crowd. I don't think that would play the same way on Conan. Just my opinion.

I do like that he said "damn" at the beginning. He didn't do that in Nashville. :)

I thought that gave a great performance and I, for one, love this song.

My opinion is the only one that counts.   ;D

its definitely a much better song live.  i just thought from the beginning when i downloaded the leak, it was an obvious single like no other album has had before.  now its come out as the single, and ive been confirmed.  it just seems sub-mmj standards.  it still has time to grow, though.  i totally hated gideon at first, and now i think its fucking awesome.   [smiley=rock.gif]

which song are you referring to?  I'm confused.  Off the Record is the first single.  Anytime is the song the sounds better live and rocks harder which is why they played it on Conan.

well i was talking about anytime.  i know off the record is the technical first single, but most bands play the single in all public performances.  i really dig off the record, but i agree it wouldnt work too well to play on conan.  they should have played lay low.

I like to rock.

"Anytime" rocks.

I got so many slow, intimate MMJ songs in my arsenal that "Knot Comes Loose" is the song I go to the least off Z.

There's a time to rock and a time to kick back and be all pensive (I think that's in the Bible somewhere).

I like "Alex Chilton" by The Replacements. The guitar in "Anytime" is more sonic than that. Sonic is good.

Closing shows with "Anytime" is proper. 'Specially watching how into the song the boys are.

I love the line about:
"I know we didn't wait to long/because anytime's a good time to move on"

Wonder what the next album will be like... ???

sorry i'm only getting around to this now, but i was at the conan taping yesterday. i stood in the rain for half an hour in the morning for a stand-by ticket, and when i came back in the afternoon, i literally got the last seat in the studio. word to the wise: if any of you plan on going to see conan, apply online for tickets well in advance. if you don't have that luxury, show up at 8 for standby tickets, not 8:30 like me (each ticket has a number and you're lined up in order). the only reason i made the last cut was because i was by myself and none of the 10 people in front of me wanted to break up their groups. plus, i had chatted with a few of those people and they knew how serious i was about getting in. i was happy to see the band brought their full set-up with the owls and japanese flag, but disappointed conan didn't have a copy of the lp. the cover art is so incredible and the camera would've picked up the album much better than the cd. i was surprised jim and patrick sported the masks and that they performed "anytime." i expected "off the record."

Did anyone notice that the "Ah Ah Ahhhhh" parts were...cough...on tape? I guess they were prerecorded and triggered by the keyboard. It wasn't like Ashley Simpson on SNL or anything, but I was kind of surprised. Although, that particular sound would likely have sounded less than great if one of the other guys had tried to sing it while wailing away during a fast song, so maybe it was the right thing to do.

And I'm no longer convinced that Johnny quit the band. I think maybe Patrick ate him.

thats been my experience at all the shows ive seen (4 so far) that they pre-record some of the ooohs and aaahs and program them in to the keys.

I saw a tape of this and noticed it as well. I guess it's okay but it kinda bugs me. Seems like it was something Jim could've pulled off himself, or one of the other guys. As far as being activated by the keyboard...I don't know about that. It didn't look like Bo was actively hitting anything during those moments, but maybe he was. If the drum machine can be pre-recorded, there's no reason why they wouldn't do the same for vocals. Still a great performance though. One of my favorites from the album.

Carl sounds great on just about every live version of dondante there is.  And he sounds great on the version of 'man in me' from the Lebowski Fest.  But I don't really know what I think about the backup vocals conversation.

would it be too different from the way things have been before?  im saying some live harmonies at the shows wouldnt be a bad thing at all.
Title: Re: CONAN
Post by: aMillionDreams on Oct 17, 2005, 01:05 PM
like I say, I can't really decide how I feel about it.  I remember hearing Tennesse Fire and wondering how they could fill in all of the harmonies that Jim layers on the album in a live performance.  The answer was through the shear power of his voice and energy of the band.  And then they picked up a keyboardist to fill in some of the harmonies, which worked nicely.

I'm not sure if the pre-recorded backup vocals are parts that the keyboardists can't pull off on the keys.  But then again, I like the pre-recorded vocals when they come in on live versions of 'Golden'.  And Carl ain't a bad singer either, so... I just can't decide.  Maybe they just shouldn't pin themselves down to one thing and change it up on us like we know they are fond of doing.

Wowee.  I loved that Conan performance.  I think Patrick looks like Animal with that mask on.  That is a wicked mask.  I thought Anytime was a great choice for Conan.  As far as pre-recorded harmonies, I guess sometimes you don't know why people would choose to do that...  But I'm sure there's a reason.

Seriously, though, Patrick's mask is kick ass.   [smiley=rock.gif]

the more and more i hear anytime in a live setting, the more i like it, and now even like the Z version more than ever.

still why accept the pre-recording as is?  debate, people!  you know carl can rip it up since he does at least 'how do you know'.  sure what they do already works as is, but why not discuss wot other options there are?  i say, lets hear bo and carl harmonizing away!  at least try it!

QuoteDo you know what, I really don't think I've ever heard a single song?

Listen to "Peaches en regalia" and tell me that Zappa's not a genius. I dare you.  :)
Music genius at it's finest.
I'm not big on his songs with lyrics, but he wrote the hell out of some instrumental stuff.

Quotejust saw them in boston...those people talk too much...there was an annoying din when they played something acoustic...maybe thats why they didnt...jim made reference to their idle chatter just before anytime...they couldnt talk over that...

THE best. I cannot believe that there's a Beefheart fan on this list. I... I...have to go clear my head. This is too much to handle at this time of night.

i know you guys aren't talking about this, but did anyone else here think they maybe should have played "gideon" on conan? i could've missed a post or two but...i don't know.

i love 'anytime' and it rocked my ass here recently in knoxville and nashville...loved it! but, honestly, my first impression of that song was underwhelming; it just sounded generic...at first.

and i'm worried the casual listener may've thought the same thing. i think 'gideon' has that whole u2, pearl jam type epicness to it and peeps would absorb it.

oh well. they played what they played for the reasons they thought they should and i still love 'em for it.

zappa's the shit
