After seeing and hearing the NYE show a few times. They were able to pull off the covers of kool and the gang and lionel ritchie so well. I think they should do a whole album of original soul/R&B tunes so we can dance the night away at everyshow.
We all know they could pull it off. possibly start the next big thing in music, goodbye indie, garage rock hello SSSSSSOOOOOOUUUUUULLLLLLLL!
That Sounds like a Bass Tone!
i would so be down. and does anyone have some links to these soul covers that were played at the filmore.

Check the tapings section of this forum. Sirius satelite radio 12-31-06 thread. It is a very good recording. A few artifacts but well worth it . It took up 4 discs worth. Run thru into They Ran also a favorite on this. What a transition!
this is an idea i can get behind.
i request a cover of "these arms of mine," though.

sounds like you need to follow the archive link above and get the newer source, I tracked it to fit on 3 discs.

I concur.
Could we also get a "Me and Mrs. Jones?"

Have you STILL not found the covers comp? Are you related to Images and Sound by any chance?
Well, let me say this. I would hardly call "All Night Long" or "Celebration" soul covers. 80s pop/R&B maybe, but not soul. "Tyrone" is more along the "soul" lines if you ask me.
(Not trying to be an asshole here, just sayin').
BUT, I think you're on the right track. I could really get into hearing them pull off "These Arms of Mine" by Otis or some of the other great old soul tunes.
I would call every note mmj has ever played SOUL music!
Jim did say the next album will be 'very danceable". I like the sound of that.
I think he also said it was going to be calypso
Corey you are mistaken.
I used to watch Soul Train religiously.
Kool and THe Gang == SOul
Lionel Ritchie used to be with the Commodores == Soul
Tyrone definately == Soul

You have made Several OUTSTANDING points today my friend. I mean you always make good points but you are on absolute FIRE today!!!

I agree. I don't think those songs have enough soul to be soul. They sure were fun to hear covered though! Hee hee!

I may be pale and one of
thedorkiest women you'll ever meet, but I don't give a damn. I still know when an ass needs to be shaken, and I am not afaid to make the "brave choice."

Just 'cause he was in the Commodores, it doesn't mean that "All Night Long" is a soul song. :) I stand by that. It's a pop song in every sense of the word.

Kinda like if Otis sang "Everybody have fun tonite", and it sounded just like Wang Chung, it would not be soul.
MMJ is completely capable of writing its own soul music... I'd love to see MMJ take on the grassroots blues and folk the way Cream did. Totally electric, spiced up with that twang and wah-wah, the drums banging like crazy.
Then again, I love the alternate versions of Dondante and They Ran - that's a pretty cool sound they've explored, but I'm afraid to try and label it any sort of specific genre.

Well alright then, I'd be all over that! :)
white guys playing soul music usually reminds me of crap music like G Love, which is a bummer.
MMJ could probably pull this off though.

if they can pull out tyrone, I think they can handle it.
Careless Whisper could have qualified as true soul music, if Jim hadn't been waving around that cap gun during the song!
