Title: At Dawn
Post by: EC on Jun 05, 2007, 09:20 PM
let's start a new thread for At Dawn and talk about how wonderful it is.
i've probably listened to it about 587 times at least, and i hadn't for a while, and did again this morning on my way to work.  i am still finding new things, little sounds i hadn't noticed before like guitar buzzes and noises from things happening around the recording.  i still get a hard on when the guitar comes in after all the ambient noise at the beginning, and i still want to start singing (even in the subway) when i hear the way that he sings.  hopefully makes my eyes well up and... yeah, i could go on.

three cheers for at dawn and all of the wonderful thoughts and inspirations it fires.  [smiley=birthdays.gif]

It sounds pretty awesome on headphones, which i rarely use these days. The range of emotions on it is probably broader than on any of their others.
I don't know thought i'd have more to offer-i'll give it a spin and come back.

It's a ritual for me at this point.  It starts with pouring a glass of wine or a nice drink.  Then I pull the Vinyl off the shelf.  Place the record carefully on the record player.  Turn down the lights.  Put on the headphones. Carefully land the needle.  Curl up in my beanbag. The intro to At Dawn starts; I smile and proceed to get blown the fuck away yet again.

If your jaw hasn't hit the ground after the opener, there's something really wrong with you.

I always viewed At Dawn as MMJ's "Indie Pop" album. Lowdown, The Way He Sings, and Xmas Curtain are always first rate pop songs. Also, At Dawn shows the band's progression into all kinds of style, including Reggae (PWW), Blues-Rock (Honest Man), Folk (I Needed it Most), and Country-Rock (Just Because I Do).

You need to have the right mood for this album. Putting it on in your car while running errands will not cut it. Headphone listening in the early morning is the way to go with this beast.

Darla needs to reissue the vinyl. I called them about 6 months ago and the lady said that they were talking about it. She said it was very likely to happen but I'd have to be patient. At Dawn is my favorite record they've done so far. Plus that album cover is classic.

It will always be part of the raging debate in my head over best album of all time.

It is perfect in every way. I knew it from the first spin.

I ate shrooms (for the first time in YEARS...) and put this on...when Jim started singing the first lines of At Dawn, I felt triumphant! It was cool.

I think it's about time they consider playing this entier album start to finish live.......at the Hollywood Bowl.

I would fly out for that.

That'd be incredible, and I'd certainly find a way to get there for that.

That picture is unbelievable. They will be @ ACL this year, I'm completely thrilled. I guarantee I will be sitting front and center.

It's happening once again - the kind of obsession that one can only have with one of their absolute favourite albums.
