Title: Omnichord Vs Guitar
Post by: dragonboy on Sep 03, 2007, 09:01 PM
I'm interested to see if anyone here is a fan of the Omnichord.
Would you actually prefer to hear Jim play a song on the omnichord as opposed to the guitar?

I'm gonna come right out & say it, I'd far rather hear Jim play the guitar than the omnichord.

Before anyone takes offence I'm well aware of the fact that Jim is an artist & has every right to play what he wants, how he wants.
I just feel that he's not doing himself any favors. To me, a Jim James song played solo on the omnichord is kinda quirky, cool for about 5 mins maybe. An Jim James song played solo on the guitar is in incredible thing of striking beauty.

Any thoughts? Let me know & cast your votes please!

Nothing beats Jim on his acoustic.  Nothing.  But I like how the solo shows have both.  It keeps it fresh.  And certain songs like Sooner, sound really great on it.  It just helps complete that overall "feel" of Jim James Solo show.  It's just has a bit of a haunting carnival sound that goes good with the reverb vocals.  Those descriptions are not quite right but it's something like that.  But I guess I still have to say....

omnichord 0

But again, it's like voting for peanut butter or jelly.  You gotta have both.

It's funny that you should mention Sooner. I was listening to a free CD I have that came with Mojo a year or so ago just now & that was what made me start this thread.
Track 14 is Jim James (of My Morning Jacket) Sooner (live). I like it OK but I sometimes wonder if a different song might have worked better especially when you consider that this CD would have been a lot of people's first introduction to MMJ.

I'll butt in for ulterior motives... I cast my vote for the guitar all the way! The Omnichord is cool but as a person that knows not what it really requires to play it, it just looks like a kids casio to me. I know it's more than that so don't go giving me any lessons.  ;D

Now for my motive, Dragonboy, does it say where that sooner is recorded? Could you post it if possible?
Thanks!

Doesn't say where it was recorded unfortunately. It does, however say that it's exclusive to Mojo.

There was a kid at my school who was pretty good but whenever he got it out & played all the other kids used to beat the shit out of him & bust his omichord, I guess because they thought it was such a crap instrument?  ;) ;) ;)

In the end his parents stopped buying him omnichords & bought him a guitar instead. Moral of the story? Damned if I know  ;)

That version of sooner was recorded upstairs in london 09-29-05

Mark me down for the acoustic.  I think it's cool that jj is willing to try new things and that he has the balls to carry that thing on stage but when it boils down to it the acoustic guitar is far superior.

Awesome album title!
I like the omnichord, but I would rather hear anytime on guitar any day of the week.
Daniel Lanois can do some sweet things with the omnichord.
