Appearing near the end of the disc, "Part 2" of the track is an eight-minute-plus mash-up of disco drumming and grandiose production unlike MMJ has ever attempted.

yeah, i want to hear this

My Morning Jacket Unveils New Album Track List

March 07, 2008, 1:40 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
My Morning Jacket throws fans another sonic curveball on its new studio album, "Evil Urges," due June 10 via ATO. The 14-track set sports the most adventurous music of the Kentucky-bred rock act's career, beginning with the title track, a falsetto-driven groove-fest that opens the disc.

MMJ is uncharted territory with songs like "Highly Suspicious," whose robotic funk beats and falsetto singing wouldn't sound out of place on a Rick James or Prince album.

Strident rockers like "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 1" boast unusual touches, from fluttering synth lines and multi-tracked vocal parts to chopped-up beats and electro effects on the bass and guitars. Appearing near the end of the disc, "Part 2" of the track is an eight-minute-plus mash-up of disco drumming and grandiose production unlike MMJ has ever attempted.

Elsewhere, "Thank You Too" conjures a lost soft rock classic from the '70s, as frontman Jim James tenderly croons, "You really saw my naked heart / you really brought out the naked part."

James and his acoustic guitar are also at the forefront of "Librarian," while "Remnants" and "Aluminum Park" will satisfy fans of MMJ's straight-ahead, double-guitar attack.

The group is expected to unveil new material during shows next week in Houston and Austin, Texas, the latter one of the most anticipated sets at the South by Southwest festival.

Here is the track list for "Evil Urges":

"Evil Urges
"Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 1"
"Highly Suspicious"
"I'm Amazed"
"Thank You Too"
"Sec Walkin'"
"Two Halves"
"Librarian"
"Look At You"
"Aluminum Park"
"Remnants"
"Smokin From Shootin"
"Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 2"
"Good Intentions"

I'm surprised that as early as Okonokos leaked that this is already starting to make its rounds.  I figured they would have kept this one wrapped up a little tighter.

i assumed they leaked it to Billboard themselves so they could comment on some of the songs...

Dylan...as a long time Jacketeer what are your thoughts on the descriptions of these tunes?

Have other songs we are all familiar with been described in a similar way before they released and then turned to sound NOTHING like the preview description (e.g., Wordless Chorus)?

Probably so but it's got to start somewhere right? I just assumed they would have kept it a little more guarded longer, even from critics.  I'm not saying it is now leaked or anything but the more its played for people the better the chances of it being leaked it becomes.

I'm thinking this new sound will be similar to what Beck has been doing over the past few years. I kind of equate Beck to Jim as far as their evolution of their sound.

Good Intentions!  I knew it!

BH  "Heavenly Thoughts"
Vespachick  "Enlightened Actions"
Jon T "Devine Intervention"

How did we not think of plain old GOOD INTENTIONS!!!

My mind is spinning with the possibilities of this album.   I wish they would not have dropped this on us so early.  IT'S FUCKING KILLING ME!

Now I'm going to have to drive to Jonathan Cohen's house and pepper him with more questions.

Riny, I need to do a review for the St. Charles Journal, can I get a listen?

this album has the potential to be one long, reeling version of "Cobra".......not that that's a bad thing, haha, but 14 tracks! We are being fucking spoiled people. HELL YEAH!

By the description, I think I'm either going to really love the album or be horribly disappointed. I'm feeling worried since I hate hate hate disco and electronica (although it works in trip-hop).

As far as the description of the sound goes it sounds like they made that funk record they always talked about making. I'm looking forward to see what they do it.  I trust that anything Jim puts his name on will be gold (but I am a little nervous).

I don't hate disco and electronica, but I hear ya. I'm pretty sure MMJ are smart enough not to go all recent-era QOTSA. I just hope the album's not just 'of the moment', and holds up well over time like all their other albums so far. Love the funk aspect. The description of Highly Suspicious reminds me of the first 3rd of Cobra.....that's a good thing. Thank You Too = Make It With You? We'll see. Can't wait to hear it all.  :o

Quoteits like this:

"Evil Urges"
"Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 1"

other tracks

"Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 2"
"Good Intentions"

You're a quick study. Very observant! Interesting....

Is it possible that Wonderful could get released as a stand-alone?

Or that it may be on the new project with M Ward and Bright Eyes?

Either way, the only song ever played before is Look at You, only heard by those lucky folks who made it to the Rud. :D

Excellent news. I can't wait to hear it.

Found this while trawling about:

PETER ABELARD (1079-1142 AD): In the middle ages, a Christian thinker, Peter Abelard, added a new dimension to the problem. He thought that an act itself is not good or bad but it is the intention of the doer that makes it good or bad.  If a thief commits a theft intending it as something good, it is thereby good.  God considers only the spirit in which an act is done. If one acts in terms of what he deems right but errs and does wrong, the act will remain good.  According to him, goodness and morality are a matter of conscience and intention to do wrong.  An evil done with good intention is not sinful.

Evil urges... good intentions.   Have the chaps gone all medaeval christian on us?

Quotehhhmmmm...not to be a negative nancy, but i'm "highly suspicious" of this new "sound" and "direction"....

I have to conquer.  One of the things I was most impressed with about "Z" was the restraint.  10 songs, great dynamics, no bullshit.

I am as excited to hear this as ever, but I worry about all my favorite bands falling in to the category of musical masterbation.

I'm not really worried about the length of the tracklisting. At Dawn was all the better for its length and sprawl. And given their history of great soul covers, I'd think that their studio originals are at the same quality.

I'm very excited as well.............someone needs to do some serious recording on Monday night so we can hear some of these new tracks.

Or I can wait until Thursday night...................or, someone just do some recording so I will have a good Tuesday.
