Is that the Ferris Wheel from the St. Louis World's Fair?
Ride was two revolutions, ~20 minutes each (some references say 4 revolutions, about 1 hour)
Marriages, banquets, some daredevils rode on top
4,200 tons of steel were transported by 175 freight cars
Stood 264' high, wheel was 250' diameter, 825' circumference, 30 feet wide
Axle was 45 feet long, 32" in diameter, weighed 70 tons - largest single piece of forged iron in 1904
Towers were 140' tall, 40' by 50' at their bases.
Each of the 36 passenger cars was 26' by 13' by 9' high, held 60 people (with a guard)
Total capacity of 2,160
Dynamited on May 11, 1906, and sold for scrap for $1,800
Fate of 70-ton axle remains a mystery (no record of its movement or destruction
I'm not sold on the shadowy figure, but I love the rest of the cover. Very It Still Moves.
The figure does look a bit photoshopped. But it does have a very "It Still Moves" vibe to it. And the press photo may prove it's authenticity.
Two-Tone's new look :o

That's an excellent photo Tom, one to treasure!
Not sure about the cover art...interesting...didn't like it @ first but now I do...still think it could be an April Fools joke...
I think its bogus too....the freaking website is called "girlieaction".....my wife is going to think i'm hitting some lesbo porn sites.
I think that could be the real deal. I don't not like it.
to be honest i really dont like it.
i think "Z"s cover is just awesome, but this is lame.
if the press photo was the album cover it'd be another story, thats sweet.
they look like pimps, jim looks like a cowboy now.
-------------------EDIT------------------
i dont beleive its it.
its april 1st, the websites name holds no credibility & its just too lame to be an mmj album cover.
i think that they will release the cover art once they change everything on the website and once the evil urges page is up. i think its gonna be one big swift change. their gonna hit us all at once with everything
OH LAWD GIRL

hey guess what, i can't tell if that's two tone or tom eisenbraun in the above picture.
also, i'd like to point out that brad is wearing the viking helmet that i gave to him.
"its april 1st, the websites name holds no credibility"
i challenge you to hit this link: http://www.girlieaction.com/
then tell me there is no cred there, also i'd like to point out that Girlie Action has done the band's PR for...wait for it...FOREVER. they thank not one but 2 people from Girlie Action in the 9th row of the thank you notes ("thanks peeps") in IT STILL MOVES >> "Alison Zero & Felice Ecker @ Girlie Action"...these people not only work with tons of amazing artists, but are a major part of all the great articles you have read through the years about our favorite band. i'd do some research before you question the cred of someone who deserves your respect.
Point taken. Even so, anyone could be pulling our leg today. ;)

Well, if I was going to do an April Fools joke, I would definatly get my promotional people in on it. However db is right, I like the cover art the more I look at it. I think I just saw something evil in there somewhere but now I can't find it. Hold it a 37 degrees and squint your left eye about half way. Why hasn't the band made any announcements on this site? The record wasn't even announced here...
Are we going to get any info on a single? It's around two months before release and we're yet to find anything out of this nature.
At least give us a single!
I have a hunch that we'll all get it at the same time when the layouts are changed.
The press photos of the band are beautiful. The design released on April Fool's is, well, appropriately and embarrassingly awful.
First order of business:
Tommy's suspenders and pioneer button shirt.
Second:
Jim's beauty of a belt-buckle.
(Life's a Beach)
Discuss.
The fucking album cover is fucking terrible. It's awful. Even if they have a song on the fucking thing about a fat guy standing in front of them all in a bonus track it's not gonna make it good.
Yeah, I forgot to mention that belt buckle. It's a beauty.
I don't mind this cover. It's grown on me, but it definitely feels like the weakest of their album covers.
I really can't get into the cover at all either. It seems kind of soul-less since it's so clearly photoshopped. With a name like "Evil Urges" they could have come up with something better than this...
Either way, I think the music will be great, and that's why I listen to MMJ.
-----------
Side thought: I was just listening to Houses of the Holy. I think that the various influences Zeppelin mixed in on this album (reggae in D'yer Maker, funk in The Crunge) parallels the juncture that MMJ is at with Evil Urges (the funk of Highly Suspicious or the soul influences of Sec Walkin,' for example). Just an idea.
this should solidify the cover art authenticity:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89528513
see at the very bottom for a sneak peek at "evil urges" and it has the cover art.
Now that it's been confirmed as legit by a number of sources:
Has this album art grown on anyone, yet?
Really, I mean. Not just being polite.
My only comment would be that just becuase it has been confirmed by a number of sources doesn't really mean anything. All of those "sources" just got it thru the girlieman press page like the rest of us. Until I see it in my hand, I won't believe.
Having said that, although I am not in love with the art, is has grown on me a bit. And I know theatre's and ferris wheels are two of Jim's favorite things so it's a perfect fit.

I think the theatre is The Palace in Louisville
I don't think it's The Palace...the architecture on the cover is more baroque and The Palace is more eclectic
If you look closer...The Palace is covered in crazy patterns & colors, but the coverart is all gold leaf.
Anyway...I think the cover is sweet...it makes you think and wonder what the hell you're looking at...all of these layered references
I still think the cover is pretty damn ugly looking, but it will by no means affect my enjoyment of the album.
In other news, I had a dream in which some random person sent me a copy of Evil Urges in the mail. Too bad it was just a dream...
i would like it more if the figure wasn't blocking the whole thing. maybe that part of it is a joke, and the rest of the cover will be revealed. BTW i think Z is their best cover art.

I think you are onto something, that's just their sense of humor. I'm not saying I don't think this is the REAL album cover, but I do think they are interested in what kind's of conversations it sparks up. It's not like I think they put this cover out and didn't realize how ridiculous it is.
I don't mind the cover, but it'd be a lot cooler if the bear was looking at them instead of that dude.
QuoteI don't mind the cover, but it'd be a lot cooler if the bear was looking at them instead of that dude.
Haha! agreed.
I agree that the text on the amazon site is definitely just the sticker that goes on the wrapping.
I think it's alright. I can see it being on some worst cover art of '08 somewhere. It's not terrible, but I will say it's my least favorite cover art of any of their albums.
I've been holding out hope that this was an April Fools Day thing, but it ain't looking like it. Yeah, I don't like it at all. Not that that matters, but...
I think the band's visual art has always left something to be desired, with the possible exceptions of the Tennessee Fire and Chocolate and Ice. That includes the videos for One Big Holiday and Off the Record. oh well.
Not me. I think this is the weakest album cover yet, but I love all of the artwork. Tennesee Fire, At Dawn, It Still Moves, Z, these are all iconic images! I mean, how can you hate the bear? Or the Hollywood Bowl? Or the bird in surgery? (Okay, I'll give you a little leeway with the last one. ;))
QuoteI don't mind the cover, but it'd be a lot cooler if the bear was looking at them instead of that dude.
good call! that would be so much more interesting.
It kind of looks like a mixture of Dave Mckean and Bill Sienkiewicz style artwork.
I like those artist's styles. That said I think this cover, as it looks now, is butt ugly.

that there is your basic left brain-right brain struggle (ie, hemispheres) objectivity vs. subjectivity; logical self vs. creative self; business man on his way to work vs. naked dude getting his freak on. It's deep. You just don't simply
listen to Rush, you have to be smart, too (but I listen to it anyway and pretend to get it ;))
QuoteWhat was the name of the photographer who did these pics? I can't remember now, and I don't know how to search for it.
If I'm the person(s) responsible for this album cover, I'd want my name to be forgotten. He or she should stick to photography. Any of those press photos would have been
beautiful for the cover... this... well, excuse my frankness and I really don't mean anything personal by it, but this clusterfuck of photoshop effects is just
terrible.
Maybe if the guys knew how much most of their fans are disappointed with this cover, they'd make the swap before this shit starts getting pressed. It's probably too late, I'm still hoping it is an april fools day joke.
I honestly dig it. I think it's a fantastic clusterfuck of images that don't really jive. The fact that the shadowy figure is consuming nearly 50% of the image is very distracting and it forces your mind to feel discomfort with the image. That's a bad think for photography but the band is really making a statement with this cover... there is discomfort on their minds.
or maybe, just maybe, they read Pitchfork a lot. And got a serious chuckle from this past year's worst album covers list. Surely Mew, Built to Spill, and all other company did not have "Hey! This is incredible!" on their minds when they were putting out their album art (well, maybe Mew did--I kinda jive with that one because its so weird).
But what if the Jacket thought, "our last one was very cool and very intricate--what if we decided to not hold anything and just be as blatant as possible with the cover" so they set to just putting everything they'd been associated with since the last album on the cover.
But then it was just too obvious, so they said "damn, these layers look ridiculous but it needs...it needs a big mysterious chunk taken out.... Hey Brucey! Come over here! Let me get a picture of the back of your head in the dark..."
I really like the image of the Ferris Wheel. It seems like they are about to approach the top...i.e. theater venues. I just imagine someone standing in the record store looking at the album cover, but that mysterious dude is just standing there blocking their view. It's really funny to me for some reason. It's like when you see them live and there is just the silhouette of some dude right in front of you.
You kind of want to put your eyes in his sockets and you kind of want to tell him to move the fuck out of your way.
You know... I still don't like the cover. I think elements of the reverse side are very good, though. I photoshopped the album font on top of a clipping of the reverse side - doesn't look all that bad,
(http://profile.ak.facebook.com/object3/535/56/n2204753114_7995.jpg)
Yeah, I like the image you just posted. It looks like he's getting invited into a brand new world.
How do we know this is the ACTUAL album art? You guys are suppose to wait until June 10th to even look at it!! We must have disregarded the e-mail asking us not to look at the album art that is on Amazon.com, inSound, Pitchfork, and least of all the band's own website and newsletter e-mails... you know, kinda like some other folks disregarded the band's e-mail asking them not to distribute stolen property.

But to answer your question, we don't know that it is the "ACTUAL" album art that will absolutely be on CD's June 10th... for all we know, they may change it at the last minute.
