"hello all you fine and wonderful people out there that are interested in what we do. we now live in the 90's - the era of the interweb and instant gratification. these are confusing times for all humankind, but especially for those of us in the music world as you well know... a week or so ago we played some of our new songs for the first time at a show in houston tx! about an hour later all of those songs were available on the interweb- talk about speed!!! since those and other non-album audiovisual recordings are available to people on the interweb, we wanted to make at least one "real" song version available (if one was interested in what the "real actual studio album" might sound like) to those of you who have supported us most and have seemed most excited about what we are doing over the years.

so here is the song "evil urges". we sure hope you are to enjoy it! we would put the whole thing out there on the interweb, but gosh darn-it, we're still a little old fashioned in that way of wanting the listener to be able to get the actual music when it is supposed to be released, when we say it is finished- not when someone else puts it on the interweb.... but it is the 90's now, we understand that. its a new decade and we want to be part of this decade, but whilst still maintaining a link to the past - where one can't necessarily get everything they want immediately when they want it, but rather when they are told they can have it - by their real life keeper or their digital daddy! we will play both roles here. we all personally relish waiting to unwrap that shrink wrap and smelling that fresh vinyl or compact disc plastic, mmm...that fresh cardboard and paper. or if we buy it off the interweb we all love holding our computers up to our noses and smelling those brand new digital downloads...mmm...fresh! gall durn it- we're just old fashioned that way. sometimes... gentle reader, in this age of instant gratification, waiting can be so rewarding, it can teach us a valuable lesson about the triumph of the human spirit... but sometimes, like our old friend tom petty said- waiting is the hardest part. thank you all for being so supportive of us, and unending in your love... from the bottom of our cold dead hearts!

On June 10th, 2008, My Morning Jacket will release their 5th studio album, "Evil Urges". Just like we did with Z and Okonokos, we'd like to offer up the opportunity to host a listening party and celebrate the new record with family and friends, before it gets released to the public.

If you're interested in participating, please respond to this email with your name, address, email and phone number. We're going to do our best in choosing those who have responded first, we'd also like to make sure that as many people from different cities/locations can host listening parties. So, while you may be among the first to respond, it's our hope that the music can be heard and shared in a variety of locations all over the world.

Once you've been contacted, a package containing: My Morning Jacket posters, a t-shirt, and of course an advance copy of Evil Urges, for you to share with your friends and family..... will be on it's way to you!!!

So this song sounds good, although I am completely unable to make out most of the lyrics. I hope this thing comes with a lyric sheet.

The drums kick, and so do the guitars. Just wish there were more bass guitar pumping, but maybe it's just the quality of the mp3.

I grabbed it, but I haven't listened.  I'm REALLY torn about whether to do it.... :-/  I want to hear the whole thing on vinyl... poop!

I'm really digging this new reverb. I can hear them tapping Chiccarelli's Zappa vibe!

I also really really love the falsetto--it's all true voice unless it's somebody else's!

Yet another reason this is the Greatest band in the U.S.  Jim's voice in the song gives me chills.

Funny that we were talking about Wings earlier today...just for a second (1:36) it reminds me of the reggae breakdown in Live & Let Die.

Amazing, incredible song!!! The Jacket have added another unbelievable song to their live canon that can be played "when (they) absolutely, positively got to kill every motherfucker in the room. Accept no substitutes."

It sounds a lot more hip than heart, but they've been going in this direction for awhile now. Reminds me a little of Wordless Chorus taken to the next level. I was hoping the soul vibe on this album was going to be a bit more serious, but Jim seems happy. Maybe I need to be happier to fully appreciate it.....lol. Still lookin' forward to the full album.

Seriously though, from the live songs there is PLENTY of heart and SOUL.   It looks like it is going to be a perfect mix.

The studio version sounds waaaay better than the live rip from NPR.  What a great album opener.

It's a hell of a thing.  Did you listen to the Touch Part II album version that was linked on a thread this week?  Sooooooo good.

I had the same problem in Internet Explorer.  When I tried it in Firefox, I got right through.  Not sure what the glitch is, but try a different browser and I bet you'll get it.

I couldn't download it either on my computer. I think it had to do with the pop up for the password. I finally got it last night and listened to it for the longest time on repeat. I am so addicted to this song, I can't get enough. I LOVE IT!!!!! Thanks MMJ, can't wait to see you guys do this song live.

VC, we should join forces!  Today I actually saw an old friend/employee who now bartends at the East End.  She said that we could work out a public listening party there (if there is a slow night that would work).  Once I get the care package, I am throwing her a call to see what can be worked out.  She went with me and AJ to our first MMJ show at the Aladdin, so she is down.  Just got to see if her bosses are into the idea....

I was selected to host a party.  I'm in Hopkinsville, KY which is about an hour from Nashville.  So any of you West Kentuckians or Tennesseans out there are all invited!  I'll be putting the word out at AT&T as well...getting the word out to every customer that comes in that Jacket is the greatest band of all time!!!

I received the same. first e-mail said congrats! we picked you to host, tell us your shirt size and address. then five mins later said, sorry, better luck next time. I replied to the first one b/c i think that i could throw a kick ass party over here in Pittsburgh, and they replied "Thank you for your interest in hosting an Evil Urges listening party. The winners have been contacted." so yea, still kinda confused too...

For those that were picked to host a listening party, when you replied to the e-mail MMJ sent you, did you get an e-mail in return? were you contacted in any other way?

I got an odd auto-response saying "Thanks for your interest but..." because I responded so quick--they probably forgot to take the auto-reponse off of the emails sent as a response to the Congrats emails. I sent 'em a note asking if my info went through okay and got a response not too long after confirming that they had. If you're on the fence, just send a note!

i think as long as you got the first email telling you you're a winner---you won---like tom said, that's an auto response, i got it, too when i replied back w/address, etc

Well, it's my first post on these boards, and man is it going to be a good one.  I wanted to let everyone know I will be hosting one of the listening parties in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I'm not sure on details yet, as I have to work that stuff out with timing and location, but I know that I'm planning a pretty cool get together.

Since this is the MMJ home board, I was wondering if folks had any ideas on whether it would be better to do it on a weekend or weekday?  I was thinking about trying to do a Saturday night kind of deal, with food and a few adult beverages and just generally a hang-out kind of atmosphere, though I understand people's schedules are busy and it may be better to do a weekday for Cincinnati natives.  I'm open to hosting two get togethers as well, if that's what it means.  Just wondeirng if anyone had any thoughts.  Thanks.

EDIT: I'm also on the Bonnaroo message board, Inforoo, and I'm going to post details on there as soon as they emerge.

Doesn't look there are any shows at the Pageant that night so I'm not even sure if the Halo is open on off nights. There is that one bar over here by the Tower that is under the rail tracks (up the hill from Busch). I think it's called Richters? They may be willing for any business. Cool, I will stew on it a bit.  I guess I'm more worried about how to get the word out, than where to have it.  Anyway, think about it and let me know if anything jumps out at you.   I can certainly have a party at my house but I'm hoping to get the word out to more STL peeps if possible.

Anyway about my further temporal absence from the board I'd like to bring up your own words:

"I've been avoiding the board for a few days (in particular the Band section) because I don't have the time or inclination to wade through reams of shit to catch up with the news.  There are upsides - I've managed to mow the lawn, catch up with my filing and polish my shoes.  But it's starting to get pretty old."

Some of the arguments on here have been embarrassing to say the least. Being a member of a message board has always seemed like an absurd thing to me but I kept hanging around here because of the nice vibe and good music recommendations. In all honesty, without taking sides and without arrogance, I feel above "arguing on the internet."

Not to knock everyone here, most of you are able to have a good laugh about it and I salute you  :)

Haven't received mine yet, but the email from MMJ/ATO said they wanted people to host parties on Memorial Day weekend or the weekend after, so I'd predict sooner than later.
