Title: 3 years ago tonight!
Post by: ycartrob on Jun 03, 2008, 09:45 PM
The music

3 years ago tonight. We pulled into Sloss Furnace
parking lot, thinking, "Is this the right place?" Bummed
an ibuprofen off the parking attendant. I'm good. I'm
also nervous, going to see the boys  ROCK. I want to feel
my best. No more weed, no more beer, living on the vibe.
We're in, LA's best friend in tow, she's a mosher and a harley
chick, never seen the Jacket. So, I got my new t-shirt on, the
one I made the night before. I am special, I got the shirt with
Jim on the front, that great pic, you know the one (taken by that 1 dude):
(//%3Cbr%20/%3Ehttp://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f296/ycartrob/tokyo-03.jpg)

so I am leaned on a wall, making it through another opening
band, pretending I enjoy being in a crowd, when up the stairs,
across the way, walks in some dude, some fucking idiot, wearing
a home made T with the EXACT picture on it. We spy each
other, he gives me a bow, I give him a point like, "No, you
'da man". And of course, LA has to go talk to this guy and
his AB. She doesn't know any strangers. We end up next to
each other
down by the front. That was the show that some guy who used
to
come here got up on stage and sang along with that popular
sappy Cheap Trick song before Brucie asked him to get down.
That
was also the night we met Brucie.

The Music

so the show was great, the sound was suspect, and LA's
friend
lost her mind during OBH. Jim pulled out the omni for one of
the
first times and made an ode to iron ore and dispensed peeps randomly from his pockets. So what do you know but the other
idiot in his JJ t shirt (we'll call him Bri for now) and his wife are
going to Ahtens the next night for the show at the 40 Watt. We'll
look for you. cool. LA has made friends, I am along for the ride.

40 Watt in Athens. One of the best (and sweatiest) rock shows I
have ever attended. Bri and his wife and LA and I meet Jim
before the show and chat it up. Bri has his rig there and
says
he'll send me the show. If you have a chance, listen to
Magheetah from the Athens show 6/4/2005. Chills. Plus, that
was the show with the maestro.

sportin' the standard Dobro

The music

so long story short? (please) this idiot who stold my t-shirt
idea,
bri, or Brian, or Parading Without a Permit, or Sweatboard,
has
since become one of my favorite people in the world,
ever. genuine. Down to earth. Big heart. Loves love.
LA and I have
broken bread at his house with him and
his wife and they in retrun have done the same in Nashville.
Oddly enough, Brian's first
show to see the Jacket was in Knoxville, Jan 18, 2004.
And how
do I know? It was my 40th birthday! I was there too, but our
pathns never crossed.
And oh, well, LA did try to kill him once with a can of
Seagram's sparkling raspberry soda at 2 am, but that's
another story...

the music. It's all because of love of the Jacket.
That's what
made it happen. I have a friend for life now. So, now I got
like 4 friends.

We have done great battle in the Krunk
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f296/ycartrob/freecrack.jpg)

Forged the mighty lawns of Vanderbilt with other plunderers
and grinders. Hanging out with the boys after the show.

and The Ryman (hey, I recognize that t-shirt!)

and Tennessee Theater, and Blue Cats! and even some
Explosions in the Sky in Birmingham.

THE MUSIC

Thank you so much Brian! I truly love you and your wife
and
pets and your Pearl Jam collection! it's been an honor and
looking forward to more times in the future. I probably got
another good 45 years left in me...

can you say chicken penis?

Man...I was thinking this morning that one year ago today, Jim and Carl knocked off a killer set at the Rudyard Kipling that, in a way changed my life forever.  But it doesn't hold a candle to your story.  That's awesome.  Very special.

Great t-shirt, by the way!

Ha, I Love you.  Still haven't had a smoke, still thankful for even having ever met you.  I was listening to "Smoking From Shooting" today, and the line that goes..."Cum Bi Ya My Lord" made me think of a story you told me last time I saw you, and my eyes just started watering.....It wasn't sad, it wasn't happy.....it was just a really powerful combination of both.  I guess it t was just a recognition of when Humor and Beauty and Magic all Align in a way that really Touches Something Inside Of You.......and it kind of just lights you up.

Thanks Tracy,

That Was Really Beautiful!

it's been 3 years already? wow. oddly i too thought of this show a few weeks ago and how it changed my life. it was the middle of a summer where i really just did things on impulse for the first time in my life. i woke up that morning and made the decision to go at around 10am with brother and our close friend in tow (neither had experienced the jacket live and were only casual friends and by casual i mean they would listen to them if i played it for em).

we had a 6 hour drive ahead of us and didnt really even know if tickets were available until we called the ticket booth halfway through the roadtrip! some great sites to see indeed on the way down from western tennessee. an 18 wheeler that was on fire and still rolling down the highway. 2 car wrecks. the city of birmingham for the first time. and most of all the haunting aura that is sloss furnace.

i remember parking in the lot underneath the overpass outside the ampitheatre and thinking "damn it's too early" but then heard the echo of jim james doing a mic check and said "it's okay let's stick around and meet people" that's when we met meg and kory and the rest of the gang.

oh and that drunk guy who got thrown off the stage by slayer guy (that's what we called him back then because he always wore that slayer shirt) was drunkre and we had the time of our lives laughing about that one and making fun of "slayer guy" for his boston redsox tat on his neck saying 'boston sucks!' and all. hearing j.j. play "this magic moment" on the omnichord and getting to scream the lyrics to golden in his face (the mic was giving a lot of feedback so he stopped singing and just bent down to the crowd to hear us sing it for him) was unforgettable.

after the show we walked around the dark parts of the furnace grounds just looking at stuff and walking off the shakes from such a great show and somehow we run into the entire band and their manager mike. it is still to this day unbelievable that we got to sit and talk to the whole band about some of the things we talked about and for as long as we did. they showed their utmost gratitude that we drove so far to see them and on such a whim. "it was a true display of human spirit."

that day was definitely amazing and sorry for such a long post but it's good to let out all those memories sometimes.

"In a few minutes, we're gonna turn on the blast furnace back there and really give you guys what you came to see... which is a fiery bed of molten iron ore. It'll probably kill us all, but it'll be worth it. We'll be making a statement about iron ore," Jim James, June 2005

The Sloss Furnace wasn't just my first My Morning Jacket concert... it was my first concert ever. I can remember a few random details about that night... I can remember Jim handing out peeps and me thinking, "I bet he likes the Muppets, too." I can remember some moron (that I would later be introduced to, his name was Brian) getting on stage to lip sync, only to have this scary guy (that I would later be introduced to, his name is BRUCE!) tell him to get off the stage. I can remember the stage wasn't really much of a stage at all. I can remember Jim noting towards the end of the show that it was their first show ever done in the depths of a fiery furnace... which made me feel good, because I was a witness. I remember Alan and I on our way home to Tuscaloosa, completely deaf due to the terrible, damaging acoustics of the show. I remember that as soon as I woke up from my nap, I made my account here.

On this day, I am celebrating my third year as a jacketeer.

Sloss Furnace
Rites of Spring (where I officially became a viking)
Bonnaroo 2005 (the giant puppets)
The Ryman (where I met the band, and my future fiance)
The Tabernacle
The Roxy Theatre
Bonnaroo 2006
The Alabama Theatre (backstage, and allowed to sit in for the soundcheck)

Wow, some awesome stories here, testimonials really.  Today is my third anniversary as a Jacketeer as well.  Another great fan on this site mailed me a free show three days ago, and I didn't even know which show it was going to be, and whaddayaknow he sends me my first show ever.  40 Watt, June 4th, 2005.  I could not believe it!  Now I had the one show I wanted most at hand and could relive it:   the Mahgeetah opener was the most energetic opener I have ever heard, the conductor (Heinrich von Heckelheim), the headbanging of OBH and Twilight to close.

I love this band, I love this music, and I love you fans.

i also had a very special night three years ago last night.
and when i think about what i did last night, and what i did three years ago last night, i feel very happy.

me and corey and his wife and my best friend went to the sloss show and that's where i, too, met brian and AB for the first time (but not tracy though - not yet, anyhow), and drunkre, and darkglow and lots of people.  and everybody was calling me EC, which i think freaked my friend out just slightly.  and then later, she nearly killed me.

i only have one thing that sums up that night for me.  one magical and grand thing.  a thing of beauty and power and fortitude.  a beacon, guiding alabama with its monumental glory:

oh my god.
i totally forgot about that.

i'm pretty sure that sloss show exists in the annals of history as a vortex of awesome.  many people from around the globe coming together in one place and mingling for the first time.  i even remember talking to you, b, about that "other dude" who stole your shirt idea. :)  i have a pic of this meeting somewheres, but it's on my computer at home.  maybe corey has his... ?

me and corey were right at the front, and i lost my shit bigtime.  i was really in the zone.  i'm pretty sure corey's face got whipped by my hair a gazillion times, and i'm sure he was seriously loving me grabbing him every 3 seconds "holy shit, corey!  HOLY SHIT, COREY!"   :D

Yeah Brad, I'm feeling pretty good about being on the "A - LIST" myself!

It's kind of like this.......I was watching the movie "24hr Party People" the other day, and they were talking about one of Joy Divisions very first shows in England, and they mentioned how many AWESOME PEOPLE were in attendance that night that ended up going on to form amazing bands of their own (Thome York) etc. etc.  It's just like Us......

-BRAD is awesome at art, and growing a beard
-MEG is awesome at music, and being awesome
-Cory is awesome at art, music, and getting dry humped from behind
-Me and Tracy, well.............we're awesome at making t-shirts at Kinkos.  Hells Yes!!!

thinking about this show the other day..

man what a doozy to hear some of those Z songs for the first time in a place like this..

and the drifters' "this magic moment" on omnichord

everytime i pass this billboard in North Alabama on I-65 advertising the "boobie bungalow" strip club i think about the time after the show when we were just milling around behind the stage area checking out the steelworks and running into the band. we joked with patrick about how this "boobie bungalow" place we saw on the way in would serve as a good wake-up detour because we had a 6 hour drive back home to TN to be up for work the next morning to which he says "well i guess that's better than if it were a cock bungalow"

i remember how terrible the sound was at this show but i wish MMJ could play at venues like this again

I'd just like to mention that my aunt lives very close to this place. I've had several former students who have danced there too. I'm glad that the Boobie Bungalow has made itself known to all of you. I can't tell you how many times as a kid my sister and I laughed at that establishment.
