For chrissake, is there an original reviewer anywhere in the music world? Just sayin...
Yeah. I don't really hear Prince anyway. I hear Jim James and the band doing their own thing.

Its just so damn lazy and indicative of most critics need to place everything into categories. When something like Evil Urges comes along, which isnt easily explained in terms of genre and not easily compartmentalized in regards to older work, they just cling to comparisons. Its lazy and its a disservice to the band. It also influences a lot of people, which in turn becomes incredibly annoying (ie: "the FYE clerk said they're sell outs" thread).
Who gives a shit, but I tell you what I do love their cover version of "I could never take the place of your man" I have been playing that alot lately!
I still haven't recovered from the Radiohead, Wilco, and Lynyrd Skynyrd comparisons.
I thought they sounded like Fleet Foxes?
I'm sick of it. Even when they say they're not comparing to Prince, they can't leave his name out.
And geeze, what if he was still going by "The Artist formerly known as" crap...they'd leave it out for sure if they had to say that everytime.
He is a fan of Prince............a musical influence........shows up in a song or two.........happened a few on the new album........no big deal!
I thought they were getting Jonas Brothers comparisons.
I'm pretty sure that JJ stated that Prince is an influence on him on a few occasions, its ok to get compared to artists especially great artists. I don't think I have read a single review saying that it sounds like their trying to be prince all the reviewers have said is Jim is doing vocals similar to prince aka high falsetto.
For all of you who hate prince, go listen to Lovesexy, Sign O the Times or Purple Rain. He really is an amazing artist, his ego is a little too big and he's kind of a dick but that doesn't detract from his ability to play guitar or write great songs.
No matter what, every band will always get comparisons to bands that came before and that is simply because no matter what type of music you create someone has created something prior to it, whether there are any real comparisons or not it will always bridge a gap to some one in their mind, just relax take it and enjoy the music not what someone said.
It's the sweet ass falsetto, mang!!!
Anyone should consider themselves lucky to be compared to Prince. He's far and away the most dynamic performer bustin' out music these days.
These comparisons only further the cause. I betcha there are many folks who love Prince, heard about the comparison, checked out the new album, and fell in love.
That's how it's supposed to work, right?
Yes Jim sings in falsetto voice No it does not evoke Prince for me.
QuoteI thought they were getting Jonas Brothers comparisons.
you wish. and so do i kinda.
prince is one sick baller, but mmj also got the sweet bidness.

That's more like it

Jim's EU falsetto and the soul influences sound more Curtis Mayfield and old school. With all these earily similar Prince references, it seems like every writer is reading each other's reviews.

I definitely see that, some of his Woo's and screams remind me of marvin gaye too. he's soulful but it's unique jim james soul. definitely some motown in there too or something. prince is more of a slut when he sings. jim's style as a different vibe completely.

Is that true?
Isn't Snoop's name Calvin Broadus? You foolin' Tracy?
Comparisons? I don't think so. But Prince is clearly an influence and if you're denying that you should listen to the CD again.
prince is an influence but didn't invent falsetto

Did I ever deny it? Its an influence but I think more is being made out of it than should be. A few songs, one most notably, seem to be influenced by Prince. Does that mean every single review should lean on that comparison? Its lazy journalism.
You sound a little like Prince on the title track and "Highly Suspicious."
JJ: I was just having fun with it. It's people's natural instinct to hear that and think Prince, but I don't really get that. We wanted to make this record more rhythmic-oriented, and tighter and more focused, and make it more about the bass and drums.
I hear a lot more Daft Punk in this song than I hear Prince.
All Prince's songs sound smoother. Not a criticism of Highly Suspicious, but the only point of comparison I see is the vocals.

The first time I heard that song was in concert back in March and I thought it sounded like kraut rock. After a number of listens, I still think the song has kraut rock elements and since I've disliked that particular genre for 30 years, I can't embrace "Highly Suspicious". It ain't boring though.

I hear a lot more Talking Heads than either Prince or Daft Punk
..I do kinda see what youre saying bout the 'kraut' rock thing Jaimoe, but it still rocks
