So, maybe this belongs in off topic, sorry if so.
Two things really,
I'm getting married next month and myself and herself have decided to play Golden as our first dance song. We're both totally in love with it, but I dunno about the album version. It's pretty sweet but I have a live version which I think is much better (ACL 06) but there's an announcer talking over the start. I'm wondering can anyone think of a gig they played it particularly well.
Also, as I'm not a dancer, anyone any idea what kind of dance might suit said song? I was looking at a Waltz but like I said I'm not a dancer :(
Maybe I'm overthinking this lol! :)
As a non-dancer myself, I would plan nothing and let the mood/music move you to the dance that is needed. Plus, it's your wedding night, so, the pressure is off to look good and worry about what others might think of you (i.e., your game is complete, no need to keep bringing it) ;)
Hehe thanks, I was just looking through my library and saw Knot Comes Loose. I think I might have to put that in the running for last dance haha!
"Sweetheart" is another good one.
I've never heard Chocolate and Ice, thanks for the reveal!
Always meant to try and get a copy of it , to Amazon!
my dad plays in a string quartet that does shows for weddings/receptions/partys/ect. They do requests. Hes my dad, so of course im not going to have him sitting to the side the entire time playing his cello. But i told him that their going to play golden at some point during the wedding/reception. You should get a string quartet!
My wife and I had our videographer use Golden in our wedding video. It fit so perfect with the scene of us leaving the ceremony and heading to the reception. So well in fact that the videographer said he planned on using it for other wedding videos! It also made an impression on my parents who immediately began asking about mmj and subsequently bought all of their studio albums! ;D
How about the live version of Golden from Acoustic Citsuoca?
edit: I forgot about the "You KICK ASS" guy at the end of this track. Not exactly appropriate for a wedding, I suppose. ha!
There's the rolling stone version. Great version, but Jim only, so not sure if it's the one for your wedding, but you should hear it anyway.
I think the Acoustic Citsouca version is pretty damn good. What about OKONOKOS?
Just One Thing would be perfect for a wedding.
Have you picked up "Where to Begin"? Maybe not quite a love song for a wedding, but beautiful nonetheless.
Is "Steam Engine" out of the question? ;)
Also, you might check out "Come Closer" from the Split EP...
If you need any help obtaining these, shoot me a Private Message.
awww that is so cool. congrats. assuming i con someone into marrying me, i too want to play golden (along w/the verve's lucky man) somehow. i don't think any kind of pattern dance would go w/that song, like Tracy said, i would just kind of wing it. :-) you'll be too busy worrying about steps to enjoy the moment if you don't.
A Golden Wedding? :-?
Sounds interesting. When do the invitations go out?
I assume someone is also throwing a shower for you guys before the wedding where you get lots of gifts. If you're going to have a Golden Wedding you need to also have a Golden Shower. ;) ;D Seriously though, congrats.

You sell yourself short. ;)
(on the marrying part, that is)
I vote "Knot Comes Loose" instead of "Golden". Dunno, the lyrics for "Golden" somehow don't equate to "Happy Wedding Day", IMHO....
our plan is just one thing into steam engine.
we dance to the combo in our living room all the time.
i have been married 10 years even i just got seperated. but my first dance was #41 from Dave but the Dave and Tim version.
if i were to do it all over again and i wouldn't ( that is my cynicism ) but if i were I would choose either Golden from Acoustica C or I would choose Hopefully from the KCRW show with Carl on the sweet slide. or rather Wonderful the way i feel from the Bridge show. do some creative editing to take the jim speak and stuff... beautiful song that will make people cry and smile at the same time.
good luck...
Thanks for all the replies! :)
I will take a look at a couple of the suggestions, I just got the Rolling Stone zip file from another post, Golden is perfect, no crowd noise or anything.
I think we're gonna stick with Golden as a first dance as it kinda has a special meaning for us as a couple. I think though I might try and get another MMJ song in for our last dance, the aforementioned "Knot Comes Loose" or "Steam Engine"
I can't overload on the MMJ htough, I'll be emotional enough as it is without Jim James' "crooning" making me cry! Haha :)
Thanks again for your help guys ;)
okay but for a second dance or coming out song you HAVE to listen to the verve's lucky man, he wrote it for his wife (ex keyboardist for spiritualized)..the most beautiful song ever;-) i can't stress it enough. lol
Golden is an excellent choice. Now we all have 'Thank You Too' as well. :)
I will probably not be able to attend the wedding, sorry. But yeah, check out Acoustic Citsuoca, also check out Okonokos and the bonus disc (moreso the bonus disc, I think that may have a promising track or two).
Wow, this topic is old - but I thought I'd dig it up from page 14 :)
Well, we sealed the deal back in June, only just getting round to this now. Evil Urges was released the day we got married, how's about that for competition for attention huh? Hehe.
We eventually ran with Golden as first song, and it was amazing.
Now that we have "Thank You Too" and "I'm Amazed" - I must admit they would also have been perfect. In fact, I almost shed a tear while listening to "I'm Amazed" recently.
I'm gonna go listen to it right now in fact ... oh and bonus, MMJ just announced a gig in Dublin. Wewt.
Oh and thanks again for all the suggestions :)

Congratulations! There is definitely a glow about you.
Hello everyone. I am getting married next month and was able to convince everyone that I should pick the music for cocktail hour. I was wondering if anyone had a quality recording of Come Closer that I could add to the list. I have the Jim James Top Hits version from the 3 cd set that someone was nice enough to create on here.
Also this is what I have so far and would like some feedback.

Cool list. I did the same thing for my wedding. I wont post the whole "setlist", but we have some similarities (The Man in Me [You a Lebowski fan, too?] and Van Morrison, although we played Beside You). We had 2 MMJ songs as well, The Way That He Sings and Phone Went West. I also had my cousins play Harvest Moon for the wedding party dance. Good times. Whatever you decide on I strongly suggest playing your own music. It'll make it seem like "your day" that much more.

I think it would be a good investment to go ahead and purchase the Split EP with the studio version of Come Closer. You can probably find it at your local record store (not Best Buy) for @ $7-$8.
Welcome to the board. Good luck. I always wanted Trouble to be played at my wedding. We'll see.
welcome to the forum! nice mix, man. my suggestions would be to add mmj's "sweetheart" from the chocolate and ice ep. other faves for a wedding:
baby, you got it/ brenton wood
too late to turn back now/ cornelius bros. and sister rose
god only knows/ beach boys
Think the Okonoskos version of Golden would work great.
While its a long song, getting a band to play a shortened down version of "I will sing you songs" might really kick ass.
really like the list posted above, some great stuff in there...
Thanks all for the recommendations and compliments. The Louis Armstrong song is not on iTunes, but I was able to listen to it. Great song. And I am a Lebowski fan, how can you not be.
Flying to Austin tomorrow for the show, and can't wait. 4th time seeing them. Then going to the Boston show as well.
My wife and I were married in June and also used Golden. I put it in a slideshow of photos which was a prelude to the ceremony. I used the album version but if you are dancing you might like the acoustic version better
