Title: Tennesse Fire & At Dawn Vinyl
Post by: jeffro79 on Mar 17, 2007, 11:32 PM
What are the chances we'll get another run of these in vinyl???? I need both badly!

It'd be nice, they'd sell like hotcakes. I paid a little over a hundred for each...  :'(

I throw all my change in a jar and when its full head to Kroger to the coin star. I normally get about $100-$150 a time and I normally splurge with this cash. I'm damn close to ordering At Dawn w/ the bonus CD off of MusicStack. The only thing is paying that much $$$ for it I'd feel a bit guiltly every time I played it ya know and I defiantly want it to listen to it and not keep it stashed away. I'm getting damn close to taking the plunge though.

Don't feel guilty, I play mine all the time, that's why I bought it. Every time I play it, I realize why I spent the money.... after all, it's only money and you could be dead tomorrow so enjoy your time today. Ewww, was that preachy...

I'd love it if they did a re-issue on these... I've thought about caving in and grabbing the $100+ originals, but I keep thinking of all the other things I could do with that kind of money. Can't really justify it, when there is a chance for a re-issue.

I still don't have At Dawn on vinyl.  It went on ebay last week for 60 bucks for it with the demos CD, not bad, but it's not in the budget right now.

I saw that, that's the cheapest I've seen it go in a couple years.

I called Darla about a month ago and asked about the chances of a re-issue of At Dawn. The woman that I talked to said that it was something that has been discussed and to keep checking their website. She did not sound like she was trying to pacify me, she sounded sincere that it has been talked about and sounded confidant that it would be re-issued.
Take that for what it's worth. But I am going to wait it out and see if or when Darla does re-issue.

Holy crap!  There's a double LP of Tennesee Fire on ebay right now that's already up to $91.00 - and there's still FIVE DAYS left in the auction!!!
Title: Re: Tennesse Fire & At Dawn Vinyl
Post by: Kory on Jul 31, 2007, 02:53 PM
that's because it has the bonus 7" with it. I have wanted that version for years. I have had 2 copies so far... the wichita that I sold after I got a Darla pressing. I'd sell my Darla pressing though if I could get the Darla with the 7".
It's a sick disease I have.

This auction came up right after one just sold for ~ $150.

This is only the third time I have EVER seen this (In the last few years that I have taken notice).  The first time, I bought it for $65 and felt really friggin' insane.

I'm confused though...  From what I understood, ALL of the Darlas originally came with the 7".  However, I generally see the Darlas sell without the 7".  What gives?  Are people keeping the 7"s and selling the rest?  Anyone know how this was originally packaged?  (like were the 7"s in the shrink wrap with the albums, or the record stores got a separate box of these to do as they see fit?)

I've wondered this too chico... do you have the 7"? There's one selling on GEMM for $250 that I seriously thought about for a while then told myself it was stupid.

as most people in this thread already know, i still need at dawn on vinyl.  but i think my budget mandates that I wait for the fabled "rerelease" of AD on vinyl.

As far as I've always known, the 7" bonus only came with the first 1,000 copies of TTF. But I have no clue how many have been pressed ...

I actually have two original copies of the bonus single, one with the double LP and one without, and as I've explained in another thread somewhere on this forum, I will not sell either one of them ... sorry Kory ;-)

Anyone else think that At Dawn sounds even more magical on vinyl? I didn't notice it making as much difference on the Tennessee Fire vinyl.  But At Dawn is so simply gorgeous on vinyl.

Oh shit.  Ebay has At Dawn on vinyl was demos disc for $129, Buy it Now!  If I wasn't so broke right now I might snatch it up.  I've never paid that much for any piece of music.  i don't think i could justify it.

Oh and he has the tennesse fire for 129 buy it now too.
Title: Re: Tennesse Fire & At Dawn Vinyl
Post by: chris on Aug 16, 2007, 12:12 PM
alright, I broke down and bought "at Dawn" for the 129.  I've been wanting this thing on vinyl for so long, i just didn't want to take a chance of seeing the price be even higher at some point in the future :(  Anyway, the guy i bought it from says he only played it about 2 times and it's listed as Nearmint condition, and first pressing from darla (was there any pressing but the first?) and it's got the demos cd.  Anyway, hope it arrives in one piece and it's everything i'm hoping for  ;D.  anybody seen it go for similar prices or higher?    I still need to get ISM on vinyl as well, but this was always the holy grail, it's the album that introduced me to MMJ and has always been my favorite, and easily in my top 5 albums of all time, so i guess the money shouldn't even be an issue, although my girlfriend is gonna give me shit next time she glances at my credit card bill :o

For those of you who are more familiar with Vinyl than I, I have a question.  If the band decides to do another pressing of AD or TF, will the value of the originals go down, or will they maintain 100% of the value since they are "limited originals"?
Title: Re: Tennesse Fire & At Dawn Vinyl

QuoteAnyway, hope it arrives in one piece and it's everything i'm hoping for  ;D.  anybody seen it go for similar prices or higher?

I do not have an expensive stereo ($100 Denon turntable, middling Onkyo Receiver and ancient Kenwood speakers I bought at auction)  and it sounds way better to my ringing ears on vinyl.  So, if you have a decent setup, you'll get better than you hoped for. Plus, you get larger cover art. Even four years or so ago the Darla At Dawn was going for about $100 on Ebay.  I don't plan on selling my copy, but it's nice owning something going up in value (as opposed to stocks today!).

I would expect it to take a hit on value.  I believe it will retain 100% of its value as a collectible, but take a hit on value as a music delivery mechanism.  Those who just want to hear "At Dawn" on vinyl, but are not really collectors will surely just get the re-release.

That being said, as more and more fans jump onboard, the value will probably creep back up.

Quote[...], and first pressing from darla (was there any pressing but the first?) and it's got the demos cd.
As far as I know there haven't been other pressings of "At Dawn" besides 1,000 copies on Darla Records in 2001 which all came with the demos CD (as well as with 2,500 copies of the CD - Darla only), and 900 copies on Wichita Recordings in 2003 which did not include the demos CD.

As discussed before, only the first 1,000 copies of The Tennessee Fire came with the 7" single, but I don't know how many have been pressed above those 1,000, but there are more for sure (as I have had one without the single). And there's also the issue from 2003 on Wichita Recordings which was limited to 900 copies.

First or limited pressings are in most cases of more interest to collector's, regardless how many 'other' copies have been made. Of course it depends on how collectable a band/artist is. When, like with MMJ, there are no other than first or limited pressings, these are not only of interest to collector's, but will also gain interest from other buyers.

Hey Dreams, sorry about that.  I knew you wanted it, and having known that you'd wanted it for a while, I wouldn't have bid against you, but luckily I didn't hear about anyone screaming for that specific copy, so I wasn't conflicted about buying it right away.  I appreciate the heads up though, I had been in that auction for the one that's at $60.00 right now, but didn't want to go through the stress of waiting it out when that other was a guarantee.  There's not much time left on the one that's up there now though, and it's still holding at $60.00, wonder where it'll end up?

No, the value of the original pressings will never be diminished, so long as there is a tell-tale way of knowing the difference between the original press and the re-press. What will be diminished is much of the demand for the original.

Take any Beatles record, for example... there have been reprints for years and years, but the value of the original press is still out of the roof and climbing.

And by the way, let's keep in mind that the band doesn't make a dime off of eBay and second market sales, so I think it's only a matter of time before someone sees the fan base demand and makes this widely available again.

Kudos to you guys with the guts to throw down $100+ for the vinyl... I know if I were able to, I'd probably be out there bidding against you.

It continues to blow my mind that we've gotten a re-pressing of the Acoustic Citsuoca EP, where there wasn't really any demand for more because there were still some on shelves... but these two albums, many years out of print, fetching $100+ on eBay, haven't been supplied to meet an obvious demand.

Does anybody have any thoughts on how I can determine whether my copy of At Dawn is autentico? Does it even matter? (To me, yes!).  Would people actually be making knock-offs?  Sounds weird, but I guess I'm HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS about the fact that the same E-bay seller repeatedly auctions off copies of At Dawn with the bonus disc.  I've seen at least 4 copies in the last year sold by the same person (sandinistar), not including the one that I bought.  If they were coming out of Louisville or something maybe I wouldn't be as surprised, but this person is selling from way over in Japan. They usually show up every 3 months or so (there's one up right now).  Maybe i'm just evil.  And mean.  :-/

I certainly will, I also agree with you. I have so many copies of shit, it's crazy. I think I have 5 Acoustic Citsuocas... A red signed copy, A red to listen to, A red to keep nice and safe and a gold and blue to keep nice and safe!

Don't get it wrong though folks, I wanted to buy a new recorder for taping shows so I decided to part with one of my "Harold and Maude" LPs that was limited to 2500 and just sold it for 222 bucks!
Vinyl has value! I just bought it this winter.

My At Dawn is blue and green also.

Okay, I  just saw that somebody is selling a few "The New Blue/Green" At Dawn on Ebay, Buy It Now style. I just bought one.  We'll see.

EDIT: I see they also have TTF in new Red/Yellow vinyl.  Maybe they simply have their wires crossed and I just bough another AD... :-[

Mine was purchased at the local record store.

I had no idea it would cause such a fuss!

Now if only they'll get TTF in...

Yes, when you open the jacket the lyrics are there including Chills, but my discs, and I'm looking at them now, are definitely red and orange.  What the hell is going on here?

Exactly... I love "special" things like limited edition numbers and exotic colors, but these retailers are just milking it for everything its worth without any added effort or actually giving us anything different. They've flooded the market with "variations" described as "limited", "super limited", "very limited", etc... but what's so limited about something you've re-pressed four or five times?

I'm sure on occasion I'll pick up a really cool article, like the New Year's picture vinyl, but I'm pretty much done with the color variations.

I got It Still Moves in the mail yesterday!!!!!

Totally pumped.  I recently moved into a new house with a friend of mine (he's renting his spare bed room to me) and I have had my stereo/speakers/turntable all sitting in the middle of his non-living living room.  Well last night I took all of my stuff down to his real living room and hooked it up, powered up my turntable and set that needle down on that wonderful piece of wax.

Its not 180 gram but its at least higher quality than your standard record.  The sound was good, no problems from what I could tell, it came with a cd version so that got thrown in my car for traveling Jacket needs.  I'm glad I finally got ISM on vinyl, I almost paid $75 for it 7 months ago so in the long wrong patience saved me some loot.

Where did you get it.  I didn't even know it was repressed!  Kick ass.  My collection will now be complete.  (Well, just the main five albums anyway.)

I had originally ordered mine from Acousticsounds for 19.99 before Amazon even put that price up, it didn't seem right to me plus AS is much more reliable about shipping records so I stuck with them.  Well I am glad I did because I got it a little early.  I listened to it again last night and noticed a slight ticking before a song, not sure if my record had a little fuzz on it or if it was due to a slight warp, I was too lazy to get up and inspect and it went away during the song.

I recieved my ISM vinyl last night.   It is sooo sweet looking.  The big pictures are gorgeous.  I now have all 5 studio albums, OTR single, Run Thru single, and Acoustic Citsuoca.  I think all I need is OKONOKOS, and then of course some of the rare singles if I ever find them.

A couple of questions since I'm new to this vinyl thing.

1)  It did not have lyrics in it.  Is this typical?   Did the original pressing have lyrics?  I love the lyrics of ISM more than any other album so I was a bit dissapointed.

2)  At least half of the vinyl I have gotten via the mail has had bent corners.  Is this common?  Also, the free CD that came with ISM actually caused some small light scratches (buff marks?) on the vinyl.   Will this cause problems when I play it?  (I still don't have a record player. ;D)

Thanks for the input.

i have the ISM vinyl and i know exactly what you're talking about with the light scratches/buff marks.  i have an original pressing as well and it has the same issue.  no worries though, the marks haven't affected the sound quality in any perceptible way.  no lyrics came with the original either.

once you get your record player, i recommend cranking your stereo and playing rollin' back as your record player's virgin groove - it is fucking GORGEOUS on vinyl

some people just dont know how to ship records, the packages are obviously going to get thrown around by the carriers, so they should package them more carefully and in a tougher box; standard LP boxes are too small to compensate for corner slams, there needs to be at least a .25" buffer around the records.

MOST of the vinyl I buy through mail arrives smashed, bent, dinged, sometimes warped or damaged in some way. Records are extremely fragile, but most people seem to think shipping it like a CD is fine, well its not.
Tower sucks. Every purchase I made from them has arrived in crap quality soft boxes, subsequently my stuff arrives damaged
