Title: Song vs. Song Tournament
Post by: xmascriminal on Oct 09, 2008, 07:28 PM
I was wondering if you guys would be into a MMJ song tournament. If so, every day I will post four new matchups as selected by a random number generator. We will all vote for our favorites. The vote will be up from 6 PM on the first day until 6 PM on the second. At that time, four new matchups will begin. As we clear the preliminary stages, songs that won will battle others that won until we crown a champion, basically a march madness setup. I think that it would be best to only faceoff songs from the five main albums so that less experienced/obsessive fans can play too. If you like the idea, we'll begin Monday. If you have suggestions/do not want to do this at all, please post here. Thanks.

If it's just from the 5 LP's, how is Cobra gonna stomp that ass into the final four?

We can include EPs if you guys want. I'd like to see where Cobra ends up too. I just thought it'd be better for the casual fans if we didn't. But if you guys would prefer it, I'm up for adding them in.

Sounds like fun.  I think we should include at least the highlights from the EPs.  It's Been a Great 3 or 4 years is my dark horse.  ;)

I'd feel better if you had more than nine posts, but I'll vote for as long as you keep it up.

But at least xmascriminal isn't bitching about something or trying to buy/sell tickets.  We all had 9 posts at one time or another.

I'm in.

You need 64 songs right?  Or are you going to have a "play in" game? ;)

I think that would be the most interesting game there; choose the "worst" 2 MMJ songs.

Okay, I've added in the three songs from the Split single and those from Chocolate and Ice. So that's what it'll be: the five LPs and the two EPs. We'll begin monday at 6 PM.

...a little more obscure..."The Jacket Bracket" or "Jacket Bracket Attack"

What's up?

Okay, here's the latest. Including the EPs, it comes out a little weird. Basically, one song would skip a round because it would have no competition. It really doesn't alter it too much but if that's going to be a problem, we could eliminate the EPs from contention. Whatever you guys prefer. It would be simpler with 64 songs instead of the 72 I have. If you guys want, there's room for one song in that 64 that's not on the albums (I was just going to include Chills since it was the extra track on iTunes), so we could vote on which EP song should be in the competition or we could just put in Cobra, since that would obviously win.

Since the LPs total 64 songs sans the instrumentals on TTF and At Dawn that would be perfect for a 64 team bracket

Afterwards we could do a NIT-esque tourney including lesser knowns: Choco & Ice (minus 3 or 4 Years), Xmas Fiasco Style (6 songer), Early Recordings Vols. 1 & 2,  Off The Record Single (UK version minus the Off The Records), Run Thru (minus Run Thru), Split EP (minus Year in Review and Translation) At Dawn/TTF Demos Package (minus L.O.Z. Intro and Magic Man)
Well that might sound really convoluted and confusing, but it totals 64 songs by my count. Also doesn't include Okonokos but does the demos package, so could be tweaked if necessary. Anways, just a thought.

The LPs actually only total 63 songs. So, for the 64th song, do you guys want to include Cobra, Chills or something else? The guy above me is right, it is much simpler without all the EP tracks.
Title: Re: Song vs. Song Tournament
Post by: aMillionDreams on Oct 10, 2008, 08:45 PM
Let's do a play-in game between Chills and Cobra.  I'll bet Cobra wins, but for me that would be a tough choice.
Title: Re: Song vs. Song Tournament
Post by: xmascriminal on Oct 10, 2008, 09:28 PM
I think maybe we should go with Chills since it was on the iTunes version of Z. Cobra would go really far but it would be kind of weird to include that and not include other EP songs. At least with Chills, we have an excuse.
Title: Re: Song vs. Song Tournament
Post by: getinthevan on Oct 10, 2008, 10:46 PM
Cobra has been put in the live show far more times than Chills has.  Especially on this last tour.

The same excuse could also be used for How Could I Know. And I know a lot of people who like that just as much as Chills.

I've gotta give my vote to Where to Begin. It's probably the most important (and overlooked) non-album release.
Title: Re: Song vs. Song Tournament
Post by: xmascriminal on Oct 10, 2008, 11:01 PM
I thought Where to Begin might be a good option too, and I did consider that they've been playing Cobra pretty often.  Lil Billy's an option since it's neutral (never on an album or an EP) but a good percentage of people might still know it. Including Good Intentions would make it even, but that doesn't make much sense.

Not to get ahead of ourselves, but if a second tournament is done with non-LP songs, and since the NIT is 32 teams anyways:

1.Can You See The Hard Helmet On My Head? (Chocolate And Ice)
2.Sooner (Chocolate And Ice)
3.Cobra (Chocolate And Ice)
4.Holy (Chocolate And Ice)
5.Sweetheart (Chocolate And Ice)
6.I Just Wanted To Say (Does Xmas Fiasco Style)
7.Xmas Time Is Here (Does Xmas Fiasco Style)
8.Weeks Go By Like Days (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
9.What Will I Do? (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
10.Downtown (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
11.I Just Wanted To Be Your Friend (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
12.Time Never Gets (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
13.Isobella w/ The White Umbrella (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
14.Josta Dreams And Bitter Hands (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
15.When Will They Come?? (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
16.Somebody Cares About The Maestro (Early Recordings Vol. 1)
17.Tonite I Want 2 Celebrate w/ You! (Early Recordings Vol. 2)
18.Nothing 2 Me (Early Recordings Vol. 2)
19.I Won't Cry! (Early Recordings Vol. 2)
20.That Someone Else Was You (Early Recordings Vol. 2)
21.Good Nights and Happy Trails!!!!! (Early Recordings Vol. 2)
22.How Could I Know (Off The Record Single)
23.Chills (Off The Record Single)
24.Breathin' (Run Thru)
25.O Is The One That Is Real (Split)
26.How Do You Know (Split)
27.Come Closer (Split)
28.Lil' Billy (Demos Package)
29.Where To Begin (Elizabethtown)
30.R.I.P.V.G. (Heartbreakin' Man EP)
31.Epichord (Louisville Is For Lovers, vol. 6)
32.I Can't Wait (Not recorded, various live)
33.Wonderful (The Way I Feel) (Not recorded, various live)

This removes any covers and songs that would eventually make albums. Assuming one of these 33 songs would get bumped to the LP tourney, it would leave 32 songs, or a play in game would be needed. Suggestions definitely welcome.

Great job lime. We'll definitely do that after the album tournament. I've never heard Epichord or I Can't Wait. In the meantime, I'm thinking that we should go with Lil' Billy as #64, becuase it's neutral but it's on an album. Thoughts?
Title: Re: Song vs. Song Tournament

I would either include "Chills" because it is on the Z vinyl or "Cobra" because it deserves to be with the big boys. A play-in game may be necessary.
Title: Re: Song vs. Song Tournament
Post by: xmascriminal on Oct 11, 2008, 01:45 AM
I think we should save Cobra so that it can be king of the b-sides. What I'm planning is to crown a single champion, so we'll have a faceoff between the winners of the two tournaments.

I think the important thing to remember is we are voting on the studio versions of these songs, not how much we like it live.  Example: the studio Run Thru is not as good as it has become live.

Really?  I was thinking of it as a song, taking into account the studio version, live versions, and the kitchen sink.  Or maybe not focusing on a performance of the song but on the composition.  That may be tough to separate especially for those without knowledge of songwriting.  I guess I could do it your way.
Title: Re: Song vs. Song Tournament

Personally, I think that a song doesn't reaveal its true quality until you hear it live. It's too easy to manipulate things in the studio. A live performance is like an initiation rite. I didn't realize how good Sec Walkin', Highly Suspicious and Run Thru were until I saw them live.

Well, I don't want anyone to think that I don't love the studio version of Run Thru, but to me it is the "Let's run down there and bang one of those heffers" version, as the Okonokos version is the "Let's walk down there and bang them all!"

It's kinda tough, really...and I guess everyone can vote how they want, but when we were forced to choose between Heartbreakin' Man and Wordless Chorus, I went with WC because it I remember being impacted by it moreso than HM.  However, after hearing HM at the Louisville show, it blew my fooking mind!  So....  :-/

Maybe we can take this all the way to One Big final four matchup. It could consist of:
1. The winner of the 64 LP's bracket
2. The winner of the 32 B sides bracket
3. The winner of the Losers (from the 64 LP's bracket)
4. The winner of the Losers (from the 32 B sides bracket)

***of course you would vote for your favorite in all four brackets.

This would make for an all inclusive, balls out, kick ass tourny. Everyone who is crushed over their team/song getting the early boot would still have a hope for the reckoning in the ultimate final four matchup. How 'bout it...do YOU have the stones for this kinda shit!?  ;)

This would make for an all inclusive, balls out, kick ass tourny. Everyone who is crushed over their team/song getting the early boot would still have a hope for the reckoning in the ultimate final four matchup. How 'bout it...do YOU have the stones for this kinda shit!?  ;)

Yeah, let's do it. Definitely. And after that's all over, we can do a least favorite tournament too. I'm more than willing to do this stuff for as long as it takes. My schedule might get a little more sporadic around Christmas time, but there's not even a question now. We're doing this. I don't need any help. I'm having too much fun. :D :D :D :D

I love every idea except for the "least favorite" vote.

I was planning on leaving whether we do that one or not up to you guys. I personally think it'd be really interesting. However, we'll definitely do what Easy Way suggested.

Yeah, I'm not comfortable with the 'least favorite' game. The way I see it is that MMJ is a progressive movement. Bringing a counter system into such a wonderful place will not deter the machine, but could bring about some unwanted {{{vibes}}} to our land. Also, you never know how someone may take such a criticism on their 'holy grail' tune being the least favorite. The boys are saving lives so I say we keep it moving forward.  :)

QuoteMaybe we can take this all the way to One Big final four matchup. It could consist of:
1. The winner of the 64 LP's bracket
2. The winner of the 32 B sides bracket
3. The winner of the Losers (from the 64 LP's bracket)
4. The winner of the Losers (from the 32 B sides bracket)

But also keep in mind that we are all voting on personal opinion. We are all big boys and girls, and I can promise my feelings won't be hurt if mine is low or last. People not liking is not going to change my opinion of loving it. I say to do the least favorite.

Right on...I'm just not hip to it, but I'm having a blast with this one. Very grown up attitude, btw.  ;D

After I posted it, I thought it seemed a bit assy in tone. But, I'm glad to see the humor was seen in it. I'm not even sure what being grown up is thesedays.. :D
