To me, this song is the crux of the MMJ live set. All the other tunes are always awesome and great, and just as amazing as Steam Engine, but there's just SOMETHING about it
I think of it as MMJ's Dark Star
I'm a bit worried it's been showing up less and less in the setlists lately, although Dondante seems to be slowly replacing it as the big long jam of the night
Seven shows and waiting...

Oh yeah...hands down my favorite MMJ tune. It's my anthem...truly epic. 8-)
Loved the Dark Star reference. Was definitely pleasantly surprised to hear it last night - must be why we didn't get Dondante.

Wow! I thought I had it bad having to wait until my third show. You must go to New York Tom for NYE. It will be a guarantee. I will chip in $10. No joke. Come on people, let's start a fund. The Tom needs Steam campaign.
holy shit, there's now way I can cover my own way to NYC for that, but if you guys actually did miraculously raise some fundage (even just some help) you can be damn sure I'll make it for that.
Sweet Holy Jesus.
Listen to it most every morning when I first get to work.

I listen to it most evenings before I go to sleep :)
I felt bad at the Boston show, the friend I was with loves MMJ, but Steam Engine is his fav tune and I kept reassuring him "they play it all the time dude! they'll definitely do it"
It was on the setlist too! cut due to time restraints....
i'm introducing some good wisconsin friends to mmj in advance of the upcoming milwaukee show ... the first song i suggested they fall into was the okonokos take on 'steam engine' ... magnificant song, jaw dropping performance ...
i was in boston, and yeah 'steam' would have been swell to hear. but we still got 'evelyn' and 'run thru' (which seems to have become expendable on this leg of the tour) ...
you know what, i havent seen it live yet either... getting cobra was just fine but ill hope to have my mind blown by steam on NYE...
also if yall are game to send tom to NYC on NYE than lets do it. Big things like that are always cool and moving...
where is he from?
damn Tom, only seen them once (second time coming soon) and they played it.

i need help too....got my concert ticket, now just need a 500$ plane ticket.
Out of the four times I've seen them, they've only performed "Steam Engine" once -- but it was with Andrew Bird guesting. To this day, that is my favorite performance of theirs.
Maybe this will help till you see it live. Beautiful:

for as long as i've been posting here it's been my absolute favorite. meant a lot to me especially back in high school, when i spent many a late summer night just driving around with steam engine on repeat.
took me about six years to finally catch it live. even went to see them open for pearl jam couple years back, but we got stuck in traffic and as we were running through hartford to the venue we heard the last strains of steam engine barely audible in the distance. i was crushed. took me two more years after that to finally catch it at Radio City, which was really special
I love it so much even watched the version from OKO before work yesterday. Also, just look at my signature, it has been there awhile.
when they played this song at Bonnaroo this year... as the rain poured down... that was one of the highlights of my life.

my husband and I got married two weeks ago: Steam Engine was our first dance.
I'm also reeeeally hoping to hear it NYE....
I really think this song has a great chance of winning the Jacket Bracket Attack. It's been my prediction since I first came up with the idea. I just don't see anything beating it. My guess, it'll be up against One Big Holiday for the final match.

Congratulations and, wow, great song for first dance.

I can only imagine. That would have been awesome.
It has made me cry more than once.

when i saw them play Steam Engine in telluride CO it stopped the rain and everyone cheered. This song's so epic it can control the weather!
Well, just to make some people jealous, i was at Red Rock and they played BOTH Dondante, AND Steam Engine :D, needless to say i was in a state of euphoria, i just hope the person who was standing in front of me did not notice the stain on the back of thier coat.... :-[
