If you had a childhood, you'll remember Shel Silverstein's classic books "The Giving Tree," and "Where The Sidewalk Ends." Bobby Bare Jr. and his pops roped in a few friends, including My Morning Jacket, for a Tribute to Shel Silverstein, to be released on Sugar Hill Records in 2009. The rest of the acts are pretty awesome, too:
Emmylou Harris
Black Keys
George Jones & Ray Price
Allison Krauss
Band of Horses
Dr. Dog
Andrew Bird
Kris Kristofferson (backed by Silver Jews)
********************
I don't know much about him, but aren't some of his songs pretty dark and very non-childlike?
And "The Giving Tree" is one of my favorite books of all-time, as I imagine it is for a lot of people.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!
What a great list of contributors!
I can't fucking wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a cast!!!!!!!!!!
this is awesome....how can you not like Shel Silverstein?
There was another article that said MMJ was backing Bobby Bare Sr. on a track and that Bobby Bare Jr. may be doing "Daddy What If" with his daughter.
Oh yeah and I can't fucking wait either!!!
Here it is:

QuoteBobby: My Morning Jacket covered a song called "Lullabys, Legends and Lies". They backed up my dad on a song called "The Golden Kiss."
Those of you not familiar with Shel's adult work, welcome to a weird, wild world. This comp looks like it should be a great introduction. I'm a huge and BBJ fan so this is amazing. They do the best tributes: The Band, Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons, Shel Silverstein. Damn.

Check out comedian/singer/songwriter Pat Dailey. He was good friends with Shel and some of the songs they did together are.....not safe for kids.
Only person missing on this project is M. Ward, but I cannot wait to hear this.
I once saw this at a used vinyl shop here in Portland. It was cash only, and I had no dough.....still think about it from time to time. Shel, well, one cannot deny that he liked the wacky side of life.

I am not sure how my child imagination would have blossomed without the permission from his poetry. I love Shel Silverstein!
Magic
by Shel Silverstein
Sandra's seen a leprechaun
Eddie touched a troll
Laurie danced with witches once
Charlie found some goblins' gold
Donald heard a mermaid sing
Susy spied an elf
But all the magic I have known
I've had to make myself

Ha! Nice find WIZ...
I can't wait!!!
On a different note...does anybody think Allison Krauss would every sing with the boys?

Not out of the realm of possibilities, but I suspect a collab with Emmylou is more likely.
Oh, and freakin at the freaker's ball is a GREAT album!
