Okay, so it's clear from live recordings that both of these songs have been around since the very early days of MMJ.
My question is does anyone know the specifics as to why neither of them were included on a release until It Still Moves?
I assume the band probably just felt the songs didn't "fit" with the first two LPs, but still, if I wrote two amazing songs like OBH and IWSYS, I would want to show the world as soon as I could!
I remember an interview with Jim James after It Still Moves was released in which he talked about this. He said that some of the songs had been around since the time of At Dawn, but as they started putting that record together, there were songs that were definitely "labeled" as "3rd record."
I found that while looking for an explanation of the end of Steam Engine, which is a mystery that will never be solved in our lifetimes. If you search for that it's somewhere on the site.
It's all part of the masterplan. I remember I couldn't believe it when OBH wasn't on AD, but it really wouldn't have fit. There's an At dawn demos version of OBH that reflects that.
BTW, those two have been around since the beginning as was Just One Thing.

I knew there was at least another song I was forgetting to include, it was Just One Thing
yeah, the OBH from the KVRX radio session (where the Tyrone from Chap. 2 comes from) is definitely weaker than it has shown to be

Don't get me wrong, they rocked it out back in the day, too. I'm talking about a studio outtake of when they recorded OBH for the AD sessions. Way too sleepy for such an energy-filled song.
Just One Thing is harder to catch because they didn't play that one out but it appeared on the Heartbreakin' Man EP in 1999 as "There's Just One Thing".
EDIT: Check out 10/27/00 on the archive for a great early version of OBH.

Dylan, do you have this earlier version of OBH around? I'm sure there's a lot of people who'd be interested in hearing what you're talking about.
Could you imagine it still moves without those songs? I don't want to.

The one/two combo of those two is basically the crux of the album. Actually, IWSYS might be my favorite My Morning Jacket song. Definitely in the top 5 at the very least.
i would love to hear OBH from the at dawn demos if anyone had it or knew where to hear it

I'll try and post it later tonight.

It's going to take more digging than I expected. Give me a day or two.
take your time....salutations my good man
Okay. Here's the track that I was talking about. It was given to me by KC Guetig (drummer#2) on the night of the planetarium show (9-9-01). I don't know exactly when this version was recorded. Sound quality is not that great because it was originally on a cassette tape (remember those?), which I wore out and partially taped over before I digitally transferred it:

Thanks very much for this aMD! :)
