Wait... what? lol
I thought the Vegas show was cancelled last year.
I'm guessing this is the EP that has been rumored...??? I googled Ryan Pickett and got nothing...
I guess, all things considered, this will be an excellent pre-birthday present for me! ;)
Candles & panties? These guys need to fire whoever comes up with the titles to their EPs.
Or give them a raise... ;)
Seriously, what is this? I think I want it.
I thought it was a joke when I read it the first ten times... ;D

I wish I knew...well, the 13th isn't that far away so we won't have to wait long.
Is it a video EP?
CC...help! :)
I don't know either. I come back from a meeting and there it is. Candles and Panties. An easy listening video? Music to make love to? What kind of panties are we talking about?

I had good intentions of working today and this EP notice has totally derailed that effort.... ;D :)
The guys are up to thier old tricks. I bet Pickett is Carl . You know, how Jim James is Sec Welkin...I think we are in for a surprise here.

I hear that. I am supposed to help a friend move in a kegerator after work, but now I'll probably put off my work to the last minute, wind up staying late, and piss off a bunch of people by keeping them from cold, fresh, beer
Yeah...Im going to go ahead and suggest we refer to this as "C&P"..."panties", for reasons unbeknownst to me, is just one of those words Im not crazy about saying out loud...Yeah, I dont know either.

I'm only 26, but saying it makes me feel like a dirty old man
maybe this is in some way related to the Jim + Carl solo show that took place at Vegoose in '06. maybe it will be a handful of live cuts a la acoustic citsuoca.
did that show even take place at the palms though?

Glad I'm not the only one that's a little confused -- perhaps that was the intent.
That picture looks like Carl, though.
If it were new material .... that would be swell.

Like the best easter egg on the intarwebs.
They should not have used the descriptives "touch" AND "deep" in a blurb which contains candles and panties. Panties, panties, panties.

Wait... that thong is rear view? Damn... I've been wearing them wrong all this time!

:o ;D
I have spent waaay too much time on this board at work. I decided to buckle down and get some solid work done today. After accomplishing that I decided to treat myself to a board visit and I come to find this little surprise. Happy about it and bitter that I have to wait (ha -- what? 5 days?) and the only information I gathered from reading the posts is that most of the guys don't like to say panties. Thanks.
Panties panties panties panties.
I like this idea of being some live cuts from Carl/Jim.
Candles and Panties, OH MY!
WTF is going on. I certainly cannot concentrate on anything, and I mean ANYHTING, until I figure out what is going on!
The only show I know of from Vegas is Vegoose, and the one that got cancelled. Or did it?
Or is this similar to the "Braintree, MASS" show.
AGAIN I SAY, WTF!
Nice, the 13th is merely days away!
Where was that show supposed to be that was cancelled. I have forgotten.

i think for me it is too. i've bought apps from the itunes store, but i'm firmly against all-digital downloads because i feel it discourages artists from making high-quality, properly mixed albums such as MMJ does.
Though this argument was made when CDs replaced tapes and vinyl.

actually, Apple announced last week that about 70 or 80% of the iTunes store is now DRM-free and they're working with the rest to get it 100% so by the end of March-ish, I think. My details may be a bit off, but it's something along those lines. Seeing as the Jacket is aligned with Sony now due to corporate whatnots, I'd say you've got a pretty decent chance of downloading this DRM-free next week.
w00trawk.
And concurres, Candles and Panties is easily the best EP name we've seen a long time. Promotions abound!

Oh, it's not the DRM that bothers me (I'm in law school to better understand such evil urges of the industry, and to make sure the labels don't claim the bootlegs as their own to sell like with the GD tours). It's just the engineering of albums. Highly compressed MP3s will be the norm, and the thought that goes into what track goes where could become less frequent.
I actually rely on MMJ to preserve this tradition.
...and i still think that if anything, it's raises will be given from the candles and panties.
I was thinking, maybe this performance hasn't even happened yet. But then again, it does say '08. So confused.

so are they telling us to rock out with our cocks out?

That would be Jim. I say they keep him in the band. ;)
This is crazy and I cannot offer any clarity. When I first read it I thought it was going to be a live podcast, but that doesn't seem to be the case. My best guess is that it's from the Jim and Carl show at Vegoose. I'm pretty sure that show hasn't surfaced yet. I hope there's new material, but as Kory said, if it's actually live we would have at least heard of the tunes before.

I'm going to call it now and say that this isnt going to be from Vegas. Weather or not it's live we'll see. Why no tracklisting? :-?
It's not beyond them to put together a concept album, even if it is an EP. In fact, now I hope it is a concept album.
Everything about this is awesome...whatever it is, and the fact that we don't know makes is even awesomer.

I wouldn't be suprised if in fact this wasn't live.
What would lead you to that conclusion? Sure, the rest of the description is pretty fanciful, but "Live in Las Vegas" seems pretty straightforward.
QuoteWhat would lead you to that conclusion? Sure, the rest of the description is pretty fanciful, but "Live in Las Vegas" seems pretty straightforward.
So does "Live at the startime Pavillion, Braintree Mass.", but thats not where acoustic citsuoca was recorded. That however is live. I don't know what I'm talking about, other than to expect the unexpected when it comes to this band.
What if it something Ryan mixed and it's not even the band? Just to throw a loop in everyone's thinking.

My guess is that this is definitely Jacket related and since they're bringing up Vegas it's probably fun and something unexpected (duh, on that one). Anyway. I hope we're in for a treat.

Oh that "chick" was Sarah Elizabeth Whitehead (don't know if she dropped Whitehead or not, they are now divorced). And I don't remember Jim playing the omnichord, I think it was a drum machine and he was just singing at the mic.
I'm pretty sure it's the Bozeman show that never was.
I'm SO SO excited! I'm thinking it could be some live material from somewhere other than las vegas? Because wasn't Acoustic Citsuoca not really a live show from where it said it was on the cover? If that makes any sense? :o

Well, I hope that it's new, original studio tunes...leftovers from the EU writing/recording sessions. That would be awesomest. 8-)
Though, I was thinking...their show in Aukland, NZ is on the 16th...flights/timing COULD allow for a quick, live outing in Vegas to be recorded (earlier?) and thrown on to itunes on the 13th. I DO think it's just some wonderful MMJ foolishness, but I'm open to anything happening at this point.
Whatever...it's fun to speculate, and will be exciting to find out! :D

Could it possibly be the Ear-X-Tacy performance in Louisville last year? I do recall that there was a possibility that the show would be released in the future if the recording went well. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part since I was there, but it would be sweet. The entire Evil Urges from start to finish plus a few others.

Maybe it is studio work that's already been done, or a concert at that will take place this weekend. That would be short notice though. And if it was a show in front of an audience, I think we would have heard.

And I'm thinkin' I wouldn't stand a chance against her. Have you seen her bicep? Tell me have you seen it? ;)
QuoteHee! I think I'm safe in speaking for both myself and Pennylane when I say we're definitely not jealous of any woman whose bicep is larger than our torsos. No, we are not prone to exaggeration. :P

But STILL jealous!!

You know that Jim would love watching that fight. Then he'd write a song about it and release a mysterious EP called "Scratches and Bite-marks"
Meow...phisss...phisss CAT FIGHT!
That is not a bicept...I see no muscle. It's more like a thigh. ;D
To set the record straight (somewhat at least), I've purchased itunes only EP's before and they're always live. When and where is the question.
EDIT: it looks like yinz figured it out, i didn't read every post.
Why did the Vegas show get axed? I can't remember, but may be the band went to Vegas anyway and did I private show or went under a different name.
Is it Monday yet?
QuoteMeow...phisss...phisss CAT FIGHT!

Well, technically we all have biceps. :)
But I will give you that it more closely resembles a thigh. Like, maybe Jim Plunkett's.
QuoteThat's definately Carl.
I agree.
So what songs do we want on this EP? New, old, mix between the two?
I hope it's a mix of new and old. The old songs that really impressed me this tour were
War Begun
Phone Went West
Dancefloors
Cobra/Rollin' Back combo at Berkeley
of course, the
Dondante/Smokin'/Touch Me pt. 2/Run Thru
back-to-back-to-back-to-back
was a nice run, too.
I'm seriously hoping they're all new. Please please please. I can't wait!

Does anyone know what time they will put this up? I know BIGEvil said he will stay up till midnight. I would like to get it before work so I got some New New to listen to.
I know, right? Is it live tommorow night, instantly available? I think it's time for more information! :)
i'll be up til midnight, then if it's as relaxing as it says... MMJ can lull me to sleep with some winter cold goodness!
Midnight Eastern I might be able to do. ;D

I'm guessing it is them in that vegas studio doing an "AOL sessions" type performance of some of their slower songs:
Thank You Too
Look At You
Smokin'
and maybe 1 or 2 new ones
either that or "Trapped in the Closet"
I would secretly be thrilled with "Trapped in the Closet".

QuoteIf you log into the british version of itunes, then the EP is already up. cool tracklisting!
Can you post it (the tracklist) please? :) :D
Sure.
1. Tonight I Want To Celebrate With You
2. Dear Wife
3. Knot Comes Loose
4. From Nashville To Kentucky
5. They Ran
6. Thank You Too
Is Dear Wife a new song?
Do we think the UK price is gonna be comparable the US price?
Not sure, but I think the prices will be similar. The British version is selling for 4.74 pounds, which is equivalent to around 7 dollars.
30 sec clips! ;)
the 30 second clip of Dear Wife sounded like it could be an original, and a google of "Dear Wife" and the brief lyrics I picked up didn't yield anything
QuoteSure.

3. Knot Comes Loose
4. From Nashville To Kentucky

Is Dear Wife a new song?
yes it is.
also should mention, it sounds REALLY good. the recording, I mean. All the instruments are really crisp, Jim's voice sounds lovely as usual
It's not a cover of Tilt's "Dear Wife" is it?
No my darling have no fear
I'll see you by and by
I trust in my commander
And my brothers in arms
The chaplain reassures us
That God is on our side
And I will write you every day
I will keep you informed
Dear Wife
I can feel you arms about my neck
Life like
The image of you crying at the gate
Dear Wife
Your photo is a shield over my heart
My Life
Depends on the memory of your face
We landed on the shore today
No enemy in sight
We are strong and confident
Our training is complete
We set up camp
And cleaned our guns
And sang away the night
And yours by far the lovliest
Of all the pictures seen
I can barely write today
How things have gone awry
A man who was a friend to me
Is dead and many more
I had to do a dreadful thing
To make it back alive
Why am I the only one
To send back into war?
So tell me dear
The color of your eyes
I cannot remember
The glimmer of your hair
You were a guiding light
Emblazoned on my mind
But death had led me far away
And I don't seem to care
Dear God I am betrayed today
My brothers are insane
Our leaders have abandoned us
And turned us loose to kill
They behave like animals
And I behave the same
Why should I try to survive
When I don't have the will?
Dear Wife
The tempo of my death is beating down
Why Hide?
Relief awaits me, I cannot escape
Dear Wife
Your photo is a dead thing to me now
My Life
Is wasted like the memory of your face

I've been listening to it bit by bit during 24 commercials.

cool
why can"t I find it!!!
Search for "Live from Las Vegas at the Palms" and several should come up.
Just go to the MMJ section, and it's listed as an album on there.
i had to refresh or something, I found it, thanks!
Bo gets sick in "Dear Wife"!!
Starting in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1....... 8-)
Good to see "Knot Comes Loose" finally get the credit it deserves, that new outro is incredible. "Nashville to KY" is a song that needed to be re-released with Carl's added sax part as well, so so good.
I can't help but wonder why it is that I have listened to all of these songs at least a thousand times (excluding dear wife) , but it somehow it feels like this is the first time I have ever heard these songs. They bring the heat in a new and interesting way every time. It never fails.
Good Lord, Carl. That sax in Nashville to KY made me wish I was deadlocked in a cozy snuggle. Thank you.
Holy crap.
the recording sounds amazing. it's got such a good vibe to it. good shit, was expecting just some solid versions of the tunes but this is great. I jizzed in my chest a little. they need to do these releases more often. good shit. again, can't get over how good the production is on this. everyone shines, especially bo and carl. good shit.
I can't wait to listen!!!
Oh yes! thirty seconds in- I'm already in love
Fantastic!!!

Thanks for the treat, boys!
Holy shit Nash to Kentucky is amazing damn.
I don't have i-tunes & don't want it on my PC...what to do?!! :(
So is this worth breaking my philosophical objections to purchasing music off iTunes? Is it worth holding off for some physical copy at some point in the future?
QuoteGood Lord, Carl. That sax in Nashville to KY made me wish I was deadlocked in a cozy snuggle. Thank you.
He hooked it up like that when they played it in Nashville. He threw his guitar on his back and jammed it out. The production on these songs is excellent. I'm guessing Ryan did it by the tag on the homepage.
QuoteSo is this worth breaking my philosophical objections to purchasing music off iTunes? Is it worth holding off for some physical copy at some point in the future?
I thought an EP by nature was vinyl.
I'm not into itunes either but if it's the only way to get this......
yeah i broke my solemn promise to myself to never purchase anything off itunes.
I think it is hilarious how itunes gets it's genres. With Tennessee Fire and At Dawn, they put either "country" or "Alt country up". I think It still moves was somethiing like "southern rock" or "rock." Z was definitely "Alternative." I believe Evil Urges had "Alternative as well." This EP has "Alternative and punk."
Funny how a band can progress through so many genres over 8 years and still have unbelievable fan base.
I'm not sure if it can be considered a true unit of measurement, but my drive to work is exactly one 'LIVE in las vegas'. Nice.
I refuse to use the itunes categories for genre. To me, alternative and punk are two entirely different things, and I try to keep my "indie" as truly indie. I don't want my Groovie Ghoulies (punk) mixed win with Flaming Lips (alternative) because they just don't blend.
I just put all MMJ as alt-country. regardless of album
QuoteI'm not sure if it can be considered a true unit of measurement, but my drive to work is exactly one 'LIVE in las vegas'. Nice.
So is mine...it's now my new commuting album.
I also want to say that it sounds so nice. Yes, it's mainly old songs, but they are all done in a new manner. I would just like to know when it was recorded. It says "Live" so it must be from a show, right? Anyways, this is such a perfect way to start the year...

Don't forget people, once you burn the itunes files to a CD, you can do whatever you want with them. You know, those shiny metal discs with the hole in the middle.
They will probably transfer directly into another Itunes, but it will ask for your password when you do so. However, that may not even be true anymore, because they should have eliminated the copy protection from them already. Especially something new like this.

Hearing "They Ran" and "Nashville" in a new studio format is really interesting. Although I love the basic, low-quality sound of TTF, these songs really let you hear how they would sound if they were recorded today.
By the way, was anyone else dissapointed when "Nashville to Kentucky" ended? The guitar comes in like its about to solo or take off, and then it just ends....definitely my only complaint. They should have added another minute or two.

Maybe this was a private party, so maybe a band member (looking at you, Bo) or a relative of one got married??? Just a thought...
I read an article that said it was recorded "last year." Doesn't really narrow it down, but it was probably done, pre-Chicago at least.

So we know for sure it wasn't in the past two weeks.

just bought it, starting to listen now. How does everyone like Dear Wife??
I did notice he didn't hold the notes like he usually does on Tonite or do the shouts on They Ran. So I'm with BH, I think this was a couple weeks pre-Chicago. Maybe a little gift to fans who didn't see them in Europe.
Quotejust bought it, starting to listen now. How does everyone like Dear Wife??
Just listening to it for the first-time...to my ears, it's got that 50s-60s vibe with those harmonies. :) Gotta listen again, but I like. It's pop, it's cute.
I need more time to get to know my dear wife. I've only "spent time" with her twice, and I don't like to judge without several encounters. Both of us climaxed during each encounter so that's a good sign. I'll probably knock one out in the car on the way home and see how she sounds turned all the way on, I mean up.

Just wait until she askes you to go buy feminine hygiene products, Thats when REAL love is tested.
And if she ever wants to know if her ass looks fat in those jeans, Always say " No honey... you look HOT !!!!!"
Don't say " it looks like 2 pigs fighting over a milk dud"
Love "dear wife", it has a good MMJ vibe to it. To me, it does not sound like 2 halves. I think that is the only MMJ song I dont like b/c it sounds forced.
I always thought Nashville could only be made better by drums. And on "tonight", an omnichord with pedal steel. Only MMJ could pull this off. So far, so damn good.
I love this version of Nashville to Kentucky! I've been listening to a lot of jazz music lately so I'm really digging the keys and the sax. I like Dear Wife as well.

We're gonna need someone to write down the lyrics to Dear Wife. I may have some time to attempt it later tonight while we are lying in bed having a cigarette.
first thing that really stands out to me is just how good They Ran sounds, what a great version of this highly under-appreciated song.

and I'll be back there runnin'
?you'll, you'll be in love with me

sweet, sweet, dear heart,
well the veil of your kindness hits my brain,
we can find it in such violence,

yo vedder I just sent ya a PM.
The little, instrumental reprise at the end of Knot Comes Loose is beautiful. I just can't get over how great these songs sound, the production is outstanding. The playing in the songs is so light, and Jim's vocals come through SO clearly. Listen to the "t's" at the end of these lines in They Ran, just such a CLEAR VOCAL!
"She had a cigarette, asked if I had a light".
Jim's vocals aren't perfect, it really does seem to be a live take, and he doesn't have a booming concert mix to blend into. But he sounds wonderful, and overall I think he really kills it. The whole band does. I'm lovin' this SO MUCH!
(Yeah, I've listened to it a few times today ::))
Woo! I can't wait to listen to this!
anyone know the dates on the songs? i want to download it, but i maxed out my credit card on a rental car after i smashed the front of my car. ooops haha. so i figure i'll just listen to the versions from the shows they were at
i'll probably pick up the vinyl when/if it comes out. i love the new nashville to kentucky after hearing it in chicago so this will have to keep me satisfied since i don't think those shows were taped
Uhh, how the shit did I miss this thread? Someone want to condense this down and give me the Campbells Soup version of what the fark is going on?
a few things:
- there's no way they'll put this out on vinyl, itunes only
- perhaps Dear Wife is good enough to have been on Evil Urges
- Knot Comes Loose is underrated, they need to play it live more

I've developed Nashville to Kentucky OCD for this EP. Meaning: when the song ends, I click repeat. It's a reflex...I can't help it.
Beautiful song.

QuoteQuoteWe're gonna need someone to write down the lyrics to Dear Wife. I may have some time to attempt it later tonight while we are lying in bed having a cigarette.
this is the best I can do, some shit is too tough to tell. maybe you can fill in the gaps:
sweet, sweet, dear lord(heart)?,
I am out here somewhere working through the days
I imagine you are livin life,
but I must explain..
dear wife, I miss you always
aint it strange how quickly things can change.
I'll be out here wanting you
you'll be out there wanting me
and I'll be back there runnin'?
you'll, you'll be in love with me
(solo)
sweet, sweet, dear heart,
well the veil of your kindness hits my brain,
we can find it in such violence,
I must explain..
dear wife I love you always
aint it great how quickly things can change
I'll be out here wanting you
you'll be out there wanting me
and I'll be back there runnin'?
you'll be in love with me
I'll be out here wanting you
you'll be out there wanting me
and I'll be back there runnin'?
you'll, you'll be in love me
you'll be in love with me
I heard it differently.
sweet, sweet, dear where are you?
I am out here somewhere working through the days
I imagine you are livin life,
but I must explain..
dear wife, I miss you always
aint it strange how quickly things can change.
I'll be out here wanting you
you'll be out there wanting me
and I'll be back there runnin'?
you'll, you'll be in here lovin me.
(solo)
sweet, sweet, dear how are ya?
well the nail of your kindness hits my brain.
when you pounded it in with such violence,
I must exclaim..
dear wife I love you always
aint it great how quickly things can change
I'll be out here wanting you
you'll be out there wanting me
and I'll be back there runnin'?
you'll, you'll be in here lovin me

AWESOME!
I don't have a credit card or an iTunes account, but I need to hear Dear Wife. If somebody could send me a PM, I'd really appreciate it.
Is that an upright bass i'm hearing on They Ran? The song has a jazzy lounge feel to it this time around.

;D Bahaha, this cracked me up. It is definitely some baby makin' music.
I got it last night...cool vibe on it...I really like the older songs. The new song is pretty cool, def sounds like it was done around the time of Evil Urges.
I can't wait to hear this... internet down at home and don't want to download it at work. Obviously been thinking about it a lot as Mr Jim James appeared in my dreams to give me some candles and a pair of... um, panties. Weird. :o
I officially have 'Dear Wife' stuck in my head. Very nice. 8-)

QuoteI don't have a credit card or an iTunes account, but I need to hear Dear Wife. If somebody could send me a PM, I'd really appreciate it.
steps to get you on your way: (all without a credit card)
1. go to work or do some chores to get yerself $10 bucks.
2. Take that crispy ten spot down to your local target or walmart and buy an itunes gift card.
3. go to www.apple.com (see, I typed that for you... now you just gotta click)
4. iTunes accounts are free and don't require a credit card.
5. use your gift card to PURCHASE the tracks.
If you can't find somewhere else on the internet to get the album for free, WHY THE FUCK would you come to a site the band runs and ask for someone to GIVE it to you.
Are you stupid?
Do these feel more like soundchecks or live studio stuff to y'all?
Just to add to Kory's options.
Instead of doing chores:
1. Dig through your couch/car/pants for change.
2. Break-dance/Robot/Worm on a street corner for spare change.
3. Go to one of those Coinstar machines in the front of your grocery store.
4. Request iTunes Gift Card as payment.
5. Quit asking for shit for free.

Yes indeed, I did this right away. I suggest everyone else do the same so the name isn't lost. And how lame is an album title that starts with "iTunes"?
I think MMJ wanted to name this album Candles and Panties, but the producers (iTunes & The Palms) wanted their names on it. Candles and Panties is much more fitting.

My Morning Jacket:
Live from Las Vegas at the Palms
[iTunes; 2009]
Rating: 7.0
Just 10 years ago, My Morning Jacket were recording in abandoned grain silos, releasing albums on the tiny indie Darla, and otherwise living the life of any other unknown band. The difference was that My Morning Jacket were actually pretty great, and like the best-kept secrets it wasn't long before more people discovered the group. Fast forward a decade and My Morning Jacket draw spillover crowds at Bonnaroo, celebrate themselves with live albums and concert films, headline a New Year's Eve show at Madison Square Garden, and enjoy life at the top supported by one of rock's most dedicated fan bases. It's all left the group with little to prove beyond its own further longevity.
Yet if their iffy 2008 album Evil Urges demonstrated anything, it's that, successful or not, Jim James and crew remain as restless as ever, and would rather do the wrong thing once in a while than do the right thing all the time-- especially if the right (read: predictable) thing threatens to turn to tedium. One result is that lame funk detours and other stylistic no-nos are now part of the band's permanent record, but hey, you win some and you lose some. Regardless, My Morning Jacket's live reputation remains undiminished.
But Live From Las Vegas at the Palms isn't another stage-bound victory lap in the mold of the epic Okonokos. Instead, it's an iTunes-exclusive stopgap (or, more generously, a gift to fans) by way of the state of the art studio housed in the Palms casino in Vegas. That means there's a) No distracting crowd noise, and b) Pristine sound, two things one rarely (if ever) expects from a live release. Whether those niggling details nullify the EP's "live" status is another matter; it's also largely irrelevant since what is here is a pleasant if decidedly low-key and minor session of mostly old material capturing the quieter-- and quiet storm-- side of the band.
The set leads with an infrequently performed early MMJ rarity, The Tennessee Fire-era "Tonight I Want to Celebrate With You", anchored by a reliably endearing Omnichord and a touch of spooky pedal steel before the rest of the band appears and (softly) fills in the empty spaces. The fine "Dear Wife", the only new song, would probably have fit comfortably on any of the band's last couple of records, but here it suits the almost cocktail lounge vibe of much of this EP. In this vein and in this context, "Knot Comes Loose", now replete with an instrumental outro, bests its not dissimilar counterpart on Z. It's looser and even lovelier.
From there the EP goes further back once again, to two more Tennessee Fire gems, "From Nashville to Kentucky" and "They Ran", each given essentially fresh studio makeovers, a little polish to get the decade-old DIY rust off. The former gains drums and a sax solo (!); the latter 1950s-styled harmonies that recall what Big Star was up to circa its ethereal masterpiece Third/Sister Lovers. By the time "Thank You Too" fades, it's clear James has made good on his promise "to provide the listener with a sensual and deeply personal method for relaxational listening...to be enjoyed on a candle-lit bench, a secluded nook, or a sensuous dinner party."
Well, partly. After the indulgences of Evil Urges, this is just the kind of palette cleanser both fans and fencesitters might appreciate. Yet each of these pretty trips down memory lane make you wish there were more where they came from. At a hair over 20 minutes, Las Vegas at the Palms fulfills the requirements of an EP-- it's short and sweet-- but it's also not entirely filling. If it was a sensuous dinner party James had in mind, then he must be a quick eater.

My week just got a little bit better, with me finally going to buy that stupid itunes gift card, eventually picking up Max Payne 2, running home and enjoying the ride. Love it
"Dear Wife" is very 50's-60's pop rock... it really brings me back to wearing my fake tux at the 40 watt at my second chance at a prom and the only successful one I've been to!
EDIT: Also reminds me also of that song PJ covered around 12 years ago or so about the soldier... Last Kiss maybe... I remember listening to it riding the bus to high school... Fuck i'm getting old!

Saw it on iTunes today only because it was on the homepage smack dab at the top of their new releases. I saw it was #9 on the top albums too. That rawks [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Why can i not find it on(at?) itunes store. Is it only available to US residents? I would just loose my mind should that be the case.

I'm fine with missing out on it. There's always the chance that iTunes will lose its exclusivity after a few years. And if not, the band will have another release eventually that will capture my attention.

I really wish you would buy it. :-/ You're missing out on some fine quality music.
I'm sure it's good. But I'm also sure it's only on iTunes right now. So no thanks. If everybody drops their objection to iTunes whenever they want an exclusive, then that only helps iTunes continue its monopolization of such content.
It's a no go for me. I'll live.

People, don't worry. The band most likely makes a lot more money from touring and merchandising. I spent a lot of money when I saw them last month. I got it covered in that respect.
Oh, and for those of you who do buy it, be careful if you ever decide to share it with anyone:

Although iTunes Plus files feature no copy protection, files downloaded still contain the email address you have registered with iTunes. So although files can physically be shared with, and played by, friends and family, any of your purchases that end up on file-sharing networks, for example, can be traced back to you.
If you're interested in an easy way to check your own files, find an iTunes Plus file on your computer. Then choose to open it with a text editor (Windows Notepad works fine). It'll take a while to open and will appear to be full of nonsense text, but if you choose the 'Find' option and type in the email address you have registered with the iTunes Store, you'll find that your DRM-free music is not personal information-free.

itunes can suck my dick, they don't deserve any of my money in the first place. the fucking middle men in music need to shut the fuck up already. let the bands make music and then distribute it. I bought this but if they sued me because I let my friend listen to it that seems insanely desperate. fuck them. mmj should have gotten the full 6bucks instead of like .75cents divided 5 ways or however the fuck that shit works out.
the new tunes are awesome and worth the purchase. wish/hope the band was or is getting a good percentage of the profits for it.

they started charging tax! just noticed it on my last reciept. i may be a retard but i just noticed it. buying albums digitally is cheaper, but i don't get the disc and the wholesome feeling of owning that hard copy. if i'm gonna pay tax i want something for it. {maybe a little too cynical...}
Quotebuying albums digitally is cheaper, but i don't get the disc and the wholesome feeling of owning that hard copy.
And you don't get a lossless copy of the file, as you would with a CD. That's why for bands I really care about, I'll buy the CDs along with a digital download.
When you get the CD, you are free from DRM and file-tracking, which iTunes uses. It's not that I share my files with anyone, because I don't. It's just the principle. If I can buy an album on a CD and it's free of the DRM and file-tracking, then it should be the same with digital downloads. So the only digital stores I will purchase from are stores that offer files free of any DRM or file-tracking -- and those files must be in a high-quality MP3 format. There are plenty of options outside of iTunes, and those are what I use.

iTunes is the best and I love it. I have not purchased a CD in 10 years. I still don't know why people don't like iTunes, and as far as the middle man...isn't the record store a middle man...even if you by it from MMJ website...that's a middle man too. If this is your attitude than you should stope shopping all together...every store you go to is the middle man.

iTunes is about 80% DRM free now and only has DRM on the rest because of retarded loser record labels. Most folks can't notice a 256kbps encoded mp3 vs CD audio unless your listening on a Mcintosh receiver anyway.
Just taking a little fuel from your fire, I prefer holding something when I buy it too. That's going to go away sooner or later though... CDs are dead.

I already outlined some of my reasoning in a post above.
I have a masters degree in social work and have been a counselor for the past 8 years, let me give this a whirl (ie, stand back, I'm a professional!):
So, what you're saying ultravisitor, is that you don't use I-Tunes?

Only someone who has been around for 44 years could be so wise! ;)
Sheesh, at first I thought to myself, "Wow, one of the best things about this ep, is that it shouldn't cause so much controversy like Evil Urges did." I guess I was wrong. I like lossless hard copies with artwork as much as the next guy, but let's not get out of hand here. It's a six song live studio thing that was done quick and easy six months after the last album came out. Can't we just be happy about it?

In that case, since it seems that some people are still confused, please allow me to clarify:
I am not against digital downloads. I do not only buy CDs. Indeed, nearly all of the music I acquire is in digital format. It is done legally. The files are MP3s without DRM or other file-tracking measures attached to them. And I download a lot of music at a cost far below what the music would cost me through iTunes. To me, this is what music in the digital era should be.
Until Apple is prepared to offer what I can already get through other vendors (like Amazon, emusic, Zune Marketplace, etc.), I will simply refuse to contribute to their monopolization of content.
Candles and Panties is without DRM so your all good right? Problem solved. Everyone is happy. I can sleep tonight.
No, as I've already said, there is file tracking attached to it, and it's not in mp3 format.

QuoteNo, as I've already said, there is file tracking attached to it, and it's not in mp3 format.
The file tracking is only intended to keep you from uploading it for mass distribution which I think we can all agree is probably not a good idea.
And in about three clicks you can change the files to mp3.
So, again, all good?
Why not?
I'm only speaking for myself.
QuoteQuoteNo, as I've already said, there is file tracking attached to it, and it's not in mp3 format.

Well, I'm enjoying it right now. Very much.
This is the thing: I don't give a shit if there are or aren't file sharing restrictions...My Morning Jacket is one of my favorite bands, and this new EP is EXCELLENT. I love listening to it.
Good luck with that holdout though! My unprincipled ears will be enjoying another play of Candles & Panties! ::) ;D

No. Converting a lossy file to another lossy file will result in a downgrade in quality. However minor that downgrade may be, I'm not willing to make that compromise. That's why I want files already in mp3 format or in a lossless format that I can rip to whatever quality I would like it to be.
And, even though I never upload files to a filesharing service, I do not want file trackers on the music I purchase. They're not in place if I choose to buy a CD, so they shouldn't be in place if I choose to buy a digital format.

;D We haven't put the headphones on there yet, but we've definitely been playing music for him. He actually responds really well when I strum out chords right next to my wife's belly. Candles & Panties is in our hospital bag though...my wife deemed it mellow enough for the labor room! ;D Other than that, we have some classical stuff, low key dub, and some good ambient stuff. We'll see how far into labor the music will be playing, and I'm sure there'll be a point when I get the order to "turn that shit off!" ;D

OK, just so I'm clear I would like to summarize.
You won't get to hear a great ep by one of your favorite bands because
a) There may or may not be a minor downgrade in sound and
b) It comes with a "tracker" on it that doesn't affect you in any way.
OK, now I'm starting to understand. Fight the good fight!
Well, you're cherry picking reasons, and yes, those are some of them.

QuoteWell, you're cherry picking reasons, and yes, those are some of them.
Cherry picking? I am pretty sure those were the reasons you stated. While lossless files from iTunes would be nice. They surely would cost more than 99 cents. Its not perfect, but the iTMS is very necessary and useful at this current time in music/technological history.
I respect your decision to fight for what you believe in by speaking with your wallet. However, in this situation I think that you are being a little too stubborn. You are making yourself suffer over only slightly meaningful details.

I dont think CD's are dying out as quickly as some might think. Ive heard people who work at best buy, etc. say their CD sales are surprisingly strong. Almost everytime I go to a local new & used CD and DVD shop, theres 15+ people in there.
Also, contrary to popular belief, 10's of millions of people jst in the USA dont have computers and therefor cant download music.
As some here have already said with even more feeling the same way, it just feels better driving to wherever, getting that CD/vinyl/album whatever in your hand, and putting it on in your car or when you get home.

I'm not suffering at all, really. This is not the first time iTunes has had an exclusive in which I have been interested, and I daresay it will not be the last. This might be painful if a longer album, like Okonokos, were exclusive. But an EP comprised almost entirely of songs that I've already heard? No biggie to me.
I do think that iTunes is useful; however, I don't believe that the way they do business is at all necessary. As I've said previously, I've downloaded (legally) literally hundreds of albums at a fraction of what it would cost me to do via iTunes. All the songs I purchase are high-quality mp3s with no DRM or filetracking measures attached to them.
Look at it this way: if emusic.com offers me 50 downloads a month at $11.99, then why can't iTunes? (Partly, I would suggest, because people enable their business model without thinking twice about it). emusic has MMJ's (almost) entire catalog, as well as the catalogs of numerous other artists I like. I've been tempted to leave more recently, but they continue to have a lot of albums that I can't get anywhere else. So they get a lot of my money.
Amazon offers DRM-free MP3s, too, and they've got a good selection.
Anyway, I know I've gone on at length about this, and it may have been annoying. I feel strongly about this, so it's important to me that I not contribute to Apple. I've felt this way for years and have managed to never buy anything from them. I'm not going to crack over one more EP, even if it is MMJ.
Tracy, I'll send you a PM.
